Travel MIAMI tips - questions - advice!

hey.. it depends what you are looking for & how much you want to spend. i'm a hotel snob, and i stayed at the Fontainebleau this past May. it was beyond fabulous, but yet didn't completely break the bank. if you are looking for hot nightlife, LIV & Mokai are the top spots. go to Prime 112 and STK if you want to rub elbows with celebrities & enjoy a great filet.

I would also add one more. Go To Bay Side and take a little cruise to see houses of rich and famous. Tour is a lot of fun + you can see beauty of these houses from a very short distance.
Also, if you did not make a reservation in hotel I would recommend use vacation rentals site. You can find lots of upscale hotel/condos on the beach for half price. I just rented an apartment for my GB with her husband in ***** for 60% less than hotel price. All my friends and family do this when they come to Miami.
If you have any questions about some hotels, you are more than welcome to PM me. I live in Miami Beach for a long time.

Marina, Is there a website you recommend to go to, for the vacation rentals

Well, if you're coming here as a tourist, it's likely you won't ever venture into those areas (I've lived here for over a year and haven't been into them).

But generally:

Avoid Little Haiti at night and be cautious during the day
Avoid Opa Locka
Avoid LIberty City

Anywhere else is just common sense. Be careful of surroundings. In general (despite all the news stories) it's a pretty safe city. Most crimes the victim knew the attacker.

Anyhow, as to what to do:

South Beach: Do the touristy Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, LIncoln Drive stuff. Don't eat on Ocean Drive...the food is really bad, but the people watching is great. We'll usually grab a drink at Mangos and hang out for a bit and then head over to Washington/Lincoln Rd. for better food.

If you want more beaches, drive up to Hollywood or Ft. Lauderdale.

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood has a pretty good nightlife scene and good Vegas style gambling.

THe fun part of Miami is visiting the different neighborhoods. Great food in Coconut Drive or Miracle Mile in the Gables. Go visit Little Havana...have dinner at Versailles (good Cuban food).

There is also the Seaquarium (you can swim with dolphins),VIzcaya Museum, Key Biscayne (if you like outdoorsy stuff).

Feel free to ask....

Oh, good shopping at Aventura Mall (lots of high end stores) and great outlet shopping at Sawgrass Mills.

my friend told me most taxi drivers are Hiatian but... that's ok, right?

Can I borrow this thread a bit. I was wondering if anyone knows any good and big outdoor stores in Miami or FL. I need to buy hiking shoes and gears, so I'm looking for something similar to REI's. Thanks.

Bornpretty: No not all cab drivers are Haitian and even if they were, yes it is safe. My last set of cab drivers were from: Brazil, Argentina, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, and Haiti.

Mediana: Miami is really big. Driving 10 miles can take an hour. What area are you going to be staying? We have REIs as well as Sports Authority, etc. If you let me know the area I can point you in the right direction.

What kind of food? Obviously, the big thing down here is Cuban food and that's kind of what they do well.

I'm not a fan of it though (it's a little too bland for me, I prefer spicy Mexican)....and the rest of the food scene kind of sucks down here.

There are a bunch of high end celebrity restaurants in South Beach though.

my boyfriend and i are goin down there durin May and we both enjoy good food
THANKS!!!

We went to Red Fish Grill for our Christmas dinner last year, and it was beautiful (Sit outside) and the food was great! We also really like Sushi Samba right on Lincoln. My Mom isn't a huge sushi eater, yet she tried a bunch of sushi there and loved it.
