LV and the quality

the quality definetely has changed. My mom's bags from 20-30 years ago, are much different (better quality) than the ones today. You can tell the quality and time put into each stitch and materials, nowadays, when there is a misaligned stitch, the SA just say, "oh cuz its made by hand its gonna be like that"
well it wasn't like that before!

It makes me really sad to hear that this may actually be happening.
I have been an LV addict for 3 years now, and I first started to buy from them because I was impressed by 1) the in-store treatment 2)The quality of the products and 3)How historical and symbolical each bag is.

I still buy from them because of the same reasons, however I do take hours to finally walk out of the store satisfied. This happens because I inspect every inch of the bag, and I make sure that what I am buying is worth the money I'm spending. Of course I've had some problems with my bags (creases, pulls on scarves etc...) But I do think that this is beyond control. This WILL happen, there is nothing we can do about it. In my honest opinion, I do not think LV has gone down in quality, I refuse to believe that because I care for it too much and it is too special for me. However means of communication, and masses have changed quite a lot in today's world, and therefore they need to adapt. Maybe, just maybe, they are still having trouble in this big change, and perhaps in one or two years the quality will be just as good, if not better than before.

I did realize that some bags have lighter canvas or hardware, but people weigh or thickness do not imply one's quality! The lighter canvas is used to make the bags more "fluffy" like the neverfull, and I love it! And the lighter hardware may just be used to make the bag more convenient to be carried.

In the end of the day LV is LV, and a bag is a bag, we can buy them, wear them, and satisfy ourselves with them, or at least die trying.:smile1:

This is a very interesting and educational thread! I'm still a "newbie" when it comes to LV, as I bought my first in 2006. I originially purchased LV because of the claims of "luxury" and "high quality." (And, I admit, because of status symbol.) So, I cannot compare the quality of the older LV's, but I will say of the 9 bags I've had the privilege of owning (if even for a short time), I've been pleased. I hope I remain being one of the lucky ones.:shrugs:

this book should really not be posted on this forum as facts.. so much behind this book that people don't know

well, to be entirely honest, the Harper's Bazaar article about the child labor and terrorism connection to fake bags is being used as a "fact" here too, so why not "Deluxe"? i'm not saying fakes are good, but i'd say, keep the discussion fair.

now, about the declining quality of Vuitton goods...

if you ever get a chance to hold a vintage piece you'll immediately recognize a difference in material quality and craftsmanship. Vuitton even reported that they were proud that they could create bags now in "workshops" of groups of workers instead of having specialized people creating bags.

it's sad, yes, but this is the truth we have to live with. Vuitton ain't what it used to be.

@FashionMike: keep dreaming.

Hello all. I know LV is a great brand and supposedly has great quality, but have you ever experienced anything different? Please share.

Recently I bought a Keepall, and the lock that came with it didn't look 100% pristine/shiny/perfect. It looked like someone either didn't coat the entire thing correctly or something, but the gold in the "LV" and "Louis Vuitton made in Paris" engraved areas looked partially chipped. I'm normally pretty anal about that stuff, but I figured it'll get that way after a few years of use anyway, so I just kept it.

And speaking of that, is the brass just covered with a gold coat, so after time it eventually starts chipping? I always thought you can tell an authentic from fake by looking at the hardware to see if it chips... :confused1:

I never had any serious problems with my LV bags but my latest buy, a Deauville bag which I use going to work, are the gold color on the metal parts starting to 'rub of'. This is one of my latest LV bags and I have never experienced it with the older ones. I've had the bag about one year now and it has started to get a nice patina on the calfleather and I am not so crazy about the idea of starting over with a new bag.
I also had a friend some years ago that had the similar problem with a dog collar she bought were the golden color on the hardware came of and she returned it, but the new collar had the same problem.
Has anyone out the experienced the same problem with the hardware?

Since the takeover, they are using different hardware than they used to. It is definitely not the quality of the older bags. There is a HUGE difference. The zippers tarnish, brass chips much more easily. The zipper on my zippy wallet actually turned silver in less than 6 months. I gave it to my daughter because she didn't care, but wow. The zipper on my Tulum PM also turned (I just had the zipper replaced) and it's not a bag that I use that often. My SA told me that they have noticed a change. It's sad. With what we pay, the quality should still be as good. I have noticed a difference with the leather and brass even on the speedies comparing a new speedy to some of mine which are much older and there is no comparison. I've actually cut back on buying LV because of the problems with some of the newer bags. The quality is actually not the same as it used to be. I have an older Babylone with the calf lining. It is much nicer than the newer ones from a few years ago, both in the vachetta, lining, and hardware where the handles are attached. If LV keeps going in this direction, it's going to be a real shame. I won't buy anything with the new hardware because I know it's going to turn and fast. So - no more LV bags with zippers for me. Even the key cles is not made the same as the older ones in terms of the zipper pulls and chain. They are using cheaper materials for everything. Only the canvas remains the same.

I have not had any issues with my bags, however I just this week returned a wallet because the credit card slots were not sized correctly (design flaw?) and returned a shawl in June because it was sent to me with a run/huge snag on it.
