LV and the quality

yup, i also found that the quality isnt that good anymore esp on the canvas. there're some scratches if you see clearly. i'm quite disappointed sometimes for the price we pay for the brand.

unfortunately, i agree there seems to be a decline in quality. i wanted to get the damier graphite messenger but the hardware seems doubtful. i was thinking that it could be hard plastic too. now i am thinking to just get taiga viktor or another french brand. i cheated on LV yesterday and sneaked into H****s to ask about their range of bags. The H****s SA said definitely LV is losing its 'luxury' status because they are mass-producing and that many people 'upgrade' to H*****s because the quality is not compromised and even though you pay alot more for an H****s bag you get more WOW!
p/s don't get me wrong, still love LV, bought Graphite Porte Documents only recently.
I own H bags too, but I don't like the most styles of H (I only like the Kelly and the Evelyne!). :nogood:Hermes isn't really an alternative to LV for me! I will have a look at Bottega Veneta - I love the soft and wonderful leather and the style of it and the processing is grat!!

I think that it's also because they're trying to do so many new things with the bags. They're putting out items in way more materials than before and It's not possible that they have been through the testing of wear and tear of time that the older bags and materials have.

ITA with everything you said. As much as I love LV, the more I get to know about the product, the less interested I am with the latest IT bags the brand produces. If you compare the "classics" (ie., the speedy, alma, noe, etc) with the newer designs, there's a HUGE difference between the two. I don't really know anything wrong with the classic bags, other than vachetta...and that was what added "character" to LV. People used to love patina on their bags, but now more people want their vachetta to stay white. The newer bag designs are clearly appealing to a different audience.

I'm not sure how durable or attractive these newer bags will be once they start aging. A lot of them are too big and don't have reinforced straps. We'll just wait and see. I'm not trying to bag on LV as I still LVoe the brand, but for now I'm going to stick with classic bags (unless it's an accessory piece like a wallet or the Sophie).

if you read Dana Thomas's book, Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster , you'd know why quality from Louis Vuitton has gone down.

OMG!! I was just about to post this book! Great minds think alike, lol! Yes, this book goes in depth about luxury brands, and concludes that the only two brands that have managed to remain true to the original quality are Hermes and Chanel.

I spoke with a consignment shop owner recently, who told me that the newer mono pieces are being massed produced, which is why the quality and sometimes, the color, is not quite it used to be.

That is untrue. Chanel quality has gone down and so h as Hermes. They all have. First of all I just bought Mom a new CHanel Jumbo Caviar Flap in Black. ANyone can see that the caviar is dull, the leather is different and they bags do not have the same structure. The salesgirl at Chanel at 57th in NYC said I had some eye for it. She said most people don't know, but I was 100% correct. Then I became friendly with a sales man and I told him the quality of Chanel now was awful. I told him the quality changed and the caviar about 3 or 4 years ago. They looked different. He informed me that in 2004 Chanel got a new President and he lowered the quality on all Chanels. As far as Hermes, you are wrong there. My girlfriends have Hermes. And one of them who also sells vintage goods, said they changed their leather. They had some Italian name leather, I don't recall, and they stopped using it for something cheaper. HERMES fans are furious.

We have to buy something. But since they all raised the price double, and these bags are thousands of dollars, it's inexcusable to go down on quality.

You mentioned people wanting their vachetta to stay white & how used to the patina was what added the character-I totally agree!!! I see all these posts about people not buying or freaking b/c the vachetta was starting to patina & I'm like, 'what?'-its supposed to be that way!!! So I completely agree that LVs are starting to appeal to a wider & YOUNGER audience. I'm thinking that a lot of LV customers now can't remember the dark patinaed handles on the classics b/c they weren't BORN YET! That just makes me feel old! BUT as a business standpoint, these people are becoming more of the target audience for LV & larger bags are whats popular now. I can't imagine a Neverfull or a Galliera being around in 20 years b/c they are enormous & the canvas is so much thinner than in years past.

Thanks for letting me ramble!:p

I know the HI company uses skins from within their own sources, and do this still. (soficuir) It depends on the type of good your are thinking of as some companies outsources some of their stock while others outsources other things.

As for Chanel, I think Dana Tomas mentioned only Chanel for the perfumes. I think people are putting WAY too much emphasize on this book. It is not really going in depht at all the way it claims to.
Chanels president, was that the one who used to work for GAP?

I don't think it's entirely LV's fault, really it's because times are changing. People are less or no longer buying these brands for the quality, they buy it because it's a status symbol. In modern days, many are more affluent than before so as a generation, we are spending more due to credit being widely available. Thus people are buying these goods as status symbols, you only have to look at socialites who are seen with the latest limited edition and how many people waitlist or queue for the given item.

To conclude, yes people have changed and brands are now catering for a younger, trendier and more affluent market who can afford to buy more than one bag a year. So yes quality has declined, but LV are trying to cater to a new market.

this is scary! but i think it's true though... the kinds of problems i'm seeing being reported here in tpf...

on the other hand, maybe it seems that there are more problems now than before is due to 1) more people buying it now? 2) we are more aware of such problems bec of internet.. and tpf?? :sneaky::smile1:

That's what i'm thinking too... I'm finding it really hard to believe that they are actually getting cheaper materials for their items... Or at least i'm hoping.

at the Hermes subforum, we have a number of members whose Birkins became defective after a few months of use. the metal plates on the fastening belt separated from the leather part.

I just watched Dana Thomas video on youtube--recommend to everybody!!!! Guys, think yourself---LV has profit more then 2 billion dollars a year ---dont you think its just simply not possible to handmade all the items cause there will be simply not enough craftsmen !!!!!!!!!!! Thats why LV had to go mass production, but has to keep quiet about it!! I love LV ,but after watching the video i am dissapointed, but i beleive everything that was said and i am planning to read the book also.
