I was not there so I can only speculate. During the France visit we were able to see so many things on live television. The visits, some of the State Dinner, the awful media crowds, and the unforgivable lack of French police protection.
One can only imagine what was going on behind the scenes that we could not see! Discussions ... tiredness ... meetings ... planning ... conversations with the Palace ... security briefings ... hurried meals ... checking and updating schedules ... getting ready for the next day ... trying to get some bit of sleep. As the King's Equerry, Jonny would be in the midst of all of these things. All the while, at the same time, watching over the King and Queen during each day's public events. Every duty carried out by him in a most impressive manner.
It appeared that our Lieutenant Colonel was forced to push through crowds. Keep his eagle eyes on everything. Move quickly while working with the Royal security team to keep the King and Queen safe in the uncontrolled crowds. Tolerate being hit by cameras. Manage being jostled by the media pack. While in the midst of crowds, physically keeping people away from the King and Queen. There was one live TV scene where he was seen, using his strength, to hold back media from the King.
Considering the conditions under which they were forced to work, the entire Royal party must have been stressed beyond words! I suspect that boarding the plane home may have been one of the most pleasant parts of the entire affair.
Edit: A few words changed.
