Admission to Sandhurst is competitive and it appears that Jonny was ready for Sandhurst's Army Officers Selection Board. I believe he had been involved with an organized student military program during his time at university and he had already earned his university degree. Both of these accomplishments would be noted and help to advance him in the rankings during the selection week.
After a bit of digging, I learned that so much of the Sandhurst entrance Selection Board is performance-based testing, taking turns leading, applying critical thinking skills, treating people with respect, and learning how to "listen". While the Selection Board classroom work sounds totally exhausting, the physical fitness testing sounds brutal! To test Jonny's aerobic capacity, he was required to run between lines with his steps keeping time to a beeping signal that steadily beeped faster and faster. Next was the "upper body explosive strength" test. Jonny, from a seated position, had to throw a 4K medicine ball a minimum distance. In the next test, Jonny had to pull up and hold in place a 50K bar from the standing position. I hope I am getting all of this right!
I read that, of the 100's of applicants that qualify for the Selection Board, only the top 10-15% actually pass! So, not only did Jonny have to be highly qualified just to earn admission to the Selection Board process, he had to be even "better than the best" to succeed and earn his admission to Sandhurst. Exhausted just thinking about everything he had to accomplish
