Officially not recommended by, but I have done it. (for travel, or when I unexpectedly end up having to carry stuff.) It's not "tragic". That's silly. By the way, it hangs differently when you have a coat on. You won't tear up the bag, either. They are very strong. I can remember when the Speedys were the big trend in the 80s and early 90s. Yes, women wore the straps with the bags. So if you need to, on occasion then do it. There are other bags with straps that are the same way and now are in fashion and not all have rings. You could try it. I see women with them. Believe me, sometimes you have to have your hands free and you can't always plan out your bag. Do what you need to do.
