Actually, I heard that the actual story was something like, the family that runs the tannery that produces the barenia for Hermes slowed production right down due to the fact that only the older family members knew how to produce the leather, and none of the new, younger members or employees had gained the skill. When the "old guy" passed away, there was virtually no-one there to make the Barenia....recently the same family (and factory, of course) have begun producing Barenia again, and therefore Hermes is putting more out again.
They would have had some stock in reserve, which is why it didn't disappear off the radar entirely, but weren't making entire bags from this stock.
This is why there are rumours (I have heard, at least) that the 'new' Barenia won't be up to par to the old Barenia. Of course, Hermes would never admit that! LOL!
