Ladies...Any RUDE/CATTY/SNIDE/NASTY Remarks about your Birkins or ANY Hermès Purchase

Well, you're a very forgiving person, Sambina, and I guess this one time we'll let your friend get away with it and blame it on those deadly, mind-altering wine spritzers!

However, if he dares comment again, I'm coming after him, and Bagged will hold him down while I administer the fatal blow . . . with an old Birkin.

I live in NYC and carry my Birkins everywhere. It makes me uncomfortable when others assume that my H is fake just because I'm Asian. Not sure if I'm paranoid but my husband thinks that there is a stigma since many of the fakes are sold in Chinatown on Canal Street. The funny thing is that my DH often jokes about the costs of my H bags but he gets super sensitive when I comment on his watches. He has a vast collection and most of the pieces are over $25k each. Our family and friends often inquire about the cost of our bags / watches but most of the time we just smile politely and change topics. One of the parents at DS's schoolasked me to donate a bag for a charity auction. I was in shock and almost threw up. The mother made a rude remark about us not caring about the school and said loudly that we had "too much money". Surprisingly, I kept my calm and later found out that she was asked to leave the fundraising committee and later gently nudged out of our private school.

OMG, that is so rude! Nobody has the right to tell you how to spend your money or what to buy. And it's also such a pointless remark on top of it.

I don't have any Hermès bags, but have already had those remarks too, but luckely not in a really rude way (from friends at least). I just say that that's what I like and they shouldn't try to understand (and then switch the topic).

I agree with some other tpfers here that I'd rather 1 quality item that will last a lifetime than a bunch of "it" bags that don't stand the test of time. I do have some family members that I wouldn't tell how much my bags cost because I'm sure they would snicker amongst themselves.

OMG SIMONE....I threw up in my mouth...the nerve of that woman...I'm glad she was removed.

I'm about quality versus quantity...that's how I was raised. In 2007 I spent $$$$ on a LV Speedy 30 White Multicolore..it broke the next year. And ladies to me thats having a disposable pocketbook...especially that bag I only carry in the summer...I wanted a pocketbook that was going to last a long time, I also got tired of buying differnt types of bags because it doesn't go with what I'm wearing.
A BIRKIN GOES WITH EVERYTHING!!!!!
I wish I came to TPF before purchasing the 40cm...I do have buyers remorse, only because I have fibromyalgia and the 40cm is very heavy and it triggers my spams...I wish I would have did my homework before buying it...but LOVE my JPG!!!!

Sambina,

I'm sorry this happened to you. It's especially hurtful when it comes from a friend. (albeit, from one who has runs of the mouth!)

Envy and beauty really are in the eyes of the beholder.

If you value this friendship, choose not to respond unkindly to this person's thoughtless remarks (but don't be shy about stating how his words/attitude are hurtful, when the right moment presents itself).

In the meantime, enjoy your Birky in the best of health and happiness. Life's too short to be concerned about what others think about your purchase and/or to watch others watching you.

yeah i have gotten sooo much crap from the FW over some freaking H towels.... really, really? i have gotten crap over my LV purse and accessories... i honesty think people are just full of it.

my DW was giving me crap yesternday about my new Ulysse journal, and this is a woman who for years flew to london JUST to see Wimbledon and never actually saw much of the city... so i just scoff when people make such commentary., because they all spend a lot on the things that matter to them they just want to be hypocritical about the things that matter to you...

ok you really should have taken the speedy back to LV for repair... they would have done it for free as it was still under warranty.

I have both H and LV items, and i agree completely i am all about one or two well made pieces that will last forever. the wife gets annoyed with me because i really wont buy something unless i have researched it and know a lot about its quality and warranty, heck i even spent weeks researching umbrellas to get a well made one with a good warranty and got two instead! and neither has failed me in the rain.

to me quality and workmanship is paramount (as well as a good warranty).

buy doing things in this old fashioned way; quality over quantity, i actually find that i save a lot of money (than i can then spend on H or LV :graucho: )

It makes me think...hasn't anyone ever heard the expression "IF YOU DON'T HAVE SOMETHING NICE TO SAY...THEN DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL?...I just read in the LOUBOUTIN Forum that women make Rude/Snide/Catty/Nasty remarks about the BELOVED RED SOLE...I mean what gives?...just because there are women & men out there thinking that spending over $100 on shoe is INSANE & RIDICULOUS...I think its VERY IMMATURE ON THEIR BEHALF for them to go out of their way to try and make people feel bad about what they choose to spend their hard earned money on...and even if its not hard earned money.....its still none of their damn business..lol

simone, I'm glad you kept your cooool .. situations like this really would really irk me to no end and mortified ..

.. kudos for you and your husband's level of class^.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'm a newbie here and already I find this forum incredible. Wish I discovered TPF sooner as I probably could have saved myself many headaches. My DH and I try to keep a low profile in social situations. We appreciate beautiful things and always try to bring as little attention to ourselves. I'm so glad to find ladies on this forum with similar interests. Thank you!
