Oh gosh! I am also in California, purchased in Dec 2023 -- hope this doesn't happen to me!

Curious, did you give DHL your social security number as part of the release of your shipment? I did, and was hoping that meant that they were tracking state taxes had been paid prior to releasing the shipment.
Hello! No, my DHL delivery went smoothly. I'm in San Diego, so Long Beach was a port of entry and US custom. For some reason (maybe random, maybe because order was over $5K... or who knows why) custom notified State of CA about this purchase. I placed online order with JD in July 2023. In March 2024, I got a letter from the State of CA stating that I might be responsible for State sales taxes for my international purchase, if i don't believe i'm responsible, i had to fill out State paperwork (online) and provide proof that sales taxes were paid by me. I did do that and provided JD invoice (in paid status) where custom duties and taxes were itemized.
However, State of CA is unable to find JD as a registered agent who should be remitting sales taxes collected from the customers back to the State. Per State, they reached out to JD for more information but no information was provided, therefore state is going after me (the consumer) to receive sales tax. I kept communicating (very transparently) with JD and State (all 3 parties (including myself) via multiple emails since March 24. JD is aware of every letter and email State addressed to me. As of today, there is no resolution.
hope this helps

New to JD. Took me a week to read this entire thread. It’s quite a time capsule. Thank you all for sharing your experiences, opinions, and pics.

Question: For the trunk shows, has there been one in San Francisco or Northern CA? At the trunk shows, do they sell any models to take home that day or is it just an opportunity to see/feel and then order?

Sorry, so you didn't give DHL your social security number when you first received your bag? They were able to deliver the bag without you releasing your social security number?

Because DHL wouldn't release the bag to me without me providing both my social security number and tax documents to prove that my number was accurate.

Correct! I didn’t have to provide my ss # to DHL… they just delivered the package. Who knows if it’s the reason why I’m having all issues with CA state sales tax … yet, no SS # is usually needed to pay sales state tax … seller charges customer and sellers remits taxes to the state… at least this a standard practice.

could it be an import tax? I think every thing over $2,500 pays import taxes… but I’m not 100% sure or how it works. I think it’s random.

I don’t think so … I called the State of CA and they said that there’s no records of JD remitting state sales tax collected from the customers back to the state. State is unable to find JD as a paying agent in their database. So it’s all about CA sales tax which was charged by JD when order was placed (online).

I think someone from DHL dropped the ball and let your package go thru without your SS#. Usually they hold the package til they get all the info.

Possibly… I got 2 packages from JD: 1st in July 2023 and 2nd in March 2024 (which I ended up subsequently returning). Both packages were delivered without me providing SS #.

What happens after you give DHL your SSN? Do you get an invoice to pay a tax fee? Or do they send you a form in the mail?
I’ve received email notifications to go on the site w my shipping tracking and from there there’s a form you fill out asking for your name, address, social security # and I think Drivers license too (don’t remember.) They also ask questions like if you are a business of importing and if not, how often you import from overseas. Then if there’s a customs charge, you pay then too. They will email you a receipt. When you submit, it says if they need more info, they will contact.

Thank you for the info. Have you paid any duties, taxes when you placed your order online? I was charged almost $1k extra for US custom duties and CA sales tax in addition to the price of the bag.

Yes. I bought some fine jewelry £1700 from Xupes and paid $125 in customs thru DHL. I don’t know what the $ threshold is for no customs charge. There has been times when I didn’t pay customs for smaller purchases.

Thank you. I was mainly asking about JD online order. I paid all custom and state sales tax at the I placed my JD order online. Total order already included those charges.

I’m not sure but I think sometimes you have to pay extra charges as an importer (to the US) and it’s random, even when you paid taxes online at the store when you buy it. I have read this has happened to people on sites like Farfetch, VC etc. But… I’m not really sure. It usually happens above $2,500 and it’s not DHL or FedEx but the government that charges that fee. But who knows… it’s very confusing. Maybe someone here knows more about it.
