Joseph Duclos Thread

Thank you.
I read the story. Wow! I’m a little confused. JD didn’t have a pink Diane option last year and I know why Ramesh is no longer with Moynat. The story writer is incorrect.
I haven't seen a pink Diane bag until this year when they released the L15. And it's not even available on the website yet.

Also there is no Diane being sold on VC. I've always looked and the only Duclos bag that was available to be purchased there some time ago was a Fontélie.
Seems very problematic that a link with fabricated information remains an allowed post, while posts questioning why this isn’t cracked down on get removed.

Anyway, I just bought my first Diane after initially being frustrated with the pricing changes (the new colors wooed me) so I look forward to posting a photo!

Not sure what´s the point of denying factual info. Pink Diane was available a year ago and even 2 years ago.

I don't see that the blog comment is necessarily incorrect.

- they don't say the JD is box leather; they just compare it to Hermes box leather.
- "last year" is relative, it can mean anything from 1 month ago to 2 years ago (they posted Feb 1st)
- I see a few pink-ish Diane variants on website, it could be any of those.

I’m not surprised if a design house occasionally gets it wrong. Auto manufacturers get it wrong all the time, Takada airbags anyone?
Some poor aging HW, it can happen, I have a Chanel Boy with GHW that looks dreadful, I’m embaressed to carry it.
I have a Madam Birkin that looks like hell on the handles because I wear a lot of jewrlry.
Bags if used WILL age, each of us has a tolerance for what’s acceptable
Wear and buy accordingly.

I scratched my Diane pretty bad on my H belt, lol, over time the scratch has become less noticeable, the leather is overall developing patina and the HW although scratched has not tarnished!

I’m happy to report I’ve not experienced a defective Diane!

Ohhhhh. The Rose clutch in Lumière. Lumière should’ve never been compared to box. Lumière is not a leather for people who dislike patina. Not only that, this particular leather is light in color. I consider it a don’t-wear-lotion-special-occasion purse.

I thought about buying this clutch, but I didn’t because I knew I’d be afraid to use it. It’s not for me.

I’ve had my Fontélie for over a year and it’s in excellent shape. I could be wrong, but I think ‘Nicolas’ and his wife liked the clutch’s look, but found the hardware awkward and the leather all wrong. I blame ‘Nicolas’ for not reaching out to the brand.

I reread the story. There are some errors … and the writing style/arguments sound familiar.

@FatFIRE mentioned in an earlier post there are reports (with an s) of hardware erosion. May I ask where I can find more reports before I purchase a Diane L bag?

I thought ‘Nicolas’ compared the leather to box when they wrote:

I believe they thought they were getting a box-like leather.

You don´t really think I am the only one who dislikes the brand, do you?
Outside of the fan bubble, JD is quite severely criticized.

Just check the top rated comments under that article (from a year ago), they are all critical.
Also check this reddit post. The comments are hilarious!

I have to admit, the comments are hilarious.
Someone wrote JD, along with Moynat, is a LVMH brand.

Yes, the Diane dagger-like clasp isn’t for everyone. I love it, but I understand others thinking it’s a bit much. The Diane is not a line for the meek and mild. It’s fierce.:coolio:

It´s just a bubble where people have already rationalized that machine stitched bags with gilded hardware from a startup should cost $10k after duties. People from outside the bubble can clearly see the brand for what it is (overwhelmingly negative comments, obvious comparisons to Celine 16 and mockings of JD designs on Reddit prove it). I think it´s even harder to admit the lackings once you bought JD bags, so that´s where the reactions to double down, deny and deflect might come from.

Today someone with the nickname Allan even replied to Nicolas on Purseblog:
"Cap.
Joseph Duclos did not release a pink Diane bag last year, and as of this writing, they haven’t released any pink Dianes so far.
They also are not using box leather. So assuming that the bag in question is crafted from pink box calf leather, Joseph Duclos has not made it."

For anyone who still believes in the non-existance of pink Diane before 2024 below is the proof that it was even available in 2021 (130 weeks ago to be precise).

I disagree with the comment from Nicolas on a couple of points (on Ramesh and on Jimmy Choo comparison), but he hits the nail about the "overall inauthentic structure and story around the brand and their products". That´s the core of all the issues.

Another thing I´ve just realized while checking Rameshes Insta. As a matter of fact, I know this artisan stitching JD bags. He´s the owner of the Atelier Tabary in Paris, still in business (second picture from his atelier).
Does JD even employ staff artisans or are they outsourcing the production to affordable ateliers?

My guess is they use outworkers which is very common for smaller brands (even with bespoke shoes that can cost upwards of 5000 euros from historic brand such as John Lobb St James)

Then where are those young artisans after "Compagnons de Devoir" apprenticeships JD is touting on their webpage? Are they also just stitching bags for their subcontractors? Does JD even have a proper atelier or only that one at the basement to serve as PR gimmick?

LOL, are they outsourcing everything? Even Ramesh Nair himself doesn´t seem to be employed by Joseph Duclos. His LinkedIn says he´s "Artistic Director/ Head Honcho at Milky Black Paris" since Nov 2020. Is JD just one of their customers?

That Diane L isn’t pink. I have a leather sample of brique. It looks like that — basically a muted capucine. An orange-red.

Before I click ignore on all future JD fire hose bitterness, I’ll elaborate on what the lovely @Loganz wrote. All companies have hiccups. All humans are imperfect. I’ve never stated JD, any company, and I are perfect.

Life is too short (and I know this personally) to have toxic interactions with strangers, especially keyboard brand haters who know only a little about me, why I like JD, and who want to believe only the worse in others who are trying to celebrate a brand.

As this world darkens and grows more and more negative, I’ve found light in this forum. The positivity of its members have helped me through my treatments, my mother’s death (2023), what’s happening in the US, and so much more. I awake each morning to interesting comments that start my day in a thoughtful positive way — whatever the JD comments. And now I get frustrated and disheartened. Not good.

I will follow the (respectful) good and bad JD comments. People agree and disagree. Thank you to those members.

May everyone who reads this find handbag nirvana, JD or not.:girlsigh:

I don’t care if the Diane bag is machine stitched like I don’t care that B and K are partly machine stitched too. Some of us buy handbags or perfumes or clothing because we like them and we decide it’s ok to pay X amount of money. Not everyone buys things for investment purposes or to show off. I know people who buy the same pair of jeans or shoes in multiple numbers and colors because that particular model fits them well (eve though they are not made my hand etc). Some of us enjoy JD and I don’t care if they are machine stitched or a new start up. I asked before I bought my Diane, I knew it was machine stitched but I liked the model and the leather. I also love a bag that cost me $80 dollars because I think it’s very pretty and cute! It’s all very personal, it’s probably not even leather but I like it.
