Is this price just offensive?

Stophle - this is what I bought 'instead': http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290464806644&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT (sorry, too dizzy to figure out how to save pics from that page)

As of right now, I don't think I will be purchasing any of the alternatives. When I like a specific thing, I usually like only that specific thing,a nd it looks to me like those rings will be available on SAP's website for awhile. IF I have $1500 kicking around anytime within the next 6 months I might reconsider but for now, due to the above auction, I am pretty much on a BAN.

Yeah, I definitely know what you mean by this. I've long stopped buying cheap alternatives to things, because then I can't stop thinking about the real item, and will often end up buying that one too!
BTW, the Chanel jacket you ended up getting is sooo gorgeous, and hopefully it'll take your mind off this ring. And if it doesn't.. then you know the $1500 will be worth it to you!

I've heard of Solange Agazury-Patridge and looked at her pieces before. I don't think the price is offensive because I see it more like buying art than just a "lips ring". I think for people who have never heard of that artist might find it offensive. It's akin to saying that buying a painting is just canvas and paint, kwim?

I like the ring, and I think because it's Solange Azagury-Partridge, it will hold value and be of continued interest to collectors. A lot of people thought the jewelled lips done by Salvador Dali were vulgar, too.

To each his or her own, I guess. I would always prefer to spend the money on a piece of jewelry rather than an item of clothing, though that Chanel jacket is stunning (as I find basics work with all jewelry). And I'd much prefer something different and unusual than a piece that can be seen on women all over the place. Jewelry is meant to highlight your uniqueness, not make you a clone of everyone else.

Is it expensive? Sure. Worth it? I guess that depends on the buyer. When I'm shopping for jewelry with friends and they ask if they should get something, I always reply, "Do you like it? Can you afford it? Will you wear it?" Those seem pretty valid whether the item is $5 from Claires or $5,000 from Tiffany.

Thanks for the comments Lola and Mistikat. I have tried to keep in mind throughout this thread that "there's no accountin' for taste" and what I see as vulgar and awful isn't what someone else sees as vulgar and awful and vice-versa. But I did have a little difficulty swallowing the idea that a SAP piece is "trendy" etc.

It made me think of the Cartier Love bangles. I don't think they're ugly, but I do find them extremely plain (in a bad way, imo) and really don't understand why people would pay so much for them (I know they're solid gold and that affects the price!). The answer again is, taste.

I still haven't written this ring off for purchase before Xmas. I might buy it as an Xmas prezzie for myself. I'm also starting to consider the blue or purple versions. Sigh.

I am glad for all the responses, tho, even those who scolded me for even considering it. :D I especially loved Sternchen's sternness. Made me smile!

exactly!!

if you love the ring and have no problems with paying for it then buy it and cherish it.

1500 is a small price to pay to put a smile on your face daily while the 5$ spend on a similar thing maybe a waste of money because it is not what has the same affect kwim?

I don't know if a price can be 'offensive' but I personally think that the price is absurd for what you are getting in that case, even if you have the money.
the ring is CUTE but its not something anyone would want to wear forever--or even next year when styles have moved on.

I didn't agree with the post above calling it 'art'. While a painting is more than so much canvas and paper, a painting also would be unique. There is jewelry which I would call art and it usually does cost more than the price of the materials (I think of Georg Jensen silver) but it is NEVER mass-produced and machine made which this ring clearly is.

That's my opinion, but of course you can buy it if you want it and can afford it. I'd really suggest waiting six months or so in this case though.

I don't think it's worth that price, but I actually don't think it's trendy. It's not as if lips are a big trend now the way that say skulls were a couple years ago. If you really love it, you could slip it on now, or 5 years from now, and get the same funky vibe.
