Is the Hermes "Birkin" worth the money and the wait? Is it obtainable?

There are no rules. I got my first B in the US with no purchase history, my first K in Paris after buying an Evelyne and a small wallet. My second K after what I would consider an extremely minimal spend for that particular store, where I routinely see six-figure spends in a day.
(Note this refers to new boutique purchases, there were lots of other bags from resellers at the same time. I've also never paid over retail to a reseller. )
I have only once been told by an SA to buy something in order to get a bag - this was in Vegas and the SA was very clear and specific that if I picked up an approx $8K piece of jewelry, a Birkin would come out from the back.

Too much time is spent on guessing what SAs and SMs want. Just be yourself, buy what you want to buy, show you appreciate the brand, make sure they know what you are looking for - and it goes without saying, be a pleasure to interact with :)

If you are located in Europe, your B/K may be not as difficult to score as it is in the US, Canada, Australia and Asia.
I know that France, Germany and Belgium can put your name on "the waitlist" or "the podium order list", without a shopping record. Then, once your name is on the list, you will have to wait. I know that in Germany you will have to wait for 2.5 years until you receive your bag.
In France, many shops do a podium order only in July, but it depends on the shop. If your shop podium-ordered in July only, means that if you asked for B/K in September, your bag will be podium-ordered in July, and you'd receive it for spring-summer the year after. It would make a total waiting time of 1 year and a half, and definitely less than 2 years. If you are lucky, you might score a B/K at FSH in Paris.
I do not exactly know how Belgium proceeds B/K orders, but I know that they have a few deliveries on a regular basis, and that you can buy B/K as a walk-in. Good luck!

Hi, antschulina, I'm new to Hermes and Birkins. I was wondering if you can help? I went into the Hermes store in the UK and asked about a Birkin. The SA took my details and asked what I was looking for. Do you know if this means I'm on a list? Thank you :)

Hi, did she write your details on a small sheet with the H logo? If she used theH list, then, you probably are on the list. What you can do to verify, is to call the store, and ask whether you specified the hardware or the leather (e.g. 'Did I mention that I wanted shw/ghw'?). If they can retrieve your specs, you definitely will be on the list. The only thing is to wait, wait, wait.... Your waiting period may depend on many factors, which are specific to your store. You may wait about 1 year, or 1 year and a half. Or even less. Or a bit more. Maybe someone from the UK can chime in for the waiting periods for POs?
Good luck and fingers crossed!

Thank you do much for getting back to me :) She wrote it down on a piece of card, I don't think it had the H logo on it. So I did what you suggested and rang them (it was hard work). The lady I spoke to on the phone just said she'd pass on what leathers I wanted to the SA, so I'm still none the wiser whether I'm on the list. Thanks anyway :)

Just ask them politely?

You are probably better off posting questions in the London stores thread so people familiar with the stores and how they work can best assist you.

This may be a really SILLY question but, is there a difference betweeen being on a "waitlist" and sending in your "wishlist"?

I have been lucky with my H journey that started April 2016 but I never felt that I was on a waitlist. I would send my wishlist after one bag is fulfilled and wait for a call.

Am I overthinking this?

Waitlist =waiting for your spending $$$$
Wishlist =the requests speed will definitely depending on how much and how fast you support the store regularly also items purchased
Thats my understanding lol
Glad you're having enjoying a smooth and lucky journey
Btw both lists do not exist
Its individual store games

LOL! At the end of the day, it is in fact an "individual store game" and I willingly played.

This is so true. Neither list exists in reality, it's like "Inception" with expensive bags.
