Is the Hermes "Birkin" worth the money and the wait? Is it obtainable?

You need to go to one SA and build a strong relationship with that SA. Sometimes they may spell your name wrong and so you are listed as different people in the POS with different client number. If you find a good SA, just be upfront and tell him/her you want a B35 and what will it take to buy one. Tell them all the stuff you have bought...would be good for you to have receipts so they can check your client numbers. If you are listed as different numbers, have them consolidate your client numbers. Buy everything from one SA. Good luck!

Absolutely worth it
I would rather carry my Birkins and Kelly bags for the rest of my life than acquire the newest "it" bag each season.
If you truly love the brand and spend time in the boutiques then yes, it's obtainable.

Do you think there is any benefit in calling around to find a B if I am willing to travel in person to the store to pick one up? I am pretty much willing to travel anywhere in the US at this point if there is something in stock that I could definitely purchase. I'd also be willing to go to Paris if I knew it was a sure thing!

No. No store you don't have a history with is going to speak to you about stock of Bs over the phone except to tell you "there are none."

If a Birkin is all you want and you have no desire to purchase anything else from H (which is sad, because it's a great brand with many fantastic items beyond the B and K), your time and money are better spent finding a bag at resale.

I actually have a relationship with an SA at my home store and we are working on getting one. I am just impatient. Been buying things from the store for a long time- watches, scarves, bracelets, shoes.... Just NOW ready for my B. I actually have a new relationship at another store where the SA has been incredibly lovely and helpful. If she is able to get the bag it will be the place I buy everything else from now on!

Does anyone know when buying these "other stuff" to build up your profile, are there anything specifically not included? I'm guessing more popular bags/wallets wouldn't count towards those...how about scarves/bracelets etc?

B, K, C and croc clutches are part of the quota. All others should help build your profile including wallets, scarves, jewelry etc.

Why not skip playing hit the magic limit and hope to get offered a birkin? There are numerous resellers who are reputable. I know there are some people here who only purchase from the boutique but the fastest way and the least expensive is the reseller route or fly to the mothership, stay in Paris for a week and hope you win the lottery there. The only sure route is the reseller one.

I am not a reseller so no skin in the game. The money you spend in the boutique you could have used to buy a birkin.

I thought reseller prices are almost double of that in store...I guess at least if I buy from the boutique, even though I'm spending the extra money I can still hopefully end up with some items that I actually like? Not sure if that logic is correct...someone please chime in on how the total prices work out in the end :p

Yes, for the markups that we typically see on Birkins, I would rather get merchandise in exchange for my money, rather than paying a reseller the equivalent of a second H bag for instant gratification. In my experience, loyalty to my SA gets me farther in terms of acquiring bags and getting VIP service, than just randomly spending money to meet a quota. In addition, the whole reason to use a reseller to get a brand new bag is to have a better experience than the H store...avoid the games and long wait. Frankly, I've had a reseller basically tell me that she gives preferential treatment (better price, first dibs on coveted bags) to regular customers over new customers (me). Nothing wrong with that, but if I'm going to go through that treatment, I'd just as soon shop at Hermes. And as far as the long wait, I waited longer to find my desired box Kelly than I ever did for any of my SOs. Don't get me wrong, I've bought my fair share of used bags (vintage, not new), but I wouldn't say that the experience is superior to buying from my SA. I'm sure others have had different experiences with resellers and Hermes stores from mine, so this is purely my opinion.

If you aren't interested in buying "other stuff" to build a profile, I think a reseller is best.

If you are genuinely interested in the brand, want to learn about all the many things they make supremely well then choose a store and an SA that will take time to show you all the many, many beautiful things. Buy what you like and then they will ask for your bag list after getting to know you a bit and make it happen but not likely on command.

This was my experience and several other newer members, not every store is the same and I know that not everyone has had the same experience but that doesn't mean it's impossible.

I know that at my store, they give bag offers to those clients that are truly interested in the brand, are kind and respectful visitors to the store and buy only what they love. They also probably give bags to clients that come in a drop a ton of money on say Homeware, Jewelry or Watches but I haven't had that experience so I can't speak to it.

Thank you both for sharing your experiences! It makes me excited actually thinking about dropping by the boutique this weekend to explore what other things they have to offer. I've been on the purseforum for a while reading everyone's posts and drooling over their purchases :p they are just so pretty...so I think for me the boutique might be the way to go. I just hope that I can find a nice SA that I can connect with, we only have one boutique here where I live :( do I need to constantly go in to the store in the hopes that they remember me or can I pop in once in a while and they can see my purchase history? The boutique is quite a bit of a drive for me that's why.

I also heard stories where if you buy the more popular items that more people want (H bracelets/wallets or silks etc) those won't count unless you buy things that are a lot harder to sell (like clothes/homeware). I guess I'm just afraid in the end after dropping thousands of dollars I still won't get offered a bag  that would be a bummer

Again, I don't know your boutique but I've never bought jewelry, RTW or home stuff and been offered bags, repeatedly. If you like the popular items, buy those! I bought mostly popular items like CDCs and scarves/shawls and one pair of very special boots. My store is interested in turning me into a lifelong customer so try not to stress about it and enjoy it-it's shopping and it's supposed to be fun. I also only go in when something I've been waiting for arrives or in the area to say hello. It's not super close for me so I don't go all the time, it's also dangerous ;)

If you want something very specific, your SA should let you know the chances or ask what else you're open to getting. There are of course no guarantees. You're going to hear/read all kinds of stories on this forum which is why none of can say for sure you'll get what you want. Some people have been strung along or pushed into purchases they didn't want to make to get their bag but hopefully that happens less as people post so publicly about it.
