Is the Hermes "Birkin" worth the money and the wait? Is it obtainable?

I don't know what to think, really. I've only been to FSH once and B was available to look at if I am interested. I wasn't, I wanted a Plume Elan in certain color, which they didn't have. I left and didn't buy anything. I bought a plisse in another store and they had a B there too (a green one, I remember). I guess it depends on SA's mood at that moment and nothing else.

Also, in the U.S. I've only seen a non-exotic Birkin ONCE on display in old KoP store (when they were on the second floor) and it was ...7(I think?) years ago. Never again since then.

My girlfriend was at Hermes Boutique in Vancouver, Canada and the SA told her she has to spend at least $5K on "other stuffs" (shoes, scarfs, watch, jewelry etc) before they would consider placing her name down on the wait list for Birkin. Is this common? Is this happening in other Hermes stores around the world as well?

Although it is remarkably easy to spend 5k in Hermes, I truly have never had this experience with Hermes Vancouver. In 2010 or 2011, I went down to the new Vancouver Hermes location to put my name on the waitlist and develop some form of a relationship with an SA (I didnt know anyone!!).

To my surprise, I got a call from the Manager the next day saying that they had a Birkin available.
At that point, I had only ever bought a belt from Hermes Vancouver. Before that, I kept ALL of my Hermes shopping out of province and anywhere!.
Since then I have been offered several bags (Birkins and Kellys)...bought a few and turned down quite a few.

This was back then, but maybe things have changed drastically since. I think its the luck of the draw and an attitude thing.:D.

I think it would be worth it. Incidentally, I read that the Kelly bag was only nicknamed the Kelly bag because Grace Kelly was photographed holding it (in front of her pregnant stomach) and it became easier/quicker for people to refer to it as that. But it has another name, which I am forgetting at the moment, 'officially.' Nobody uses the real name, though.

Blast from the past!! Here is the future calling!! I was reading on Wiki and the official name of the Kelly, is the Kelly!! But when it was first made back in the '20's - '30's, the Kelly was called 'Le Sac Depeches' Sort of like the briefcases.... Oui, le Sac Depeches, j'adore!

Oh, thanks for digging that up! I love those sorts of details!

You are so lucky! Please tell us what you bought and what you turned down if you're willing to share.

5K must be the standard then, amongst H boutiques in Canada, as I was told that at the Toronto store as well.

Did your SA mention that for that 5K, it must be certain products? is this 5K including bags ?

Hi. She didn't mention that it had to be specific items - I think the 5K applies to any H products. In my case, I have purchased scarves, bracelets and necklaces. I would guess that the 5K includes bags (although I never asked specifically if only certain products apply to the 5K total). For example, if you had bought an Evelyne or Garden Party Tote and they are around 3K - that obviously goes a long way towards your 5K total. She just indicated that you had to have spent 5K total in the store. The only unfortunate part is that if you've spent at other H stores, it doesn't count. They look at the total for that specific store. Hope this helps.

I have never been adventurous when shopping for Hermes products. I simply come to this forum and enjoy all the colorful merchandise. I would much rather collect houses if I were given a choice or the owner of very deep pockets:p

To date, I only have the basic Hermes bags in Black with GHW, Orange, Alezan, a rouge h bolide and a kelly in black PHW. Very boring stuff.:shame:
I have surprisingly recently requested for a bag in a pop color so we'll see but the only reason I turn down any bags is because I have other responsibilities and priorities at the time I am offered otherwise I probably would buy any and every bag in every color.

The former name of the Kelly bag was : Sac a Main de Voyage.

Source: Hermes catalog from 1952.

It was available in Box Calf, Porc, Crocodile.

Your collection sounds wonderful, and my own preference is for a collection of the "basics". I laughed at your comment about collecting houses. If it weren't for all the renovations and decorating I've been doing, I would have a lot more $$$ to devote to building an H collection!
