Is it worth the time to fly all the way to Paris for first Hermes?

if u go to tokyo, u can find lots of birkin either in hermes shop or in reseller shops. the prices are quite steep, particularly taking into consideration of the strong yen. as a tourist, u do get 5% vat refund.

I was in Tokyo this January and last January. But at that point of time, I am not into Hermes yet. The cost of staying and flying to Tokyo and Paris is the same for me, 500EURO.

Thus, instead of confirm of getting a Birkins at a higher price in Tokyo, I would rather exprience the Paris sales season. Getting some of the items that I missed out during last month trip, experience H sales though I dont think I will queue up early at 6a.m - most probably I will only go in the afternoon, and of course see if I can score a Birkins as a bonus if not order for one to be sent back to Singapore. At the same time, I like Paris weather, Singapore is very hot now. Last month was my first trip to Paris, kind of rush too, thus this time, I hope to taste its food and coffee though I am a vegetarian.

Yes, it sounded that I am very much confirmed of going but still subject to the availability of tickets as I am redeeming my miles and my leave approval. The reason of this thread is whether I am doing a crazy act? All my friends and even husband are shocked that I intend to purposely fly all the way over to Paris for shopping mainly for Hermes and shoes purchases (had enough of LV and chanel bags during the last trip), staying for only 2 nights and trying to score for a Birkins when I just came back from Paris last month. The flight to Paris is more than 13hours.

If you place an order in Paris, my understanding is that you'll have to fly to Paris to collect it when it's ready. I don't think they send it directly to you at home (ladies, please correct me if I've misunderstood this point).

They will send the bag home to you IF you've purchased it in the store personally but don't want to carry it home in your suitcase - BUT they will declare the actual value and you will have to pay the 7% GST to customs.

To answer the original question: No.

The dangers are:
- You regret making the trip because you do not get a Birkin.
- You buy a Birkin you later regret buying.

Not crazy. Pretty normal. If you don't do it you probably feel like you are going crazy thinking about it day and night. Just GO DO IT (like Nike says) and then at least you'll be better off from that experience. If you score the items you want, then consider it a bonus. But as Beaumonde mentioned, there are real possibilities of regret. You just need to manage your expectations, and all should be fine. good luck!

They will send it to your home as long as you placed an order there. But it's true they will declare the actual value and you will be charged GST on the bag.

I watched a movie yesterday. There is a line like that

It is preferred to do something and regret it, rather than regret not doing it.

I dont know if I translate it the right way, it was a mandarin show.

From Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem In Memoriam:27, 1850:

I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.

I think if it's on your mind constantly, perhaps you should just fly there, for peace of mind so that you don't end up with personal regrets. However, that said, I do agree on managing expectations if not you might be quite disappointed if you end up empty handed (without a birkin that is). There are really no guarantees depending on the inventory on that day, the SA you meet, the timing etc, too many uncontrollables IMHO.

Best to enjoy the holiday too, it is Paris afterall!!

Since you mention that friends have recommended you their SAs where they had ordered a few birkins from. So you already have that covered, you hope for the best that this SA will serve you equally well since you are 'recommended'.

its definitely a easier step than walking in anonymously, the chances of rejections are waaaay higher. many do not realise that its really a HUGE stroke of good luck when you find THAT SA who is willing to take out birkins from the back, or take your specific orders.

IMHO, dont think further, just GO seek your birkin in paris. I wish you tons of good luck!!!
