Is it worth it to buy chanel and dior lip stick / gloss / makeup?

I find luxury nail polish to be mediocre in performance. The makeup is worth it if you wear it every week. High color payoff and pre-assembled set of coordinated colors in each palette. The eyeshadows are definitely a cut above typical drug store eyeshadows. Lipsticks seem not that different from other Sephora lipstick brands. In the big picture, *skincare* is the most important.

I like following Chanel, Tom Ford, Dior, etc. on instagram to understand the looks of the season. It gives consumers ideas for their own makeup on special events.

For example on 08.19.2021, Chanel posted:

The dior lip oil certainly is not worth it. The only reason why people buy it is because it’s trendy but if you look at the ingredients it’s very common in other lip oils. It’s also not that hydrating. I saw a cosmetic chemist break down the dior lip oil on tik tok, he’s super helpful for finding products that are actually worth your buck. I can give you the @ if you want. :)

I don't like the texture or the color payoff. It's not opaque enough for me.

I have many Chanel products that I use and love. I have only ordered directly from their website because the closest Chanel counter is an hour away. So I'd much rather order online and I get wonderful packaging and free samples to boot! I have used their lipstick, which I'm not that crazy about, but I love their mascara, better than Lancome, imo. And currently use their cake eyeliner which is tdf. I absolutely love it. I recently purchased their eyebrow palette which I also love, and it's lasting a long time, too. I carry my compact so when I need to dab a little over my oily skin, it works wonders. Never used Dior products, so I can't judge. Only have used Chanel and I just love their products.

i struggle with eyeliners (have thrown so many out!) so i'm interested in hearing more abut the cake eyeliner. how long ago did you purchase it? i just looked on their website (US) and only see a cream eyeliner pot. have you tried that one or any of the other liner formats?

I have been using Chanel gel eyeliner for years and years. It is my holy grail! I like it so much better than any of the supposedly “smudge proof” and long wearing eye liners I’ve tried such as Dior, Bobbi Brown, Make up Forever, and Urban Decay 24-7 Glide. Plus, it doesn’t dry out where I have to throw it away. I purchased it initially at Nordstrom but they are always out of stock so I started purchasing on Chanel.com.

You do need a brush to apply. I have several different eyeliner brushes that I use to apply but it actually comes with a tiny Chanel travel brush that works okay. The downside is that you’ll have to spend more time cleaning your brushes.

If there's a certain color you love, why not. I've had a Chanel lipstick and it was lovely. Then again, I once bought a Dior lipstick and it was such a mess - I've never had a lipstick that made an escape from my lips into my fine lines in 15 minutes. Into the trash it went.

It depends from the product and what would you expect from it, some lines are meh, others are fantastic. I suggest to do your own research before buying, as SA can be quite persistant.

I like and purchase Dior lip balms and “plumping” lip gloss. Full disclosure, it doesn’t plump at all but I love the shades. I have a couple of Chanel lipsticks and don’t use it - pigmentation isn’t great for me. I do like the quality of Gucci makeup - best bronzer and blush. Saint Laurent also makes superb lipsticks and foundation.

If you want to splurge, make sure it’s the best and not just the brand..

I used to love the Dior Lipgloss - especially the pink one with shimmer. I have never found another one with the same quality. But they have been discontinued and the new line is not as good as the old one IMO. :frown:

I must admit that I went a bit overboard with buying Chanel cosmetics/skincare this year 🙈. A few years ago, I would never ever spend that much on a lipstick, but this year I bought their 31 Le Rouge (I went for the coffret set). No regrets, I loved the packaging, the crystal case, the leather lipstick holder and the lipsticks themselves. They work well for me, long lasting and they feel very comfortable on my lips. It's the most expensive lipstick I ever bought, but the wooden coffret set and the leather lipstick holder (I picked the silver one) alone is worth it to me (but then again, I love to collect all things Chanel). And for me, so far this lipstick, aside from YSL and Dior lipgloss which I also love, works best for me so far. Chanel's mascara is also nice but I have to admit that I also have a cheaper mascara which looks even better if you want to create extra length and color. Chanel's mascara is more subtle IMO.
One of Chanel's products I also really love is their La Mousse for face cleaning. Love love love this, my skin feels softer after using it.

But to answer the question, is it worth it? For me, it is, but of course it depends on the product and person. What works for me, might does not work for someone else. It's a journey to find out what really works for you/suits you and what not. If you are hesitating, perhaps it's also worth it to visit a beauty corner of one of the brands you are interested in. Maybe a SA can use some of their products on you, so that you can get a feel if you like the products or not.
