You are not completely alone. I did vintage for a bit, and I tried to embrace the suede, but it annoyed me. Mostly because I always wondered if it was clean (even after really cleaning it). I like materials I can wipe out or clean easily. All of my bags were fine but I didn't end up keeping any of them over time. I just got out of my vintage stage I guess. Now I have no interest in it at all, lol!
I don't mind the suede inside of my vintage bags because they've been thoroughly washed and I know I can wash them again if necessary.

That's really interesting. I had what I think is a little bit of burgundy (from my Stewardess) transfer to my white pebbled wallet recently, but no other real sign or indictor of transfer or "suede lining coming off". I had used a light color, mostly off white/linen Optic jacquard wallet for a year before I switched out of it and I would wipe it down occasionally when I saw a little surface dirt, but I never saw any color transfer. I have been carrying vintage Coach for a long time.
But yeah, a suede interior is an acquired taste/not everyone's cup of tea, and yup, you might be in the minority here!!
On a side note, a few years ago in a Coach store, when a young sales associate saw my vintage bag, he was all, ooh, could I see the unlined interior, the Creed, like it was a totally big deal for him ... it was fun!
I've never had the suede come off onto my items. Usually in vintage items, the suede is fairly worn down.

Yes, totally understand, and mine were clean too, but as Iam and I were saying we are the minority about the suede thing, and we acknowledge that :-) I know vintage Coach is awesome, including the suede. It just wasn't for me for the long term.

I think it probably bothered me when I first started using vintage. Now I don't even think about it. What I like best about unlined vintage is that I know they used the entire piece of leather rather than shaving off a super thin layer like they do these days. With lining, you can't see the fillers they use and you have no idea how thin or thick the leather really is. The dyes they used on vintage bags went all the way through the leather so as it gets worn, the color is still there.

My top picks are pony express, safari and ranch bag. They've made newer versions of the pony and safari a few years ago but they were ridiculously small. I want them in a usable size.

If you are looking at vintage, why not consider some of the Ergos?

Be prepared - vintage bags are generally heavier.

The pony express is very special! I remember seeing listings at ridiculous prices. That kind of bag just isn’t made anymore, I see what you mean about reissues not doing it. It’s not just about the design - the beauty is in the craftsmanship, which hasn’t been at that level in a long time.

I did think about the vintage Ergo and realized that if the vintage version isn’t my first choice then I really don’t need the new one (considering I already have one).

A City bag would be perfect, I think. The British tan colour is very tempting. I adore brown leather and for some reason Coach hasn’t been releasing many brown bags lately. Their vintage browns are beautiful and complement casual outfits ve well imho.

To clarify, they did not leave color transfer on my stuff since I am careful with what I put in my bags. My black Stewardess (bought new from the outlet maybe 5-6 years ago) left some light black marks on my hand when I first got it while my hand was deep in my bag looking for stuff — that turned me off. I really didnt like the occasional shedding of the suede lining on my other vintage ones (I was the original owner of most of them. Funny they didn’t bother me at first). Maybe it only happened to the bags I got. I am glad you don’t have these issues and enjoy your vintage bags.

I am wondering if the stewardess you got were the classic ones that were re-issued and were not the vintage ones from the 90s?

Yes, a reissue for sure since it was new from the outlet maybe 6 years ago. I know the vintage classics are supposed to be better but I got turned off completely by this one and also by a preowned red Willis that I got which had a cigarette smell that was not disclosed (I returned it). I bought several reissues new from the outlet (only the black stewardess stained my hand) and I also had a few vintage pieces that I had bought new decades ago (as a child ). Guess I just don’t like the fuzzy natural lining. Sacrilegious to say I guess on the Coach forum

What did you think of the newly released Willis bags that came out and were leather lined?

I remember seeing them and liking them but at the time, I was carrying too much stuff to consider a small bag like that. Back then, I didn’t think the Cassie was big enough either. Can’t remember if they made this large size in that green

Bestie, it’s the first day of 2022 - stahhhp

In all seriousness I really liked the Willis reissue but like @Iamminda even the larger one wouldn’t fit enough for me. I think it came in saddle, too. If I’m not mistaken it didn’t go on sale when the Emery, Rambler etc did - maybe Coach was pushing it as a more exclusive style given the popularity of the vintage version. Anyhow it’s a gorgeous bag:smile:

Mandy Moore’s character on This is Us carries it in the 90s (or 80s?), I always get excited when I see it there.

I love the look of the smaller one. I've never been a big fan of Willis. For the bigger one, I prefer the look of the original version over the remake. I think it is because as an authenticator, it just looks wrong to me to not have the padding above the turnlock.
