What's everyone doing for Thanksgiving? I'm not doing anything special this year and want to live vicariously.:P
I'm cooking a turkey just for us. Our kids don't like turkey. Our son might drop over with something else for me to cook for him.

Years ago, when all my family lived in the same state, we used to alternate Thanksgiving at different houses. One year we were stuck in traffic for hours while heading to my sister's house. It was miserable. We stopped traveling for Thanksgiving, and then shortly after that everyone but us moved away.

When I lived in NYC I was always the one coming home to Michigan for Thanksgiving and dealing with planes and travel, etc. It always felt like a lot of work for little reward. My mother never particularly like hosting the meal, but I was glad to see her over that weekend and our ritual was the Black Friday outlet sales. We would drive two hours to the outlet and enjoy the day. When my mother died, no one took over hosting the dinner and now we all just have dinner with our immediate partners and friends.
I don't miss it really. But I do think the tradition is slowly shrinking in significance to many people, not just me.

The only reason I cook for Thanksgiving is because DH loves it. It is a lot of work. I've reduced the number of things I make to just turkey, dressing, gravy and yams. I can't imagine what we would do if I didn't cook. It would be a nightmare going out to a restaurant and precooked meals make me cringe.

My oldest DD's husband's family is big on getting together for holidays so I guess she'll be part of a big celebration.

I'm sure the tradition is dying. This year we didn't even have to wait in line to pay for our turkey on Monday. I remember Thanksgivings in which I had to wait for hours in the grocery store.

We're having dinner with friends at a hotel spread. I never shop on Black Friday--too crazy. I really don't buy much anymore for the holidays.

A Thanksgiving dinner at a hotel sounds really nice :). Do you have to dress up for it? Have a great time and let us know how it goes. Years ago when we lived in a different part of the state, we had a Thanksgiving dinner buffet at our favorite Hawaiian restaurant. It was so good. They had traditional turkey stuff etc along with Hawaiian favorites and tons of desserts (which they were famous for). I still think about that meal fondly (maybe partly because I miss living there).

This looks just like a pencil case I used to have, only mine was green. I really love the leather lining. Then I got the Peanuts one so the green one went. I use it as a cosmetic case. I want something the same shape but a little shorter so it will fit in smaller bags. There is one a perfect size on Coach.com but it has fabric lining.

You are lucky to have/had 2 of those. I can’t find the one on Coach.com. I searched pen and pencil. I am thinking of buying the one on FOS to try it out. TBH, I kinda want an LV one to match all my SLGs but I am not sure I will like it enough to justify the cost (I don’t mind the price if I love it). Currently, I am using a flat no-brand pouch for my pens.

The one on Coach.com isn't a pencil case, it's a cosmetic bag. It's probably too short for pencils but I want to use it as a cosmetic case anyway.

I can’t imagine cooking an entire Thanksgiving meal (I barely tolerate cooking regular meals, lol). I used to go to my parents, in-laws or my BIL’s for Thanksgiving but no one does it anymore. My BIL can make the best Thanksgiving meal — including fantastic pies. But I think he got tired of doing it because now he is always travelling out of the country during Thanksgiving :(

Is this the one? it’s real cute but it’s too cylindrical to me. I like the shape of the FOS pencil case better even though it is not as pretty

Yeah, that's the one. If I lived near a store where I could try it out, I might have gotten it. I decided it isn't worth ordering for only 30% off because of the hassle of returning.

It's just my mom and me this year, at my place. I don't like turkey, so we'll be having Salmon w/ pineapple salsa. The sides will be: acorn and/or butternut squash (baked ?), roasted rutabagas w/ fresh rosemary, brown & wild rice stuffing, and cranberry sauce. Apple crisp, and banana bread for dessert.

Salmon with pineapple salsa sounds good. I need to find a recipe. Enjoy :)

Ok....I probably know the answer to this but is it weird I'm making my cats, foster cats, and outside ferals Thanksgiving dinner on Friday?

I cook whole chickens for them weekly but my vet will also be dropping off some kitty friendly sides and treats that a vet tech makes. My kids are super excited about it, so I guess that is all that matters lol.

A little bad buying post — I am thinking of getting a leather pencil case from FOS for $22.50. I have always wanted one but it’s never available. Light saddle color — not my first choice of color but a decent neutral.
They had pencil cases? Well, I guess it's a good thing I didn't see them. Those are my weakness.

We typically go to the in laws and I see my family the following week. Well, things hit the fan with DHs parents this week so we are staying home. It's not worth the stress and I refuse to let my kids see them fighting, when they fight it is really bad. I also am so upset with them I don't know how I will even be able to deal with them at Christmas. So I'm rushing around today and tomorrow to make a huge dinner for just DH and our kids. I'm making everyone's favorites including pie and cake. DH is so picky and hates anything store bought. I'm trying to make this dinner as special as possible because the kids are a bit upset they don't get to see everyone this year. They aren't old enough to tell them why we aren't going. They will have fun with cousins next week at my parents house at least.

I never go shopping around black Friday, too crazy and packed. I'm actually kinda pissed I have to suffer through a packed grocery store today and it's nothing compared to the mall:lol:
Sorry to hear you are going through all that. Hopefully your dinner home is so great, your kids ask for the same next year! Relaxing together is the best.

I wish I have some exciting Thanksgiving plans to share (like one year, my sibling was invited to fly on a private plane to the Caribbean for a beach holiday long weekend, why don’t I have friends like that? Lol). Anyways, I am known (notorious) for being an amateur/bad cook (I have never even cooked a whole chicken before!). For the last few years, we have been ordering complete dinners (from Whole Foods, Buca di beppo, etc) We always buy a honeybaked ham regardless. This year, we are getting ham/turkey breast/sides from Honeybaked ham. And just chilling at home the rest of the weekend. I refuse to go to the Mall during Black Friday weekend (not even to Target). Holiday parking gives me a headache and stresses me out. Hopefully I won’t buy too much online with all the tempting sales. Oh, I will be on the road probably for at least 8 hours total this weekend starting this afternoon (picking up and dropping off DD from school).
That drive will be worth it. Iam!
All the things you order sound very yummy.
