Playing a Vampire is a pretty good sign that an actor has a modicum of job security. After all, not only are vampires hot right now, but it's harder to kill off a character who's already dead. Ian Somerhalder is enjoying that security these days. He survived only one full season on Lost (his character died in a fall), but the Louisiana-bred actor is safely into his third season on the popular CW series The Vampire Diaries, playing the cold-hearted bloodsucker Damon Salvatore.

"Damon is the antihero," says the 32-year-old Somerhalder. "At the end of the day, he wants to drink blood and destroy stuff—and he doesn't have a sliver of conscience about it."

Damon's predilection for leather jackets and dark denim is another perk Somerhalder enjoys. The actor's own preferred palette is black with touches of gray or white. He avoids complex patterns or bold colors the way Damon might run from fire. "I keep it as simple as possible," he says of his addiction to jeans, T-shirts, and neutral colors. "That way I don't have to think about it." Another upside: Everything in his closet is interchangeable.
()
Somerhalder is grateful that a similar simplicity reigns in the wardrobe of a modern-day vampire. "At least I don't have to wear a cape or an ascot every day to work," he says, laughing.

In Australia, our morning news program has a "Hollywood correspondent" that talks about all the gossip etc. He was at the Emmy's and declared Ian his best dresssed male actor. The other topic of the day was the John Travolta hair thingy. The correspondent went on to say that he was in discussion with a hair stylist at the Emmy's and they were saying that they can spot every weave, extension, toupe etc, and that Ian's hair was def. not real. That it's a great job whoever has done it, but for sure it's not his natural hair.

i just can't imagine this as it looks so natural and I've never seen anything to even suggest this.

Not that it really matters as he is smokin' regardless...

I call BS on the hair thing. No one with fake hair would have it styled that badly. It's not his natural color, that'll I give, but I can't believe it's toupee or something dramatic. But maybe, although I think it's highly improbable, I've been wrong. It could always be possible. He does wear hats a LOT. But still? Regardless, I saw "Wake.". He doesn't need hair. Ahhhh, Hollywood.

I've noticed his thinning hair for a long time. I attributed it to wearing hats, but I could have been wrong. It could just be hereditary. Either way, he looks great and if he chooses to weave...that's okay too.

wow, thinning hair at 32? hmmm that's either low testosterone or thyroid problems. or bad genes. not that it doesn't happen. (or stress, bad diet, etc) interestingly enough, hair loss in men can be from the maternal side of things, not necessarily from dad, it can be autosomal. Regardless, if he does have a weave, wow. He outa advertise that (altho I would think he doesn't want anyone to know) the people who did it would make millions. And the black dye job does look good, but I liked his brown hair too. He didn't look so pale when he had lighter hair. :p

I have to admit, I'm really liking the Tyler and caroline storyline. I usually can guess what's going to happen, and I didn't see last night's scene with caroline coming at all.

Joseph Morgan is great, and I'm glad they are giving alaric a lot of time. he needs a new girlfriend. Of course, she would probably die quickly, but at least he wouldn't be so morose. :p

Now for a complete tangent. there's a commercial for the movie Pan's Labyrinth on TV right now. If you haven't seen it, rent it. it's several years old, but still better than many movies out now.
