My mother always bought me and my sister handbags. The first designer bag I could remember though was when I was around 12 and we went to Gucci and my mom bought me a shoulder bag with a matching wallet. Since then, I got hooked. I'm 30 now and I never stopped buying designer bags.

^^^LOL It's Alex de Large played by Malcolm McDowell from A Clockwork Orange. He plays a very crazy character and the milk is laced with drugs. ;) I  that movie, though. I'm always afraid my avatar will freak out people.

It's funny that ya mentioned this because I was wondering the same thing! The avatar creeps me out..and I am embarrassed to admit this but at one point I thought maybe it was a boyfriend ..so i wasn't going to say anything! :shame::shame::shame::shame::shame: BUT, NOW THAT WE HAVE THAT CLEARED UP...

As for my story, I remember being a little 5 year old who got purses for her birthday, but during junior highschool I NEVER understood why girls carried purses to school. Howver, about sophmore year in highschool, I met (at the time) my best friend, and she was starting to get into purses..so they started growing on me..until soon enough I was carrying a different (not designer) bag everyday. Well, I ALWAYS wanted a kate spade...I just thought it would be such a huge deal. I went to SF later that year with my parents and went to Saks with my mom. There they were the kate spades! I bought my first one and felt on top of the world..I also bought a longchamp because it was at such a great price..from then I just couldn't buy "regular" bags anymore..no matter how cute...( my best friend, (again, at the time) was so pissed that I bought the kate spade , that she told me I "stole" her style.)

I'm 50, and not addicted to bags, just interested in reading about them and browsing bag sites (started doing this many months ago).
LOL how is de bags, is dey made of de crocodile maybe, in de Nile? ;)

No offence meant, just being gobby! :D

For me, it started way back at fourteen when I was suddenly confronted with a fringed black suede, cross-body number (1985 - okay?! ) and realised it represented my personification of:
A. my own femininity in twirly flirty style and
B. my ability to organise what I'd previously stuck in pockets - kohl pencil, lip balm, stuff - into a neat stylish form.

Put that in one package and my addiction has been nourished through £5/ a go market bags, meandering to/through Liz Claiborne, Fiorelli til it reached its apex in owning a Chanel 2.55. After much heartache about going vegetarian which I won't bore with! :p

Now I'm totally outed with my desires and I'm so much happier!

 You gave me like the biggest laugh today. Which great because I'm feeling all . Malcolm McDowell was rather hot in his day, he's like 70 now!, but I'm glad Alex is not my boyfriend. No ultra violence for me. I'm sorry it's creeping people out. Should I change it? :shame:

Always loved purses, ever since I could remember. I got a white purse with a big rose that I carried around all the time from age 4/5. Then I started buying small evening bags from kids departments and on clearance in department stores. In high school everyone had a Kate Spade or Prada bag. Didn't bother me much that I didn't have one (I liked being "different"). Right before college I got my first designer-designer item (Gucci crushed velvet logo boots with a steel heel) and from that day on, it was designer shoes and handbags. (I don't remember what my first designer purse was!) :amazed:

Addiction to designer bags started with this one kate spade evening bag that I saw in person once but was outrageously priced then remember it still and decided to get it anyway but can't find it in the stores anymore. Found it on Bluefly and the rest is history.

My handbag addiction really started because of a former co-worker and friend of mine. SHE is a HARDCORE handbag fashionista - she even tracks what she paid for the classic bags, how much they appreciate, etc. - she is friends with the sales women in the handbag boutiques at all the high end stores and they know her taste, call her when the best deals are on and make sure she is well-supplied with Friends & Family coupons. So you could say I have a great mentor.

Before meeting her, Liz Claiborne was as good as it got for me. After meeting her nine years ago, I realized my handbags just didn't cut it! So I started buying "better" bags from lines such as Monsac and Cole Haan. My friend always gave me her opinion. Then she talked me into my first Dior bag - a Large Lady bag with brushed Dior gold charms in black deerhide - at one of the numerous private sales that she gets advance notice of. It was half off, but putting that amount of my credit card still took my breath away.

Carrying that first Dior bag made me feel so good and garnered so many compliments! One season later, when my friend called me again, it was a lot easier to pony up for the second bag - a beige/brown Dior Manhattan jacquard/leather bag, again at half price. In fact, I HAD to go back, on my own, for the cell phone case that attaches to the bag. And I think it was the "on my own" step there that was the true beginning of the addiction.

From there, it's been a serious bag every three or four months and, sigh, not always on sale. It's been a pleasurable hobby for me and I'm glad to be into it. My latest addition is a black Prada Tessuto Vit. Diano.

i've always liked reading fashion magazines ever since i was in junior high, but i always only paid attention to the clothes. my attention shifted to bags when i first saw the dior saddle, and i eventually got my first saddle pouch. the true addiction started in 2004 right after i finished college; while in school, i mainly carried everything in my backpack. i love buying purses, but i especially like learning about them, which is what brought me to this forum.

HAHA, HAPPY I COULD MAKE YOUR DAY:laugh: It's your avatar, you don't have to change it for me! Don't worry, i'll still talk to you regardless ;)

In my mid-teens, I saw some women carry around Kate Spade, and so I saved up to get one myself. Then my parents took a trip to Italy and got me a Gucci bag for a souvenir! That and having lived with bag-obsessed roommates for years have done it for me :)
