I agree with and really love this strategy.
Although each purchase is much more of a blow to the wallet/bank account/credit card... they definitely happen less often. I think if i went back to my days when I used to buy total s*&t every weekend to go out, compared to now... annually, I probably spend about the same. Except I get more cost-per-wear value with the stuff I have now.
Plus, because the items are of higher quality, I'm more willing to spend a little to maintain them because I know they'll last a long time. And in doing that, I ensure they fit me perfectly, which makes me feel more confident. So, buying quality is really just better all around (for me).
It was a great revelation to evolve to someone who prefers quality over quantity. I'm proud of myself. And knowing that over all, I'm not really spending more keeps me from feeling embarrassed or ashamed about spending $ on just 1 item.

I remember, reading the dead fleurette's blog post and this one too (about why Parisian woman always look so darn good). Them coupled with a trip to Paris that during and afterwards I felt very frumpy - changed my life.
(not my blog of course)

Thanks so much for sharing that article! Amazing read!

Very good philosophy..

I also have always spent a lot on clothes...and as you get older you make less mistakes and now I mix one season bargains with long term investment buys...

How many pieces do you currently own?

How many pieces do you currently own?

Apparently, around 55 items. For this number, I'm guesstimating, I make a lot of exclusions :graucho: (Suiting I have for work that I don't wear in real life, workout/lounge clothes)...

Most of what I own are staples (15 tanks, 8 Long Sleeve tees, 5 tees, 3 pr jeans) in several variations of the same color: Black & Gray w/a little white & tan thrown in. If I find a classic style I like in a good quality @ a good price, I would buy multiples (but I'm pretty good now).

I also own about 6 blazers or jackets (and 2 'coats'). 2 formal gowns (I have at least 1 annual event to attend, every year), 5 date-night dresses, 4 skirts (pencil), 4 summer sundresses, about 3 sweaters, 4 pairs of not-denim pants.

Then, I have a few scarves, several bags & TONS of shoes. You guessed it, I like monochrome pallets & wild shoes, nice bag. The monochrome makes it SO easy to figure out what to wear.

Yes - all of my clothes are black, white, navy or pale blue so all interchangeable.

The problem is that I always look the same!!!

You must live somewhere warm to only need 3 sweaters - I've got 10!:smile1:

Yah, where I currently live, I can get away with a long sleeve shirt & a jacket...
I used to live in the NorthEast, so I definitely remember the days of tons of sweaters. I still visit sometimes, which I why i still have a few real 'coats.'

Funny you say that you always look the same. Me too, I've been asked more than once why is it that every time people see me in a picture, I look like an assassin :D My response is that I'd rather look like an assassin than sloppy. And for the 'why so much black?' question, I reply: Its not all black, its black and gray... and it saves me money because eventually the black fades to gray :graucho:

You're so lucky, as I have 2 Siamese cats so my sweaters are always getting covered in cat fur!!!

My number of pieces is changing as I shop for new winter clothing and some of my summer clothing is wearing out..

I'm not sure how many pieces I have at the moment but I've got a very long and expensive wishlist!!!

My love for black clothes, has caused my dislike for furbabies :shucks:
..... and as far as wishlists, go. I'm the queen.
here it is: http://www.polyvore.com/shopping_list/set?id=62108103
How much of that is actually going to happen?
My wallet hopes that some fall off.

I just cleared out even more stuff, I didn't count but I think I have about 35 pieces now. My closet is empty and I like it.

I think you might find that being so minimalist means your clothes wear out quicker and need replacing more often.

I don't have that much and I don't rotate very well either, so my clothes wear out...

You can carry minimalism a bit too far lol:smile1:

I think that's so smart! I have been working on building my wardrobe and only keeping pieces I love. My problem is figuring how to wear some pieces, so I always resort to the same things... Vince or Joie top with Jbrand or AG dark jeans and flats. I think it may be wise to get rid of the stuff I don't wear and add in pieces to what I do wear... I have a 1 yr old I hold quite often so heels are normally not safe because I'm so small and she is so heavy.

Any volunteer stylists out there :)????
