In Toronto you need to be prepared for all 4 seasons and everything in between (weather-wise and occasion):

1. MaxMara Manuela Coat Camel (oversized fit so goes well with thicker cashmere sweaters or over a blazer on -10 celsius or below days) originally purchased for the office
2. MaxMara Cashmere Lilia Coat (powder)
3. Max Mara Long black cashmere coat
4. Long Canada Goose Parka (for the truly cold days, cold days with snow, walking dogs)
5. Casual insulated technical jacket (for hiking in the winter)
6. Burberry Shearling - nicer coat for -10 celsius or below (can be worn over something light, like a tshirt or blouse)
7. More casual short puffer jacket (but still looks presentable)- dog walks
8. Harris Wharf London Long charcoal coat - one of my favourites for fall, amazing silhouette
9.Marc Jacobs Runway Grey wool/cashmere/silk jacket (this is lighter but works well with thick cashmere and a H shawl draped overtop)

Then there is the stuff for spring!!!!!!! I wish I lived somewhere weather is consistently warm!!!
Hi! I love Max Mara and that's the brand I buy for all my coats (except for a couple of Burberry trenches).
I only buy camel coats though, as the SA keeps telling me it's the warmest. I am cold natured, and I rather be a bit on the hot side than still freezing.

Since you have both camel and cashmere, do you think it's true camel is warmer than cashmere? I know warmth also varies upon the thickness of the fabric, but I am asking about your Max Maras.
I currently have a long camel wrap coat which I love, and that's my "below freezing" coat. I love the cashmere long wrap coat, but my SA swears it will not be warm enough for me, hence every time I get a long coat, I end up with camel again. Sigh, but to be honest, I am never cold when wearing any of my camel coats, so she may have a point. She says everyone wants cashmere because it sounds luxurious, and it's fine for a mid-length coat such as the cashmere Lilia, but it is not enough for below freezing.

I know thickness vary from coats, but seeing you have Max Mara in both, I would love to hear your thoughts on your camel Manuela vs. your long cashmere for below freezing temperatures. Thank you.

Hi!

Warmth rating from warmest:

1. Manuela Camel Coat -100% camel lined with viscose
2. Black Cashmere Coat - 100% cashmere lined with viscose (longer than the Manuela on me)
3. Lilia Coat - 100% double faced cashmere

Overall the Manuela coat is the warmest (it feels the heaviest). The black cashmere coat is a close second.

It goes without saying that the reason 1 and 2 are warmer is because of the viscose lining. However, it has been -20 degrees celsius here the past two weeks and neither are a good choice with a long sleeved shirt/cotton top or long sleeve thin cashmere. If I was wearing a heavy cashmere sweater (4 or 6 gage/ply) then Manuela is my first choice in -20 degree celsius and I have worn it before.

I think it matters how you layer. Do I expect to be warm in all three coats with a cotton long sleeve top below freezing temps, NO WAY. But if i wore a nice cashmere sweater (standard weight, not thin) then i can go out and feel nice and toasty in all three below freezing up to -10 celsius.

I hope this helps! I think it really does depend how you layer, will you be walking a lot, just sitting in a car, walking through a mall? Overall the Manuela is the warmest, your SA is correct (it feels the heaviest), but too be truly warm in frigid temps I wear my Canada Goose parka (which is what ive been wearing here in Toronto the past 2 weeks).

Thank you so much, this is super helpful!
And yes, when I wear my long camel Max Mara wrap coat, I am usually walking out and about in a big city such as NYC with a work outfit underneath. So for example, I will wear a jacket, then a cashmere sweater underneath the jacket. Then for the bottom, it is either a wool skirt with boots, or on days I can go casual (no client meetings), it will be skinny jeans and boots. Of course when not working, I am very casual such as as sweater, skinny jeans, and boots. I guess SAs know best... I should stick to camel. And yes, all my coats are 100% camel lined with viscose which makes them nice and toasty for me.

By the way, I have had the good fortune to shop at the Toronto Max Mara store on Bloor street three times. I am not sure if you get your Max Mara there, but if you do, you are lucky. Each one of those three times, I have found so many nice outfits there, even more options than the NYC flagship store on Madison avenue. The SAs are super nice and helpful also.

Thank you again for confirming the fabrics. I think I am destined to stay with camel forever.

I bought the Manuela online - Luisaviaroma had it 30% off February 2020! I was so happy! LOL

The other two I bought at the Halton Hills outlet mall (outside Toronto) back in December which had A LOT of incredible coats in every size. I so badly wanted to go to the Bloor Street location but everything went into lockdown in the city

You sound like me with all the layering/cashmere/jackets. Thats why my first choice was Manuela! It is elegant, warm on its own and you can layer over A LOT of clothing!

I love the Manuela as it is a classic, but those kimono sleeve were too wide for me. Hence, I went with the slimmer camel wrap version which is a more tailored look. I love the Manuela though, and I think I will try it on again next season but ask the SA to bring in a smaller size... that might do the trick as that coat seems to run larger than my other Max Maras. The Teddy is definitely not for me... too big and unstructured for my liking but it looks super cute on some ladies.

Wow... you did fabulous getting 30% off! I have never heard of that... winner!!!

By the way, as FYI... the top stitch edge on one of my coats started to unravel.... you know, those wide iconic stitches at the edges. My coat was a couple years old. I took it to my tailor and asked her to restitch it for me. She said she could not create those wide stitches, her stitches would be smaller, and she asked me if that was ok. I said, no, not ok. I said those wide stitches are part of the Max Mara coat look. I called Max Mara and asked if they would do it, and they said sure thing. They restitched my coat, and it looks great. I just wanted to share that given you also have many Max Mara coats.

I got my Manuela coat online too through Italist, and got 40% off the Canadian retail price for it. I've seen it on sale on MyTheresa too. Max Mara is SO overpriced in North America, which is really too bad because I would buy more.

I live in Vancouver and I have the following coats:
  1. Max Mara Manuela in camel
  2. Burberry Kensingon trench coat in stone (this was an older model that came with a detachable quilted lining for additional warmth, pics here: https://maddyloves.wordpress.com/2012/08/06/new-burberry-trench-coat/)
  3. Burberry wool-cashmere blend coat
  4. Burberry Brit wool coat I got from the Seattle outlets
  5. Mackage Harlowe parka
  6. Canada Goose Rossclair parka (I bought this recently for 40% off from Nordstrom through a private SA sale. SO happy I got it even though I don't need another parka, but it was too good of a deal to pass up)
  7. The Curated long classic teddy coat (love this, super cosy and 100% real wool too, with silk lining. Review here: https://maddyloves.wordpress.com/20...classic-teddy-coat-in-camel-from-the-curated/)
  8. Wool-cashmere blend double faced patch pocket coat from Reclaim
I also have other jackets and bits and bobs, like a lululemon rain coat, a must have for Vancouver, as well as two leather jackets from All Saints, and some high street brand jackets.

This is a very old thread-and in high summer not very seasonal-but I always love a good jacket(plus we’re just had Couture week Autumn Winter 2023/24).

I’ve got atm 11 jackets and coats, although I could have easily bought a Saint Laurent grain de poudre jacket last Friday on my day out if I hadn’t been on a self imposed clothing slow down (the crocodile biker is already accounted for although not fully paid).

It’s not jacket weather atm, but still an interesting thread, and in the U.K. summer is a fleeting season-I wore my Alexander McQueen tuxedo blazer for a date a few weeks ago and am sure in a few weeks I’ll be in a biker jacket again..

I’d love a new bespoke shearling winter coat-but that may be waiting until winter 2024/25

I only have one right that I’ve kept since I’m starting over with my closet and it’s a black wool coat with faux fur trim. I may get rid of this one since the trim makes it look matronly. I plan to get a few more in the future but they are so expensive for high quality ones with great materials. I’m trying to stay away from the synthetic ones which a lot are these days. Ideally, I’d like a black, camel, brown, ivory, pink, red, and navy coat. Grey is a maybe.

Only 2 of mine are actually winter coats-the rest are jackets, leather jackets(4), a shearling jacket, a raincoat which is miles too big etc.

I DO want a 3rd winter coat, but the one I want is very expensive , and I’ve spent a lot on clothes this year so it may wait until the following winter..the 2 I have are still in good condition.

Oh boy, coats - where do I start? I have so many and can't seem to stop buying. They hide a multitude of sins :) I am ashamed to admit but I have two wardrobes for me in my property - and one is dedicated only to coats and blazers. I must have 40+ at this point...

I mix high and low. I also love MaxMara. I have a three Burberry trench coats and a beautiful patchwork overcoat, which is not really my minimalist taste any more but I just can't bear to part with it. Also a couple each of Moncler and Canada Goose down coats for really cold weather, and Uniqlo/Zara for bad weather days.

For blazers, I love Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana and Brandon Maxwell for dressy days, but I also have a stockpile of Zara and H&M basic and tweed blazers for work and weekends - can never have too many! I find that something as simple as a change in blazer length really changes the look of an outfit, so I have multiple variations of each... I really need to stop

I have zero coats. I decluttered all my coats because I live in Texas. The part I live in gets cold maybe 2 days out of the year. Those days the whole city shuts down and no one leaves home. I do have two jackets. I have a black moto jacket and a brown aviator jacket. My weight yoyo's too much to buy a coat and keep it if I visit a cold area. I tols myself when the time comes where I will visit a cold wintery environment I will treat myself to a coat.

Are you me? I can’t stop buying coats and blazers either and at this point, can go a few weeks without repeating. Our “go to” coat brands are identical. I love Max Mara for dressier coats, Canada Goose and Moncler for more practical winter wear and Burberry for trench. I recently bought not one but three Toteme coats. Coats and blazers are like chips—You can’t just have one!
