I just came back from 2 years living in Africa where I had 0 coats.... yikes! Before that I lived in the Northeast and coats were LIFE. As a student with basically a $1k annual wardrobe budget (that doesn't go far when you're 18 and have no wardrobe built up) I still managed to accumulate and use some 8 coats -- from memory -- all sorts of cheap and mid-range affairs:
- Purple pea coat, ???, $100
- Every color of rainbow pea coat, vintage, $40?
- Grey mid-length, Jacob, $150
- White North Face puffer, $200 gift from parents
- at least 3 weird vintage coats, $50-150, that I rarely wore
- black raincoat from Banana Republic for like $100
A couple years ago I received my first Burberry coat as a present -- it's amazing, knee-length, my "forever" coat. Unfortunately it's now a good 1.5 sizes smaller than I am after I lost my svelte college figure... yikes! Plus I now live where it rains but never snows and a wool coat is terribly impractical. So this gorgeous black wool trench is sitting in a closet in PA and I am back to cheap raincoats.
But most ladies on this forum have some 30 handbags and, blasphemy though it is to admit, I think I would much rather have 30 coats than 30 bags (though I think I may be on my way to both). There are weather conditions to consider! Plus -- with a coat, you don't have to fuss about moving things from one location to another...
