How do you feel about Saffiano leather?

Is saffiano in the same league as LV's Epi leather? I don't have any Saffiano bag except 1 SLG from Prada. Wondering if the Saffiano will last as long as my 13 years old Epi.

I believe that Prada's saffiano leather are tanned with plant extracts and then dyed just like LV epi leather, so it should last. I have read in the Prada forum that the quality is not the same as in the past but this can be applied to all brands.

Saffiano is heat treated leather and Epi is chemically treated leather as for which will last longer, I think Epi ages a lot better, at least my small epi agenda has!

I always wondered whether saffiano should still be called leather. Isn't it leather that's been mixed in and hardened by plastic? Like, if you mix water with orange juice, can you still call it water?

I agree it does look good on structured styles and it's often wonderful when it comes to wear & tear, but there's nothing like the real smell and feel of full grain leather!

Not quite, here a Quote from an Article..

"Saffiano is a textured leather, meaning that it is a treated leather made with the texture pressed on it by a machine. "

Of coarse this is mainly referring to Prada since they were the inventor of it as numerous folks have stated. However a search on what Saffiano leather is will yield similar statements on it.

I am mixed on it, as my original post said i had yet to find a purse in it that appealed to me, that said eventually i have and while i wouldn't want my entire collection done in it after using this sort of purse done in this leather i do see it's benefits.

Ahhhh thanks for clearing that up for me!! I thought saffiano was the same as split leather. I bought a purse once that was made of saffiano leather, but then it said "split leather" on the tag.

It's still considered as leather BUT the problem with this is the underlying leather quality itself. With saffiano, lower cheap quality leather like corrected & pigmented leather can be substituted, and no one would know the difference. Saffiano just mean the crisscross hatchwork pattern imprinted on the top layer.

Prefect analogy would be solid wood flooring versus engineered wood flooring. Both are wood flooring but they are processed different. They appeal to different people for different reasons. Although solid wood can scratch more easily, you can always re sand and re stain. You can't do that with engineered wood.

I've seen some tags stating: Used with leather products. To me it is not the same as calfskin, lambskin or even cowhide, etc.. I think as consumers we need to be educated or the designers will pull the wool over our eyes.

Ahhhhh that explains where my confusion came from! Thank you!!

I have a beautiful Dolce and Gabbana saffiano leather bag. It looks so chic and rich and it's really easy to carry. The quality of the leather is so much better compared to Prada saffiano.

I really love my Prada saffiano bags. They look beautiful, are easily wearable and I've never had a minute of issues with quality. I like the structured appearance that the leather lends to the bags.

But, interestingly, I don't like it on other bags. I feel like Saffiano is a Prada thing so my brain can't bend to see it elsewhere without it seeming like a knock off. This is crazy I know but, it's what my brain sees. 😲

Love it! I am not particularly a fan of it, but I have about 4 bags that are made of saffiano, and each of them looks formal enough to take to work, and sturdy enough for day after day after day use, plus they are like waterproof and scratch resistant. When I have my days off and on weekends I do prefer soft smooth leather like calf and cow leather.

Hi all! Sorry if there's already a thread about this but I'm really curious about how people feel about Saffiano leather? Love it or hate it? Especially since it seems like most leather Prada or MK bags are made with it.

Personally, I always didn't like it until I got a MK wallet made out of Saffiano leather—and I realized that it really was very durable and easy to clean. It seems stronger and less prone to scratches than grainy leather, and really smooth leather (my favourite). However, I still think that Saffiano leather trades on...elegance...for functionality. I still would only considering buying a bag made of Saffiano leather if (in the future) I wanted a briefcase/handbag for work. Some of my friends claim to really like the look, while I don't, so I wanted to know if I was literally the only person who's not a fan of this trend?

It def looks more buisnessy/not very elegant and is bulky and stiff but it's super practical and lightweight I love slouchy leather but feel it's super heavy and the unstructuredness bugs me because I can never find what I'm looking for in my bag it's like a dark hole lol so I much prefer saffiano for everyday use

I didn't think I would like it because it looks so stiff, but I have two MK (Selma and Zip Top Jet Set Tote) and I'm sold on it now. Great for structured purses like these as it holds it's shape, and it wears like iron. One of mine is two years old and and the other is a year old, and they still look perfect.
