Brandy Unfairly Targeted, Civil Rights Group Claims

Black civil rights leaders in Los Angeles claim the California Highway Patrol has made singer/actress Brandy "a political trophy."

The Los Angeles City Attorney is deciding whether to file misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charges against Brandy, whose Land Rover slammed into a Toyota on the 405 Freeway killing the driver.

Today, Najee Ali, leader of Project Islamic HOPE, said the CHP's recommendation to file charges against the singer "is unfairly targeting her for prosecution because of her celebrity." Ali told TMZ he is organizing an e-mail campaign in the African American community to put pressure on City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo to reject the case.

Delgadillo says "We will treat this case like every other case and treat it very seriously because someone died."

No, Brandy is not being unfairly targeted. She killed someone. If it were Paris Hilton driving that car, and she caused an accident that led to the death of someone, then she'd be targeted, too.

It's not about race and it's not about celebrity status. (And neither of them aren't that big of celebrities, anyway.)

If it were someone else, who wasn't famous and they caused a five car pileup that led to the death of someone, it would be all over the news, too.

As a member of the African American community, I hafta laugh at this! :roflmfao: I s'pose Martha Stewart went to jail cos she did a presentation with Busta Rhymes on MTV. Guilty by association. Delgadillo's quote sounds good to me. Treat it like every other case and let the cards fall where they may. Gawd, when did I become so cynical!? I'm gonna leave this one alone. I'm so sorry this happened.

You could look at it like someone is trying to profit off of someone else's death. Or, you could look at it like this: If you were filing a wrongful death suit against somebody, how would you decide how much to sue for?

How about suing for the normal things you're suppose to sue for

-funeral costs
-legal costs
-loss of income or the cost of raising her child(and trust me, if this dead chick was a millionaire we would have heard about it, and it does not cost $2.7 Million a year for eighteen years to raise the average child in the U.S.).

I realize that this case will settle for way less (most other people think it will settle for a million max), but just the thought of driving around in a car or going on vacation with money you got from the death of a loved one makes me ill.

It is a fact that people with little or no resources are more likely to receive - and serve - harsher sentences for any and everything, from simple possession of a controlled substance to the most serious and violent of crimes, and while there are people who work tirelessly to combat this, it continues to be the norm, enjoying enough acceptance by the majority of the mainstream population so that it does continue to be the norm.

Unfortunately, that's very :true:

ITA!!!!! Using the $$$ you got for my loved ones death. :yucky: The thought of this makes me sick too.

I'd see it as any amount of $$$ isn't going to change the fact that my loved one was killed.

They could use the money to go on vacation.

Or, they'll use the money to set up a foundation in their daughter's name. Or donate it to her favorite charity. That's the decent thing to do. (That's what I'm hoping they're going to do.)

But her momentary lapse in concentration, her mistake KILLED someone. Someone is DEAD cause of her actions.

The driving laws state here in the USA ( go look it up, it is true for every state) if you are driving a car YOU are responsible at all times to keep your car under control. This goes for food service workers, celebrities, & eveyone else.

Yes, we have the same law, here.

But, just because it's a law, it doesn't necessarily make it infallible. We have had lot's of laws made, in the past, that have later been repealed, as they were found to be unjust, or deeply flawed and even the better laws are under constant review.

I agree that everyone should, indeed, be expected to keep their car under control at all times; to the best of their ability.

However, we are not machines and so, we can, unfortunately, only do so to an extent that is humanly possible.

All human beings are fallible and so, from time to time an accident will occur that is genuinely nobody's fault.

As I said before, I have no idea whether this is the case in this instance, of course. :D
