Thanks for the reply Doc.

Attaching more photos. The leather sure is VN. Does the leather look dry to you? The tear on the handle base pad does seem obvious from these 2 photos. Is it severe?

Thanks for the time!

could be vache natural could be vache espace which has more visible pores..
for a tear like you see at the handle base pad the bag ha been allowed to become very dry. Well conditioned cared for leather should stretch rather than tear.. to my eye from here the tear is hard to grade so I will stay with my original statement, yes eventually it will need fixed but I can not say when that will be... it may tear through soon or later but I can not say when.
wishing you best of luck...

Hi there,
those scratches will remain, but the scratches can be made to look better with conditioning eventually the bag will have other scratches and they will blend back into the bags patina and then become less noticeable, a luxury Again Restoring Spa kit for vintage box Calf would work beautifully on a bag like this...As would saphir renovanture
All the best doc
.

Thanks Doc..

I will follow your rocommended approach of
2 times Blackrock
2 times O for water proofing follow by
1 Blackrock

One question : I'm concerned my fingernails will scratch the leather I use my fingertips for buffing.
Can I use a Tey cloth to buff?
How different would the end result be?

Thanks for yor guidance .

Hi ,
great job getting the tarnish lifted off!
you have a cool Her bag there, its going to develop a deeper color as you proceed with conditioning..the marks are going to stay now and may become more noticeable if you use certain types of conditioners which are oily or greasy. I would use lexol PH wipes or a Luxury Again Spa Kit for Unfinished Leathers which has a special deep cleaner in it and a non greasy conditioner.
All the best doc

Hi doc,

Look what I found in my MIL's basement. Based on what you advised it seems like I can use the PH cleaner which says it's not oil based, but not the conditioner which is oil based. Should I just forego this altogether and use the wipes, which is probably fool proof? Or can I use the cleaner now while waiting for the LA Spa Kit?

Thanks again.

li would use the lexol ph wipes or wait .... preferably wait because the cleanser in your kit is deeper than lexol ph wipes are .
I hope that helps?

:

buffing is not done with finger tips...Application is..you can use gloves and buffing cloths

I think you would be better off with a luxury again spa kit for vintage box calf which will have everything you need all premeasured including gloves, cleanser, deep conditioner, weather protection, crack stabilizer, polish buffing cloths and step by step directions .. including how to buff and polish..

All the best, doc

Doc, would like to know if there's remedy for color loss? Thanks

Hey there,
Yes color restoration can be done and very nicely in the right hands. keeping In mind light colors with dark discolorations generally do not restore as well as darker colors do. Also Smooth leathers on the panels do not restorer as well as descrete areas such as corners.
I hope this helps?
All the best, doc

Hi doc,

Hope you are feeling better. First off, thanks so much for the advice throughout the years, I have fixed up and conditioned many of my bags with amazing results :smile1:

However, I have really hit a stumbling block with an Etoupe GP I just received. First off, how people treat their bags like this is utterly baffling to me. Second, help :smile1:

I bought it at a great price, but when I got it, the stains that looked just like dry spots and dirt are actually yellowed spots. I have never seen this on leather. I posted photos. I did a quick lexol-ph cleaning, and it didn't get rid of it, then I tried Blackrock's, to no avail.

What would you suggest, all four areas where the bag folds are yellowed, and the lowest part of the handles is also yellowed, as is the bottom rim of the bag?

Also, there are a couple holes on the corners, although these look less deep than I have seen on some Kellys.

So, my questions are- how to fix the yellowed leather?

With the handle being dirty, should I just keep lexol-ph wiping until it is gone?

Lastly, any suggestions for the 2 holes in the corners, should I use filler and then touch up with colored polish- can you tell I have read and reread this thread, :roflmfao:

Also, I have a number of Tarrago polishes I bought in the grey and taupe colors for some shoes. Have you been successful matching etoupe with Tarrago polishes, and if so, which ones did you combine. Thanks as always and have a wonderful day, hugs.

Hi, Docride!

I just received a new/old Kelly in natural Chamoix. It's date stamped 1994 but it's essentially NIB. The surface is un-marred, but I can feel its reluctance to be stretched or flexed.

I used to run a couple of tack stores, so I know how old leather can be somewhat delicate if it's not "exercised" for several years - even if it's "new". My concern is that the coating may crack if not gradually introduced to a conditioning regimen.

Am I right to be concerned? If so, how do you recommend I approach unused 21-year-old Chamonix?

BTW - I've used your "unfinished leather" kit on a few vintage items with terrific results!

Hope you come out the other side of your horse wreck without deficits - been in a few myself and it's always worrisome.
