Hi, Docride!

I just received a new/old Kelly in natural Chamoix. It's date stamped 1994 but it's essentially NIB. The surface is un-marred, but I can feel its reluctance to be stretched or flexed.

I used to run a couple of tack stores, so I know how old leather can be somewhat delicate if it's not "exercised" for several years - even if it's "new". My concern is that the coating may crack if not gradually introduced to a conditioning regimen.

Am I right to be concerned? If so, how do you recommend I approach unused 21-year-old Chamonix?

BTW - I've used your "unfinished leather" kit on a few vintage items with terrific results!

Hope you come out the other side of your horse wreck without deficits - been in a few myself and it's always worrisome.

Hey there,
Congratulations on finding such a special bag! And yes you are right to be concerned, Id use a Luxury Again Restoring Kit For Vintage Bags it has all sorts o products inside including a crack stabilizer and deep conditioner.

All is coming along healing wise now thank you.
All the best,doc

Hi Doc, this is more a hardware issue but you are a genius so I thought you may be able to help, my Constance with PHW has a lot of scratches on the H buckle. What is the best way to buff them? Thanks in advance.
Cheers
Suzie
P.S. If you need a pic just let me know.

I am not sure if you saw my question but it is a hardware issue so it may not be your expertise. Thanks

Dear doc, I believe you may have missed my post. I already tried more Lexol-ph, and it isn't working. I think my only option is to do blackrocks and obenauf LP and matching polish. Desperately waiting for your sage advice. I also posted more photos after my original post, as they wouldn't all post at once. Have a great 4th!

Hi doc,

Hope you are feeling better. First off, thanks so much for the advice throughout the years, I have fixed up and conditioned many of my bags with amazing results :smile1:

However, I have really hit a stumbling block with an Etoupe GP I just received. First off, how people treat their bags like this is utterly baffling to me. Second, help :smile1:

I bought it at a great price, but when I got it, the stains that looked just like dry spots and dirt are actually yellowed spots. I have never seen this on leather. I posted photos. I did a quick lexol-ph cleaning, and it didn't get rid of it, then I tried Blackrock's, to no avail.

What would you suggest, all four areas where the bag folds are yellowed, and the lowest part of the handles is also yellowed, as is the bottom rim of the bag?

Also, there are a couple holes on the corners, although these look less deep than I have seen on some Kellys.

So, my questions are- how to fix the yellowed leather?

With the handle being dirty, should I just keep lexol-ph wiping until it is gone?

Lastly, any suggestions for the 2 holes in the corners, should I use filler and then touch up with colored polish- can you tell I have read and reread this thread, :roflmfao:

Also, I have a number of Tarrago polishes I bought in the grey and taupe colors for some shoes. Have you been successful matching etoupe with Tarrago polishes, and if so, which ones did you combine. Thanks as always and have a wonderful day, hugs.

Dear Doc, first of all I want to use this opportunity to tell you how much I admire your amazing and vast knowledge of Hermes items! This is one of my favourite threads. :smile1:
These hand made items are pieces of art and I am so glad there are people like you who are able to help with bringing life to these wonderful items, even very old or neglected ones. It is wonderful that items that some talented people have put their time and energy constructing are valued and not just thrown away when they get old or get scuffs. There is of course H spa but not everyone, like myself, have an opportunity to bring bags to Hermes store. It is very valuable to learn what you can do yourself to improve the look of your precious leather item.

Then to my request for help to you dearest Doc. I have just bought a lovely Brique VL K28 wPHW and I am already concerned about it's condition and whether I can live with a bag in that condition. I haven't even received it yet, but to be able to sleep at night, I wanted to ask your thoughts about this bag and whether it can be improved by H spa or even better, by doing something yourself. Is this bag in good condition like stated in the add?
I had a friendly warning about VL leather from a very experienced H expert, so I got very worried.
I can't find the cleansing products you usually recommend from stores here in Scandinavia, but if there is something you especially recommend for this bag, I could try to find them online stores or evilBay.

Here are the pics where you can see the signs of wear of this bag:

Actually I didn't miss it I was answering and then tPF went down for updates and so I lost my work/ answer.

you don't want to do blackrocks or obenauf on this leather

a better or stronger cleaner such as Luxury Again cleaner could be tried oor tarrago cleanser.

matching polish in a light color wont cover dark stains ... and also because it will slip off on hands and clothing... so put that idea away as well

you will need color restorer carefully applied to those areas with missing color

Tarrago color dye would be a good option you will need to custom match with careful mixing of colors.

I hope this helps,
All the best doc

hello,
Thank you for your kind commentary.

Its a lovely Kelly, I like Vache Liegee leather.

Colored Vache Liegee is two toned so color restoration will never be able to look as it had originally ... does that make sense?

H Handbags shouldn't keep us up at night but know they do sometimes...If the fact that it's condition is as it is and knowing it will not look near new after a spa and or color work ... will bother you then maybe its not your bag?.

Because I believe condition reporting is subjective, I will refrain from commenting...

I hope this helps?

Hi Suzie,

Sorry I did miss it. ... this really is a forum for leather care... however I like using watch detailing papers in 3,2 and 1 microns....do take care too much rubbing or higher microns than what ive recommended means you will lose the plating on the base metal of your hardware.
Find them here at

Hi Doc, thanks so much! I will start with the cleansers, and order the colors. I realized that none of the grey polishes I had were a match for étoupe, the closest were a beige and a brown mixed together. That's why it finally made sense when people on this forum say étoupe is more of a brown to them than a grey, lol.

Hope you are feeling better. Hugs!

Hi Doc,

I just ordered a pre-loved Herbag with natural Vache Hunter trims. I saw your replies that you can B&O this leather safely but I found some images showing how Obenaufs can darken leather so much:

http://imgur.com/a/DmUx9

I suppose some darkening is to be expected but the darkening in the images I found were really severe. I tried searching but couldn't really find anything in the thread about obenaufs and color darkening. Since I am very happy with the original color of the VH leather, should I not use this product?

I do want protection because I live in Hong Kong where it is very humid and things get moldy very easily. Also I saw some Herbags with very bad water damage on the leather (like this one) so I really want to avoid that.

And one more question... I tried searching for "Saphir Renovant" but couldn't find any product matching this name... I did find Saphir "Renovator", "Reno'Mat" and "Renovating Cream". Which one did you mean?

Thank you so much for your help in advance! I have learned so much from this thread.

Actually I recommend these over obenaufs and they should not overly darken your leathers.
