What are the current choices for "a la carte" Special Order bags?

What is an Hermes Special Order?
Each year Hermes gives select clients the opportunity to customize a classic bag in a made-to-order a la carte process. This thread is only for bag A La Carte orders (please use the separate threads for watch SOs and shoe SOs). "A la carte", "SO" (special order), and "HSS" (horse shoe stamp) are used interchangeably on this forum.

When is the Special Order season?
Currently, there is one SO season each calendar year, opening around the middle of February and closing when slots run out or the end of December, whichever occurs first. New SO menus are typically leaked in February and remain constant until the following calendar year. Individual stores have complete discretion on when, within this window, they offer SO appointments to their clients.

Which specs can I customize?
Hermes defines which specs can be customized and these specs can change each SO season. Generally these specs include: leather type, leather color, and hardware color. At your SO appointment, your SA will present you will the limited menu of choices including bag types and sizes (Birkin 25, Kelly 28, etc), pre-set combination designs (line, verso, multico, etc), leather choices, leather colors, hardwares, and a map for which options can be selected for which bag type and size. Not all leathers and hardwares are allowed for all bag types and sizes.

Can I make physical changes to a bag definition during SO?
Sometimes clients would like to change a physical aspect of a bag, like increase the handle drop or add a pocket or a strap. Unfortunately, Hermes does not allow any type of alteration to the bag definition during SO. For extensive changes like these, a client would need to pursue a “Horizon order” which can be read about here.

How long will my SO take?
There is no way to predict how long a SO will take from placing the order to receipt of the finished product. Although Hermes has recently put forward efforts to fulfill a la carte orders within a year, it isn’t uncommon for bags to arrive in just a few months or also much longer than the year estimate.

Can my SA give me status my existing SO?
Unfortunately, the info that can be seen by SAs at the local store is very limited. They can generally see if the order is still outstanding (ie hasn’t been cancelled) but do not get status updates beyond that. Some stores will update clients when they get notice that a bag has been shipped from Paris but other stores wait until the bag is physically in store before alerting the client.

Do I need to place a deposit for SO?
In most regions of the world, a deposit is not required for SOs. However, some Asian and Middle Eastern locations do seem to request at least a partial deposit. Deposits may also be required in other regions if the SO selections are very personalized (ie if you have your personal initials hot stamped onto the bag) such that selling the bag to a different client, if the original client declines the bag, would be difficult.

Do I receive confirmation of my SO after placing my order?
In most regions of the world, the client gives their specifications to their SA and that is the last they hear about it until the bag arrives. Paris stores seem to be an exception to this and send the client a confirmation email within a few weeks of placing the order.

Is there a premium for a SO bag?
No, there is no premium price for SO bags. Their price is the same as any other standard stock bag of the same specifications at the time of delivery.

Is my SO a quota bag?
SO bags are generally counted toward a client’s two-bags-per-year limit at the time that the bag is received and paid for. If a client has already maxed out their quota bag allocation for the year, some stores will allow an exception to purchase your SO as a third bag for the year while other stores will require the customer to wait until a new calendar year before receiving the bag. These policies are subject to be changed per store at their convenience so it is always wise to check with your specific SA.

Where can I get ideas for my SO bag?
This thread shows unique combination bags and this thread shows contrasting stitching bags. Please consider posting your bag there once it arrives!

Curious and hopeful future owner of an SO to the group: was the opportunity to order a bag offered to you? Or did you ask whether you could create a bag? You’ve recently ‘designed’ a bag @gogingercat so perhaps you’ll respond quickly but I’m curious about everyone’s experience. And perhaps this question should be posed elsewhere…feel free to move it mods.

For context: I’ve been a regular client of my local boutique for about four years and have purchased three ‘quota’ bags, too many scarves to count, a few pieces of RTW, and some FJ, among other things. Not sure if I should broach the subject of an SO or wait to be invited and thus am asking the experts here.
I think you definitely qualify and you're a very loyal client. Are you direct with your SA? I'm kind of semi-direct, but I also joke around with my SA since that's kind of my personality. I'd definitely ask in the manner that you are comfortable with for your personality. If you're more subtle, try to latch on to something tangential in conversation and segue to the SO or something custom, two toned, etc. Or if you're direct, then outright say that you're interested in a special order, and you understand if you have to wait. I think from the time I joked about it to the time I got invited (out of the blue), it was like a year.

As I think I’ve mentioned, my appointments with my new SA are VERY quick…while we get along and chat a bit, it’s rare that an appointment lasts more than 15-20 minutes even when they offered me my last B30!!! I’ve come up with an opener and I’ll just have to slip it in before they ring me up I guess. I like your suggestion of saying that I understand if I have to wait.

Especially given we’re in June (how did that come round so fast lol), depending how the SM does it you could ask if all the SO slots have been filled for the current round?

Hi @tinkerbell68 ! I did actually ask about doing an SO sometime in the future when I updated my wishlist, which was maybe 1-2 months ago. I didn't think I would get the opportunity so soon.

I've been constantly editing my wishlist and have been updating them periodically via my SA but I believe my current wishlist is truly the final version lol 😅 I guess I've only tried to put down the bags I absolutely want. For reference the other three bags on the list were: Kelly Elan, B30 smooth Barenia and Saut 25 with very specific leather/hw combinations. So perhaps my SA thought these other three bags were not possible sometime soon and put me in for a SO. I know the general consensus amongst the seasoned H clients is that this year's SO color offerings are pretty underwhelming, but for a neutral (or noir) lover like me I'm happy to make my own custom bag!

I would say definitely bring it up, the worst they could say is no. If you don't ask, you'll never know.

Hope this is helpful. Please feel free to ask more questions if you want!

I’ve been given the opportunity to place a SO in Paris twice and both times it was offered to me without me asking. In the states, my SA asked if it’s something I would like to do at some point and I said yes. I’ve followed up and was told I wasn’t chosen this season (this was recently).

Got offered to make my first SO bag! I'm thinking of doing a verso B25 with black chevre exterior with framboise interior and BGHW. But does anyone have any opinions on B30 in chevre? Wondering if I should go bigger than 25. A second choice would be a B30 black togo PHW verso with some contrasting interior, but I'm thinking that if I wanted a black togo PHW bag I could just get it another time.

My appointment is in 2 days... 😬 Any advice appreciated!

Wanted to give a lil update on my SO order. I ended up going with B30 verso with Noir chevre exterior, Bordeaux interior, brushed palladium hardware and gris clair contrast stitching :) think I made the right choice since the framboise was veeeeery bright in person and my style is more dark neutral/classic.

I have an SO Birkin 30 in noir chèvre with Rouge H interior and graphite contrast stitching, shiny PHW, so not so far off what you've chosen (the Rouge H came out pretty much Bordeaux anyway ;)). I LOVE that bag, it's one of my favorites of all - it's both special and a forever classic. You will be thrilled!

I finally scored the coveted a la carte and I debated with myself for weeks to decide what I was going to choose. My original intent was to do a B25 sellier. When that wasn’t an option, I went all over the place in my mind. I knew I wanted a style/size I didn’t already own and was pretty sure I didn’t want a multicolor bag. I probably went through every possible combo option before arriving at the store. My dream was for a pink. But not even a pink stitch on the list, I couldn’t believe it. I worked with my SA and left the appointment with what I think is going to be perfect for me.
B25R, Togo, Rouge Sellier, Framboise lining, RGHW. I can’t wait for it to arrive. The only pic I was able to snag from the appointment is actually of the epsom swatch but here is a closeup of the color swatches. I think it looks great together and I can’t wait!

Datapoint from singapore. I was offered to make an SO by my SA. We have a good relationship, but l have to say that prior to the offer l bought rather frequently (monthly or two monthly), from scarves to slg to fj. My store has a ‘rule’ where you need to have had bought 3 quota bags before being eligible. The way my sa offered, it seems like he has 2 slots to offer to eligible customers for the year. One of the slots was offered to a longtime customer (more than 6 years). I had been shopping with the sa for 2.5 years. It seems like the sa has discretion of who he would like to offer the so slot to, once the eligibility rule has been fulfilled

What I usually do if I want something (SO or a particular bag) is “express interest in” or ask them “to keep me in mind”. Or we stand in front of the leather display and chat about the things I “would love to add to my collection.” If I get sounded out about something in advance of an actual offer I usually say I would have a hard time refusing an offer like that. I figure they like codes so I have my own!
I think it's always a good idea to let your SA know somehow exactly what you would like, also mentioning that you are patient and can wait for the right time. So far from my first, the SOs were offered, some because it was not possible to be given the PO equivalent at that point of time, or I declined all available offers at my appointments; this was how SO number one from FSH came about. Wishing you lots of luck for a slot soon!

I was fortunate to get a slot earlier this year. Looking forward to its arrival!

Here's the exterior with the graphite stitch, which is very subtle and is unnoticeable from a few feet away. Gris Clair will come up whiter and up close will look like a contrast stitch, while being much less noticeable from a distance (I did Gris Clair stitching on a blue Birkin and love it, it's very nautical).
