What are the current choices for "a la carte" Special Order bags?

What is an Hermes Special Order?
Each year Hermes gives select clients the opportunity to customize a classic bag in a made-to-order a la carte process. This thread is only for bag A La Carte orders (please use the separate threads for watch SOs and shoe SOs). "A la carte", "SO" (special order), and "HSS" (horse shoe stamp) are used interchangeably on this forum.

When is the Special Order season?
Currently, there is one SO season each calendar year, opening around the middle of February and closing when slots run out or the end of December, whichever occurs first. New SO menus are typically leaked in February and remain constant until the following calendar year. Individual stores have complete discretion on when, within this window, they offer SO appointments to their clients.

Which specs can I customize?
Hermes defines which specs can be customized and these specs can change each SO season. Generally these specs include: leather type, leather color, and hardware color. At your SO appointment, your SA will present you will the limited menu of choices including bag types and sizes (Birkin 25, Kelly 28, etc), pre-set combination designs (line, verso, multico, etc), leather choices, leather colors, hardwares, and a map for which options can be selected for which bag type and size. Not all leathers and hardwares are allowed for all bag types and sizes.

Can I make physical changes to a bag definition during SO?
Sometimes clients would like to change a physical aspect of a bag, like increase the handle drop or add a pocket or a strap. Unfortunately, Hermes does not allow any type of alteration to the bag definition during SO. For extensive changes like these, a client would need to pursue a “Horizon order” which can be read about here.

How long will my SO take?
There is no way to predict how long a SO will take from placing the order to receipt of the finished product. Although Hermes has recently put forward efforts to fulfill a la carte orders within a year, it isn’t uncommon for bags to arrive in just a few months or also much longer than the year estimate.

Can my SA give me status my existing SO?
Unfortunately, the info that can be seen by SAs at the local store is very limited. They can generally see if the order is still outstanding (ie hasn’t been cancelled) but do not get status updates beyond that. Some stores will update clients when they get notice that a bag has been shipped from Paris but other stores wait until the bag is physically in store before alerting the client.

Do I need to place a deposit for SO?
In most regions of the world, a deposit is not required for SOs. However, some Asian and Middle Eastern locations do seem to request at least a partial deposit. Deposits may also be required in other regions if the SO selections are very personalized (ie if you have your personal initials hot stamped onto the bag) such that selling the bag to a different client, if the original client declines the bag, would be difficult.

Do I receive confirmation of my SO after placing my order?
In most regions of the world, the client gives their specifications to their SA and that is the last they hear about it until the bag arrives. Paris stores seem to be an exception to this and send the client a confirmation email within a few weeks of placing the order.

Is there a premium for a SO bag?
No, there is no premium price for SO bags. Their price is the same as any other standard stock bag of the same specifications at the time of delivery.

Is my SO a quota bag?
SO bags are generally counted toward a client’s two-bags-per-year limit at the time that the bag is received and paid for. If a client has already maxed out their quota bag allocation for the year, some stores will allow an exception to purchase your SO as a third bag for the year while other stores will require the customer to wait until a new calendar year before receiving the bag. These policies are subject to be changed per store at their convenience so it is always wise to check with your specific SA.

Where can I get ideas for my SO bag?
This thread shows unique combination bags and this thread shows contrasting stitching bags. Please consider posting your bag there once it arrives!

My SA hinted that I might be able to do a SO if there would be enough slots, now that the colours are out I didn't hear from them about it - do they decide on the clients who get this opportunity beforehand or after the colours are released? I'm keeping my fingers crossed
The two events are completely unrelated. Each store gets a budget for how many orders they can take and then self determines when to offer out those slots to clients. They don’t typically do it all at once but more one here one there for a few months. They probably also need to see if anyone turns it down as they offer.

Thanks so much for your response, that's very insightful. So not hearing anything is not necessarily a bad thing yet and might take a few more days / weeks before they can determine that. Keeping everything crossed! x

It could be next season too F/W. I wish you the best of luck !🤞

The SA’s are normally certain of their top clients and the prioritization is done in advance for traditionally managed stores. I heard that Hermes is looking into reducing the frequency of SO offerings for the same clients to be able to expand the offering to those who never had the opportunity, however this may upset their top loyal customers and some regions don’t want to risk it.

Given that this season’s color palette is almost identical to the last one perhaps there will be few cancellations here and there especially that the SO suspends your 2nd QB “if you received your first one already”.

I think this is the underwhelming part - nearly no change (and taking ostrich off is not a good change…).

Anyone else feeling like this: My impression from this is that offering real SO do not seem to be important for H anymore, comparing it with many years ago it is a steady decline in options and - despite probably not being offered an other opportunity any time soon - I would have a real hard time deciding what to get, as I am not too tempted by this menu. Especially as the lining options do not nicely complement the exterior options in quite a number of my colour preferences. I would have loved another ostrich bag, a C or maybe a B (30?) but alas… at least I won’t be pining for a SO this year and save some money.

Very curious: What would all of you get, given you could do a SO with this menu?

I‘m also really curious though what the future holds for SOs, a nearly identical menu somehow feels like a strategic pause before a change, giving the company time to prepare, reconsider. Business woman speaking now, not bag lover.
If my dream of getting an SO ever became a reality, I would have no difficulty coming up with several options from this color chart in regular leathers with framboise lining :) Top contenders would be a kelly 25 bleu saphir togo, vert cypres clemence, and rouge h chevre.

Looking for advice and discussion. I'm 2 years into the journey in Australia. It's been really hard to get the basic noir B25 and K25 that I have been asking for. So far, I have a gris meyer B30 and craie B25. Now my SA mentions the way to get these wishes may be an SO in April. I'm thinking a B25 noir verso (with i don't care what inside). I'm thinking maybe it would be slightly easier to get the Kelly in store this year, because more stock of black Kelly's since they are so popular.

Is this a waste of an SO or a smart decision? Is there always black on the SO menu?

I'm being told that SO season is only April and October, but it seems on this thread that people are getting SO's all through the year. What is the deal?

TIA

Each store gets to decide for themselves when they send in a la carte orders. Sounds like your store only uses two specific months. It also sounds like your SA is saying they cannot get you the bag you want so they will give you an a la Carte instead so that you can make it yourself. I think you should choose a spec where if it were the last bag you ever get from Hermes, you would be most satisfied and happy. Black is a perfectly rational choice, especially if you choose something like chèvre leather which is rare outside of SO.

My store will start SO appointments early March. Also, I dont think its a bad idea doing a black SO. This way you will guarantee the bag you want. I have been asking for gris meyer for 2 years, this year will hopefully be my chance to get it through SO 🙏🏻

My SA also hinted at an SO but also said it's for tenured clients, I've been with her for almost 3 yrs, what is the usual lenght of time to be considered for an SO? Crossing fingers this is my year, doing color combinations in my head.
I think it varies a lot both from store to store. Maybe also how your SA compares you as a customer to her/his other customer. I had been a client at Hermes for 11 years before I got the opportunity. My store is small though so I don´t think they get so many SO slots in a season.

It seems to me based on what you wrote that your SA is contemplating offering an SA opportunity to you but maybe it also depends on how many SO slots your SA will be allocated.

OOOOOOOooooooooh, I got an unexpected slot for a Special Order! My SA doesn't know the chart and hinted it will hopefully have lots of summer colours as she said last chart was "so boring". I, of course, did not tell her I knew the colours are the same
But, super excited for next weeks appointment

so exciting! Let is know if there Are other colours!

It’s linked in the sticky under Most Recent Known Selection Definitions and goes here. Unless changed this week for 2025, the choices for all years prior to this were: PHW, GHW, PBHW, or RGHW.
Do you know if HACs are part of the menu since 2021? I haven’t seen an updated one but I thought I remembered someone posting that they were able to place a SO for a HAC within the last 2 years? Thanks!

Thank you so much. This is great advice. If I go for a Noir B25, is Togo still the best leather choice though? Chèvre is more for Kelly bags, is that right? I know Clemence might be an option for a Birkin, but it's thicker and will slouch right? I think I will be happy just with a classic black birkin. maybe framboise inside or something and ?rose gold hardware (although I've been warned off this before)

Many people love chèvre in Birkins and it is a mostly SO only spec so lots of people take advantage of the opportunity to order a chèvre birkin. I prefer Togo. I think clemence is no longer allowed for Bs but I’d have to see the update mapping. In a B25 clemence won’t slouch.
