Since this thread is now huge and the internal links to frequently asked questions no longer work, here is a brief FAQ for newcomers to the Hermes Special Order process.

What are the current choices for "a la carte" Special Order bags?

What is an Hermes Special Order?
Each year Hermes gives select clients the opportunity to customize a classic bag in a made-to-order a la carte process. This thread is only for bag A La Carte orders (please use the separate threads for watch SOs and shoe SOs). "A la carte", "SO" (special order), and "HSS" (horse shoe stamp) are used interchangeably on this forum.

When is the Special Order season?
Currently, there is one SO season each calendar year, opening around the middle of February and closing when slots run out or the end of December, whichever occurs first. New SO menus are typically leaked in February and remain constant until the following calendar year. Individual stores have complete discretion on when, within this window, they offer SO appointments to their clients.

Which specs can I customize?
Hermes defines which specs can be customized and these specs can change each SO season. Generally these specs include: leather type, leather color, and hardware color. At your SO appointment, your SA will present you will the limited menu of choices including bag types and sizes (Birkin 25, Kelly 28, etc), pre-set combination designs (line, verso, multico, etc), leather choices, leather colors, hardwares, and a map for which options can be selected for which bag type and size. Not all leathers and hardwares are allowed for all bag types and sizes.

Can I make physical changes to a bag definition during SO?
Sometimes clients would like to change a physical aspect of a bag, like increase the handle drop or add a pocket or a strap. Unfortunately, Hermes does not allow any type of alteration to the bag definition during SO. For extensive changes like these, a client would need to pursue a “Horizon order” which can be read about here.

How long will my SO take?
There is no way to predict how long a SO will take from placing the order to receipt of the finished product. Although Hermes has recently put forward efforts to fulfill a la carte orders within a year, it isn’t uncommon for bags to arrive in just a few months or also much longer than the year estimate.

Can my SA give me status my existing SO?
Unfortunately, the info that can be seen by SAs at the local store is very limited. They can generally see if the order is still outstanding (ie hasn’t been cancelled) but do not get status updates beyond that. Some stores will update clients when they get notice that a bag has been shipped from Paris but other stores wait until the bag is physically in store before alerting the client.

Do I need to place a deposit for SO?
In most regions of the world, a deposit is not required for SOs. However, some Asian and Middle Eastern locations do seem to request at least a partial deposit. Deposits may also be required in other regions if the SO selections are very personalized (ie if you have your personal initials hot stamped onto the bag) such that selling the bag to a different client, if the original client declines the bag, would be difficult.

Do I receive confirmation of my SO after placing my order?
In most regions of the world, the client gives their specifications to their SA and that is the last they hear about it until the bag arrives. Paris stores seem to be an exception to this and send the client a confirmation email within a few weeks of placing the order.

Is there a premium for a SO bag?
No, there is no premium price for SO bags. Their price is the same as any other standard stock bag of the same specifications at the time of delivery.

Is my SO a quota bag?
SO bags are generally counted toward a client’s two-bags-per-year limit at the time that the bag is received and paid for. If a client has already maxed out their quota bag allocation for the year, some stores will allow an exception to purchase your SO as a third bag for the year while other stores will require the customer to wait until a new calendar year before receiving the bag. These policies are subject to be changed per store at their convenience so it is always wise to check with your specific SA.

Where can I get ideas for my SO bag?
This thread shows unique combination bags and this thread shows contrasting stitching bags. Please consider posting your bag there once it arrives!

Sorry, I don't think I formatted my post above correctly!:P My question for the Veterans: What would be considered "SO allocation criteria"? I know there are never any hard rules with H, but curious what some "qualifiers" are in the SM's eyes to be approved for a spot? My SA briefly mentioned this to me recently and I was shocked, as I am a newer (2yr) client and not a big spender.
There's no real thing and I think the poster you were quoting was trying to point that out. Each SM runs their ship however they want. Some want to reward long term high spending clients and give SOs as a trophy. Other SMs use SOs for newer clients to entice on-going long term spend (ie "hook them early"). The poster you quoted, I believe, was trying to point out that if management switches and you get a SM who wants to give SOs to long term clients who is replacing one who gave SOs to first time clients, the new SM might be annoyed that a newbie is getting a SO and switch things up. In reality, all of these circumstances are extremely rare and should not create a panic. In 99.99% of all cases, the person who places the SO receives the SO in a timely manner and exactly as ordered. As for gaming the system to get a SO offer, just be yourself, be loyal, buy things you love, and shop often; the rest is completely out of your control.

Yep, this is exactly what I was saying; I personally know of two cases which were very very close to exactly this

if management switches and you get a SM who wants to give SOs to long term clients who is replacing one who gave SOs to first time clients, the new SM might be annoyed that a newbie is getting a SO and switch things up

That said, the clients in these cases (one of whom is a family member of mine, so I witnessed the drama close up) did receive their SO bags; they were just put through the wringer on pickup times and told their bags would be released into sales if they did not get them within two weeks or so (both were out of country clients). One of these cases was in Paris, the other was outside the EU.

It is an edge case, but IIRC the question was asked, so, answered :p I don't think anyone should be stressing here.

Receiving SOs not as ordered (a change of HW, etc. that was not communicated) is a different situation entirely.

to be liked and not entitled

Thank you both for your insight! It's always interesting to hear veteran perspectives on these topics. I have a wonderful relationship with my SA and will just continue being genuine and enjoying all my shopping experiences:smile:
For example, my SA said a client needs to have been offered 3 QBs from the store before a SO. But of course I take everything they say with a grain of salt because maybe I just didn't spend enough

In my personal experience (have 4 SO bags currently with an additional one on order) as well as anecdotes from friends, the fastest way to be offered a SO is to buy at a made to measure event. Not sure how invites work for these events as we have been long standing clients but on 2 occasions near the conclusion of the order, I have been asked about my interest in a SO. The other two were randomly offered to me.

My friend was told this 3 QB criteria at the Seattle store.

I’ve been told 2 years relationship with 1 SA + $100k spend (unsure if it’s $100k lifetime spend or annual spend). Funnily enough, I ended up getting a SO even though I didn’t meet either requirement

I was only given ~1 week to submit my SO, though, so it could be that I was backfilling for someone else.

If it took three "quota bags" to get an SO, I would have way too many Hermès bags ;)

If it took $100K each time to get an SO, I'd be broke
But I would say the latter is closer to accurate in terms of allocation criteria. I know for a fact that one can get an SO as a first "quota bag", or have a couple SOs in a row. Also, if a client is loyal and has a good profile, but can't find the exact bag she/he/they want because it's rare or not in production, an SO may be offered so that client may create their dream bag.

Shocked to get the call earlier this week that the SO I placed in late February and was submitted in March was ready for pickup! I have gold maxi Kelly, but this is my first ever day sized Kelly 🙂

Kelly 28 in chevre mysore with a Bleu France exterior, tonal stitching, Bleu Saphir interior and brushed gold hardware. Not a particularly bold combination, but the brushed gold against the Bleu France gives it all the character it needs!

18 year old me is screaming of joy!!!! I don’t remember where I saw the Birkin the first time, but I remember wanting it from very young age. At that time in Lisbon the system was different and it was like a (5 year) waitlist, you put your name and phone number and someone would call you whenever something (anything) would arrive. I thought of putting mine thinking by the time they call me I would have saved enough (I should have done that). I also don’t remember the first time I heard about a special order but I knew that was my ultimate goal, I would be extremely happy if I could personalize my own Hermes bag. I present my first Birkin and first SO, and if is the only one on both I will still be very happy!
B35, swift noir, bleu marine stitching, rose Mexico interior with permabrass hardware. Tomorrow I’m going to London for work and I think I need to take it!!! Sorry for the long post 🤪 I’m so excited!!!!
