Since this thread is now huge and the internal links to frequently asked questions no longer work, here is a brief FAQ for newcomers to the Hermes Special Order process.

What is an Hermes Special Order?
Each year Hermes gives select clients the opportunity to customize a classic bag in a made-to-order a la carte process. This thread is only for bag A La Carte orders (please use the separate threads for watch SOs and shoe SOs). "A la carte", "SO" (special order), and "HSS" (horse shoe stamp) are used interchangeably on this forum.

When is the Special Order season?
Currently, there is one SO season each calendar year, opening around the middle of February and closing when slots run out or the end of December, whichever occurs first. New SO menus are typically leaked in February and remain constant until the following calendar year. Individual stores have complete discretion on when, within this window, they offer SO appointments to their clients.

Which specs can I customize?
Hermes defines which specs can be customized and these specs can change each SO season. Generally these specs include: leather type, leather color, and hardware color. At your SO appointment, your SA will present you will the limited menu of choices including bag types and sizes (Birkin 25, Kelly 28, etc), pre-set combination designs (line, verso, multico, etc), leather choices, leather colors, hardwares, and a map for which options can be selected for which bag type and size. Not all leathers and hardwares are allowed for all bag types and sizes.

Can I make physical changes to a bag definition during SO?
Sometimes clients would like to change a physical aspect of a bag, like increase the handle drop or add a pocket or a strap. Unfortunately, Hermes does not allow any type of alteration to the bag definition during SO. For extensive changes like these, a client would need to pursue a “Horizon order” which can be read about here.

How long will my SO take?
There is no way to predict how long a SO will take from placing the order to receipt of the finished product. Although Hermes has recently put forward efforts to fulfill a la carte orders within a year, it isn’t uncommon for bags to arrive in just a few months or also much longer than the year estimate.

Can my SA give me status my existing SO?
Unfortunately, the info that can be seen by SAs at the local store is very limited. They can generally see if the order is still outstanding (ie hasn’t been cancelled) but do not get status updates beyond that. Some stores will update clients when they get notice that a bag has been shipped from Paris but other stores wait until the bag is physically in store before alerting the client.

Do I need to place a deposit for SO?
In most regions of the world, a deposit is not required for SOs. However, some Asian and Middle Eastern locations do seem to request at least a partial deposit. Deposits may also be required in other regions if the SO selections are very personalized (ie if you have your personal initials hot stamped onto the bag) such that selling the bag to a different client, if the original client declines the bag, would be difficult.

Do I receive confirmation of my SO after placing my order?
In most regions of the world, the client gives their specifications to their SA and that is the last they hear about it until the bag arrives. Paris stores seem to be an exception to this and send the client a confirmation email within a few weeks of placing the order.

Is there a premium for a SO bag?
No, there is no premium price for SO bags. Their price is the same as any other standard stock bag of the same specifications at the time of delivery.

Is my SO a quota bag?
SO bags are generally counted toward a client’s two-bags-per-year limit at the time that the bag is received and paid for. If a client has already maxed out their quota bag allocation for the year, some stores will allow an exception to purchase your SO as a third bag for the year while other stores will require the customer to wait until a new calendar year before receiving the bag. These policies are subject to be changed per store at their convenience so it is always wise to check with your specific SA.

Where can I get ideas for my SO bag?
This thread shows unique combination bags and this thread shows contrasting stitching bags. Please consider posting your bag there once it arrives!

Seems FSH SOs are still coming through much quicker than home stores outside Paris. I’d put in a SO in November 2022 at FSH and it was ready to be picked up 5 months later. Placed another SO at my home store prior and its been 10 months of waiting and counting. Could it be possible that other stores receive the bags and keep them hostage until a certain spend threshold is hit?

I doubt that. We've seen bags come in quickly from plenty of places outside Paris. I had a bag at Madison come in under 10 weeks whereas I am still waiting on one from Paris for a year.

It's still funny to think of the "old days" (five years ago even LOL) when a year was a SHORT wait for an SO!

Thank you for the reassurance. On another note, it remains unclear to me what the “waiting” period after placement of an SO means with respect to the possibility of getting another QB. Hypothetically, would someone be able to get a QB let’s say 10-12 months after placing the SO (in case the bag hadn’t come im yet) AND their SO if it comes in shortly thereafter?

Yes.

According to stories on this forum, if that client (having placed an A La Carte bag order and while waiting accepted a Birkin or Kelly) has already purchased a Birkin or Kelly that year or in the past 12 months (stores see this differently) - meaning that the SO pickup would result in 3 Birkins/Kellys that year - some stores will hold the SO for a period, and some will allow for 3 bags that year.

Apparently, for stores that operate on a "wishlist", wishlists can also be cancelled after a client places an SO, and the client will need to renew the wishlist. (My stores don't do wishlist, so I can't personally speak to this.)

It's not unreasonable to think that a store would consider SO placement to be roughly equivalent to an iconic bag offer, and so some/many stores might wait some time after an SO offer/placement to make another offer. That said, people have placed SOs and bought a Birkin or Kelly on the same day; many many people, including me, have bought or been offered Birkins/Kellys close before or after placing an SO. As always with H, "rules" get elastic and experiences vary.

In my experience it won’t halt your offers and any offers won’t mean you can’t take your SO. Since I placed my first SO I had 3 QB, 1 C and one more SO placed in the year following. I am still allowed to pick up that first SO right away now that it has arrived. My SA has said that the general rule is two B/K per year and 6 or 7 bags total per year, but that they will bend the rules on a case by case basis.

Still waiting on a constance that a SO'd at George V in June 2022.

I've heard anecdotes from the US that some stores will hold a SO that comes in after you hit your quota (e.g., SO shows up in November and you need to pick it up in January).

All my FSH SOs have definitely arrived much faster than other countries, they averaged 6 months to a year with only one notable delay due Hermes dealing with the stinky leather issues. My fastest was < 10 weeks also from FSH and the reason I know this was the date of the email confirmation of one modification of the specs, immediately after which my SA put the order in and then the email from my SA for collection. No one has ever held back my SO for purchase but then I have never maxed out my worldwide "annual quota". I do however know personally of friends who have experienced this and a few who also been told to hit a certain spend before the SO was released. I try very hard to post info I have personal experience of or can actually verify to assist other members as accurately as possible. Reading the forum you can see that what others have contributed can vary.

Yes I heard this too about spend level to release a SO for pick up.
