What are the current choices for "a la carte" Special Order bags?

What is an Hermes Special Order?
Each year Hermes gives select clients the opportunity to customize a classic bag in a made-to-order a la carte process. This thread is only for bag A La Carte orders (please use the separate threads for watch SOs and shoe SOs). "A la carte", "SO" (special order), and "HSS" (horse shoe stamp) are used interchangeably on this forum.

When is the Special Order season?
Currently, there is one SO season each calendar year, opening around the middle of February and closing when slots run out or the end of December, whichever occurs first. New SO menus are typically leaked in February and remain constant until the following calendar year. Individual stores have complete discretion on when, within this window, they offer SO appointments to their clients.

Which specs can I customize?
Hermes defines which specs can be customized and these specs can change each SO season. Generally these specs include: leather type, leather color, and hardware color. At your SO appointment, your SA will present you will the limited menu of choices including bag types and sizes (Birkin 25, Kelly 28, etc), pre-set combination designs (line, verso, multico, etc), leather choices, leather colors, hardwares, and a map for which options can be selected for which bag type and size. Not all leathers and hardwares are allowed for all bag types and sizes.

Can I make physical changes to a bag definition during SO?
Sometimes clients would like to change a physical aspect of a bag, like increase the handle drop or add a pocket or a strap. Unfortunately, Hermes does not allow any type of alteration to the bag definition during SO. For extensive changes like these, a client would need to pursue a “Horizon order” which can be read about here.

How long will my SO take?
There is no way to predict how long a SO will take from placing the order to receipt of the finished product. Although Hermes has recently put forward efforts to fulfill a la carte orders within a year, it isn’t uncommon for bags to arrive in just a few months or also much longer than the year estimate.

Can my SA give me status my existing SO?
Unfortunately, the info that can be seen by SAs at the local store is very limited. They can generally see if the order is still outstanding (ie hasn’t been cancelled) but do not get status updates beyond that. Some stores will update clients when they get notice that a bag has been shipped from Paris but other stores wait until the bag is physically in store before alerting the client.

Do I need to place a deposit for SO?
In most regions of the world, a deposit is not required for SOs. However, some Asian and Middle Eastern locations do seem to request at least a partial deposit. Deposits may also be required in other regions if the SO selections are very personalized (ie if you have your personal initials hot stamped onto the bag) such that selling the bag to a different client, if the original client declines the bag, would be difficult.

Do I receive confirmation of my SO after placing my order?
In most regions of the world, the client gives their specifications to their SA and that is the last they hear about it until the bag arrives. Paris stores seem to be an exception to this and send the client a confirmation email within a few weeks of placing the order.

Is there a premium for a SO bag?
No, there is no premium price for SO bags. Their price is the same as any other standard stock bag of the same specifications at the time of delivery.

Is my SO a quota bag?
SO bags are generally counted toward a client’s two-bags-per-year limit at the time that the bag is received and paid for. If a client has already maxed out their quota bag allocation for the year, some stores will allow an exception to purchase your SO as a third bag for the year while other stores will require the customer to wait until a new calendar year before receiving the bag. These policies are subject to be changed per store at their convenience so it is always wise to check with your specific SA.

Where can I get ideas for my SO bag?
This thread shows unique combination bags and this thread shows contrasting stitching bags. Please consider posting your bag there once it arrives!

My first ever SO, the present that my DH secretly bought from my SA.
She said that they had several SO in stock because the store is new. These are my husband’s words, I’ll get all the details from my SA when I meet her:smile:
I don’t know the names of the colors so help me please if you have an idea!
I’m literally on cloud 9 here!

what a pretty combination!!! honestly pretty hard to tell bc light changes the color of bags

you can probably guess the colors better depending on what colors were offered the year it was ordered?
this is for 2022

looking at that probably... assuming this is epsom from 2022
mauve sylvestre + rouge casaque + ghw

Hi fellow TPFers. I have recently been offered the opportunity to personalize an Herbag at my local boutique. as far as you know, does this qualify as a ‘special order’? It is my understanding that the final bag bears an HSS, so perhaps yes. For those who already experienced this, any additional info about what options are available? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Have they said in what way you can “customize” it? Herbag is not on the a la carte menu so I am very curious as to what their intent is. (Though, many SAs know less about the process than we do so they may have suggested it not realizing it wasn’t an option?)

As far as I understood, you should be able to customize everything from A to Z (color of the fabric, color of the leather, stitches, hardware etc.). Thx

Hi all, I’ve just been offered my first SO and am in a dilemma.
I’ve seen the 2023 SO menu and am wondering if it’s the same worldwide?
If yes, it does not seem to have the colours I like and I’m wondering if I should ask my SA if I can delay my SO.
Would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you! ☺️

Yes, it’s the same world wide. Your SA can accept your declining of the SO opportunity but probably can’t ironclad promise to give you a slot next time as budgets, competition, and rules are constantly changing.

It's not the greatest selection ever, but a bird in the hand....
In other words, if your SA can guarantee you a spot later that's wonderful, BUT it's pretty hard for any SA to do that, depending of course on each store. There is also the fact that for the past few years the a la carte "menu" has stayed the same for a few seasons at a time - you might be waiting a while.

I have done SOs with very limited selection and it wasn't ideal, but still a wonderful opportunity. It can be a good time to do a very simple/classic combo, or to get a color you've always wanted that just has never shown up in production. Leather and hardware can make an SO special even if the color is something as classic as black. Stitching too!

Which colors do you like?
I like the pinks and the reds, and based on the "menu", the only pinks/reds that I don't have are:
- Rose sakura but only available in swift and as I'm looking at a B25 sellier/mini Kelly, swift won't work;
- Rose mexico but only available in togo and I've many togo bags so I would really love to have a different leather;
- Rose texas but I'm not keen on the orangey tinge.

For leather, I would really like chevre mysore as that's the only non-exotic leather that I don't have, hence it seems like I'm limited to the colours for that leather. Not too sure if I'm too hung up over the leather?

One potential option is to SO a mauve pale (body) with capucine (accents) in chevre mysore... But definitely not my first choice as the rose sakura has been on my mind.

I do have another question - Can I have two different leathers on the bag? Eg. Mauve pale/chevre mysore (body) with rose sakura/swift (accent)?

Thanks @addiCCted @acrowcounted @QuelleFromage for your replies. I'll try and make this SO work cos yes, the rules change all the time and I'm very sure this experience will be wonderful and it's really priceless, hence I really shouldn't/couldn't give it up.

I skipped my SO last year as well. I couldn't choose what I wanted either a Kelly or a Birkin. I wasn't sure about colour and skin either. I was allowed to place my SO this fall.

If it's a B25 sellier or MK, then it's Epsom only for the B25 and Epsom or Chèvre for the Mini Kelly. Personally I always end up ordering chèvre ... last SO I was dead set on Togo so I could do a retourné Kelly 25, and once I got to the order I ended up doing a retourné B25 because I couldn't imagine doing anything but chèvre. If you love your Epsom bags, though, you will feel different.

Are you also set on a bicolor? And no, you can't combine leathers. The bicolor (multico) has to be from one leather's color selections. It does make you a bit freer from the very limited linings available this particular season.

I'm quite set on Chevre cos it's the only leather that's missing from what I have (other than matt croc, lizard and ostrich ). Looks like I only have Mini Kelly as an option... Unless I want a K25 sellier or B25 retourne...

Yes, I'm set on a bicolor (multico). Thanks for letting me know that I can't combine leathers. I shall focus on putting together a few ideal combis within the colour menu for Chevre.

But my heart is still with rose sakura... I can only hope that another SO comes along some time down the road where they offer rose sakura in Chevre.

Thanks so much for your advice! Thanks to @Tasha1 and @blinggirl74 for your replies as well.
