While I adore Hermes riding boots, my calves are just a little over 14 inches and I have trouble with most high boots. It might seem like sacrilege to do so, but I have a wonderful cobbler here who sews elastic gussets into my boots for me, and replaces leather soles with rubber so I won't slip. The gussets are cut on the inside of the boot and the leather is sewn onto the elastic in strips so that the gusset barely shows, and I usually wear high boots with long skirts. I hate to desecrate a museum piece, but it's the practical thing to do.
