hey lovely Hermès crew. I have seen a wonderful Kelly from 2006 in Box leather. In my dream specs. The only thing that bothers me are some serious scratches at the back (see attached). Would those be treatable by the Hermès spa? I'd be fine to still see slight scratches, but would need a (major) improvement to the current status...looking forward to your thoughts and input. xx

Looks like the owner wore it with buttoned coats and jeans, etc. These scratches will never disappear, but will blend in much better after treatment. A couple of the scratches look like they go through to expose the underlayer of the leather, in which case, that's forever (can be touched up but it wears off). I would ask about the deeper scratches.
In a bright light, even with patina, you will also always see the scratches.
It's all about what you can live with; for me, this bag would probably be fine after a good spa (assuming price is right), but I expect scratches on preloved Box, even non-vintage like this one, and these are on the back, again consistent with wearing on a strap against clothing with hard buttons, etc.

Agree with above. In the past, I’ve sent box kelly bags to H spa before and gotten them back not all that different from before.

I just got back my box kelly longue wallet from H spa and it looks pretty good. based on that, I just sent two more in (mainly to have hw replaced, but they will buff and spa as per their recommendation*

But, I would say, if you don’t want these scratches, I recommend staying away from box.

The scratches honestly are part of the nature which will resolve into a patina

ETA: They told me that they would get me the second quote, but I assume that is for spa as the hw estimate below refers to plural bags

CLEAN.+MAKEUP+FINISH. - BAGS / CLASSIC LEATHERS 325 USD
· REPL. CLASP+SIDE STRAP PLATE+BRACKET ALL BAGS / ALL LEATHER 560 USD
· REPLACEMENT PM/GM PADLOCK - ALL BAGS 115 USD
· REPLACEMENT 2 HOOKS - EVELYNE / ALL LEATHERS 315 USD
Total 1315 USD

Many thanks for your reply and insights. Yes, I was also thinking that the previous owner must have worn the bag a lot with a coat or whatever to get those kind of scratches. I will see the bag in person mid week and will have a close look if the scratches are going as deep as the underlayer. I personally think box is the most beautiful leather and am happy to give this bag another life at my home but would definitely bring it in to spa before wearing it. I just was sent some pictures of the corners and this one is the "worst" corner of all 4. So not too bad for its age.
Price is the same as my Kelly 28 sellier Epsom was this spring.

absolutely nothing to loose sending it to spa and everything to gain
your knowledge of the market will be your guide as to whether it is worth the asking price
you could use the cost of sending it to spa as a negotiating point
although spa is only a few hundred dollars

my experience with box is that once you have got used to thinking about your nails opening and closing
and also stopped thinking 'I must be ultra careful'
so that you use it sensibly and not nervously
it is a lot more robust than a lot of people would have you believe
It is not as popular as it is for nothing!

many thanks for your thoughts. I definitely see the potential of the bag and hopefully will be able to buy it this week.

I am waiting on some scarves to return for Paris. I don't know if it has been mentioned but hermes will pleat your scarves (any size, old, new) for a small cost. I always liked the plisse scarves but I never purchased. When the SA suggested it to me as an option to revitalise scarves, I thought it was a good idea and sent in some 90cms.

Like anything that goes to spa, process was the same. Items sent in, examined and quote emailed for approval. Turnaround was quoted 6 months (no different to other items) at cost of 65 USD each (I'm converting from a different currency).

(I don't know if this has already been mentioned by other members so I might be repeating)

These are my recent spa costs on a birkin. (August 2023)
Clean $555
Re-glue handles $210
Re-stitch gussets $155
Replace turn lock. $355

In agreeing to the estimate, all I really wanted was to have the bag cleaned, but they would not take no for an answer on the rest of the work. They kept calling me back until I said yes to all of it. I think they would have let me pass on the turn lock, but claimed everything else was necessary to maintain the structure of the bag.

It was sent to LA. They quoted me a couple of months, but it was a year before I got it back. Having heard about the long times associated with spa work, I did not think twice until I hit the 1 year anniversary of dropping it off. I emailed them and inquired. It turned out it had been at the boutique for some time and they failed to notify me.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I can’t believe they didn’t inform you it was back at the boutique! I hope you’re enjoying it now. My bag will definitely need a clean as well as some colour retouching so let’s see!

I have sent my Vintage Kelly 28 in Vache Ardennes to the spa beginning of June 23. I’ve inherited the bag from my beloved late mother-in-law some years ago. To be honest I think the bag has never been sent to spa before.
Roughly 2 months later I got the estimate:
IMG_9805.jpeg

Estimated lead time is 25 weeks  they will replace the top handle, which is the major cost driver.

I an astonished they agreed to renew the stitching on the inside pocket because I thought they won’t do any work on the inside of the bag. Maybe because it’s vintage? Anyway, I am not complaining :D
I really hope it will be worth it but reading all your posts and seeing the images of the brilliantly repaired bags gives me hope
Hope this might be helpful for others.
