Hermes Purchase Regrets

I have similar thoughts when it comes to luxury items. In regards to the Birkin, I has acquired a nice collection from other brands and felt there was nothing really left that had my heart singing. After trying to score my first birkin and then finally getting it, I definitely felt a pang of was this worth it, all this chase and now I have it, now what!

But after a few days, I was thrilled and it is in a league of its own in terms of craftsmanship, functionality, and ease of use. So for me I think those feelings are normal and only you can decide if a bag is worth it or not to you. Good luck deciding!

I have been on and off thinking about ordering a Birkin. It would totally be possible and I’d just have to pull the trigger.
My SO has two Birkins and I like them a lot, they are well made and would fit my needs. So from an aesthetic/functionality angle it would make sense. I thought about different colors and I like fantasizing about it.

However there‘s also the price. I have dropped a lot of money on bags before (Chanel...) but something about dropping so much money on a bag is just flat out ridiculous to me. I am always very self aware buying these bags having thoughts like ‘Have I gone mad?‘ and with the Birkin I’d feel like I really would have. The others were expensive to a comically ridiculous extent but the price for a Birkin kind of crosses the line for me.

Money isn’t an issue in this case. It’s more about... should you drop this money on a bag you like although the pricing is sheer lunacy?

Can you relate to this? Have you had the same thoughts, pulled the trigger and then regretted it?

I think it comes down to a very practical question of whether or not you will use it, and for the longterm.

Agree with papertiger. Ultimately it boils down to what you love/want/use so much that you can rationalize the costs somehow (given that there are no financial worries). No one actually needs watches for several thousands, let alone millions, or supercars. Or luxury holidays, private jets and whatever else. But if you love it and have the money why not? Of course you can put those amounts into stocks/other investments etc., but whatever brings you joy is most important.

It's interesting you mentioned Chanel. I bought my first Chanel 2.55 in 2008. While I still adore the design I was disappointed the metallic colour rubbed off relatively easily and quickly. With no way to fix that (asked in the boutique). The 2.55 in the same size costs more than 3x today. Given the quality I experienced I cannot justify spending on Chanel bags at retail price, but for H I feel totally different. It's a matter of perceived value rather than absolute price.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I have a promotion coming up this year and think that I’ll maybe want to treat myself with a Birkin order but it’s still a few months away which gives me time to think it through. I will consider your advice and found it to be very helpful! :)
Congratulations on your achievement! If you love the Birkin, I hope that you will treat yourself! I’ve bought both boutique and pre loved and have not regretted my purchases. Cost per wear :D I hope you will update with an action shot so we can all toast your good fortune and hard work!

Newbie here, and been "fed" Hermès since I was little (my dad travelled a lot and bought me my first Hermès scarf (Cheval Turc) when I was 9! One thing I would say about Hermès: you can never regret a purchase, because even if for some reason you're not happy with it, it always keeps its value! So you can sell it and buy another item!

That’s simply not true for nearly any item that’s not a B/K/C brand new from the store. I doubt I’d get 1/3 what I paid for the Berline I maybe carry once a year. Or the Verrou Chaine. And even if I wanted to consign a B or K, I’d only get a percentage of the selling price.

Not to pile on a new person, but the “you can always sell it for what you paid” concept isn’t good advice. But welcome, and I love the idea of a 9 year old getting an H scarf.

My father's reasoning was that I loved horses, so I would like and treasure the scarf. I did. He would usually bring me a scarf, and a handbag for my mother...Hermès and later Gucci. And I recently realized she gave at least 3 of her Kellys (in good condition) to the cleaning lady! I was 17 then, and could not care less. *Sigh*

I'd like to second this. Firstly, selling it yourself to avoid high commission is a lot of stress and risk. Unless you have friends to buy off you, run popular instagram/youtube etc.
Secondly, it's a bit like a property market or stocks- at certain point value is so far off fundamentals, that it's no longer going to grow. Think this will happen to Chanel (poor quality, flooded second hand market, insane price, Hermes price band). Hermes - not sure, maybe. Think the myth works for those who bought these brands many years ago or have store-fresh coveted items. I lost insane amount of money selling various allegedly investment bags (didn't buy for investment, got bored or they didn't work for me).

Hm...well, I guess you know better. Then I must have been very lucky: I've been buying, wearing for a few years and then selling Hermès at the same value (sometimes) or with a nice profit (often). Not so much for business, but because I don't like to have stuff in my closet that I know I won't wear anymore.

No, I didn't mean I knew better, hope you didn't take it personally - I'm in Europe where it's very hard to sell things well (we have Vestiaire Collective, Ebay, local second hand boutiques - all taking hefty profits). I sell for the same reason as you and rather don't look back but I cringe when on my local groups where there are a lot of girls new to the luxury hear 'you won't lose a penny, it's an investment' - so it was more to them than you  I cringe when in Polish groups people rarely talk about history of Hermes, quality of leathers, tanning/colours but first line is always 'it's investment, you won't lose at resale'.

yes - and for me the additional question: is this my style? or do I buy it as a 'trophy' bag. :hrmm:both are valid TBH and these days I view my bags like an art collection. sort of... I think most of us here in the forum have more bags than we can actually use, I know I do.
