I have a question regarding sales tax. So you come from a state with no sales tax. Now since you can only purchase most of H items in store, does that mean you will have to pay sales tax according to the store's location?

Yes you pay sales tax according to the stores locations if you are physically in the store paying for the item.

In the past I've received items shipped from a state with lower income tax but I am charged sales tax based on the state rate in which I receive the items.

If you're getting something that they'll ship to you, you pay the sales tax of the destination. This really helps when shopping at the Chicago store! :smile1: They usually charge a flat (I think it's) $25 to ship, too.

Theoretically, if I purchase say a leather item, pay for it at the store, I can or used to be able to have it shipped to my residence tax free. Why? Because there is no brick and mortar store in my state. Who know if this is still the case with all the new policies.

That said if the item say is a scarf and the shipping fee would be greater than paying sales tax, I'll pay tax and take the item home.

Just an FYI- anything over $1500 costs $50 to ship.

What should I do? I live in Michigan and now I'd have to spend money to fly to a boutique to order a bag then fly back months or years later to purchase? I guess my name is changing from "lovehermes" to "hatehermes". :pout: I hate to say it, but now I think I will be getting a "bargain" shopping with a reseller by saving hotel and airline prices just to walk into a boutique.

Ask your SA how to handle this now that the new policy is in place? That is how I would handle it. I am so sorry, buying is more difficult than ever.

I am in the same circumstances as you. I don't know what I will do, but I agree, for the price of going to a boutique a reseller is now the bargin. Plus there will be no guarentee that when you go to the store that they will have what you want, as now they are not able to talk about any items over the phone...:wondering

That is crazy that they can't talk about anything over the phone. Can you still order if you go into a store? It's really not fair and sounds like they will lose a lot of business, but who knows.

I have no idea, "my store" is an 8 hour plane ride away!!:laugh:I won't know for a while...

yes, you pay the prevailing sales tax in the state where you purchase an item irrespective of whether it is Hermes or not; it used to be that you could purchase in person and have it shipped back to your home state and not pay sales tax but who knows if they will do this for a customer anymore

Some of you mention on here that the stores that rely on tourists are in trouble. I can see that but on the other hand, places like vegas where people visit, would still sell coveted bags to tourists that come to their store and drop a lot of dough right? maybe i'm wrong. i would think you would be luckier if you lived in a place with very few tourists like charlotte i would think a lot of people bought from those stores over the phone because it's easier to get the stuff they want then places like BH or NY. not as much demand. don't know. that's just my 2 cents.
