Sorry for the mixed metaphors - but I think the sad truth is that H has created a monster and now is throwing the baby out with the bath water to try to fix it.
H is wildly sought after now because of young celebs who seem to be able to get whatever they want even though there is an inventory issue. And I think that a large segment of people who want H want it only because it is an "in" thing - and because it is the most expensive "in" thing. So, once you have your birkin or kelly, you too can live the celeb life. Of course, this success model will implode when the young celebs move on to something else.
But for now, given the huge demand, resellers have rushed in. You see the same thing with the designer lines for Target and H&M. Every launch there is a feeding frenzy for goods and then they show up for sale on the bay.
So, to counteract the reseller issue, it seems like H is viewing all loyal buyers as resellers if they don't walk into a store to buy. Most of us don't have time to continually visit a store unless we live right around the corner - or unless it is our business. So, who will have time to visit stores repeatedly? Resellers and their hired shoppers. So - bye bye babies (loyal shoppers) - resellers win.
Sad - but I agree that it will be much easier to just pay the premium and buy from a reseller. Saves on gas, tolls, train/plane tickets - not to mention time which is perhaps most valuable of all. And at least, in dealing with a reseller, you are dealing with someone who just wants to provide goods to buyers without making the buyers play ridiculous games first.
One of my most hated activities is buying a car as I hate the games and negotiations. I've always thought I'd happily pay someone to go do it for me. So, in a way, paying a reseller premium is money well spent to avoid the time-consuming, demeaning games. Not what I want - but it seems to be where we are right now.
