This is a helpful perspective, thanks! I hadn't considered that she may have just been taking the bag details to secure a sale. I did feel like I was getting very genuine vibes from her, but of course, she's a salesperson, so it's possible that she was just really good at her job and is skilled at making people feel liked.

I've always been open to getting into the game, but I don't live near a store and haven't previously found an SA that I really felt like I clicked well with. NY is a quick flight and my husband and I would like to visit a handful of times per year regardless. Working with her was definitely my most pleasant and effortless feeling experience, and I know that I do want additional H bags in the future, so that's what got me thinking that starting "the game" with her could be a good move.
If you intend to "start the game" anyway and can visit a few times a year plus make remote purchases, I would definitely go for it. You already have $5k toward the relationship which is a nice start. The next few shopping trips should prove how genuine she was but it sounds like there could be hope there. Good luck!

Thanks so much! And I'll edit my original post a bit, because the way I wrote about the experience might not be portraying it super accurately. Thanks again for your help and feedback!

Hi everyone! I posted about this in the Hermes NYC thread, but thought I'd share here as well in hopes of getting some additional thoughts/feedback. I'll try to be a bit more detailed than in my last post in case that's helpful, but will also summarize at the end!

I've shopped in a few different stores before and have bought some bags online and a Picotin in a store. I've never really felt like I hit it off with the SAs I met, and since I don't live near a boutique, I didn't feel super motivated to get into "the game" and just bought my quota bags resale, then bought what I wanted/liked from H when I'd have the opportunity to.

I was visiting NY recently and popped into the Madison Ave store and tried on a few watches with a very sweet SA. My husband is a huge watch enthusiast with a lot of knowledge, and apparently she is as well. They started talking at length about watches, and it did feel like we were really hitting it off with her. The particular watch I wanted wasn't in stock, but she offered to order it for me. I was thinking about it a bit and she asked if there was anything else I'd like to look at, and I figured I ask about Birkin 30s (knowing it was an incredibly long shot). As expected, she said they didn't have any, but she didn't seem annoyed by the questiona nd rattled off pretty much every non-QB and asked if I'd be interested in those. I politely declined, and she pulled out her phone and pulled up my profile, said she could see that I'm a consistent customer but that I shop at different stores and online, and told me it would be to my advantage if I stick with just one store if I'm hoping for a bag. She then asked what I want for a bag and recorded my preferences in her phone and went through the form with me. I asked for a B30, gold hardware, and said I was pretty flexible on color, which she said is great and makes it easier.

After that, she continued chatting about watches with us and was clearly very passionate about it. She showed us men's watches and let my husband try on a bunch. I ultimately decided to order the watch through her (4k) and my husband got a belt (about 1k), and probably spent about an hour and a half with her in total. She then showed us around some other departments, gave us champagne and chocolate, and I think we may have casually met one of the managers when we were checking out.

I got very genuine vibes from her, but of course, she could just be a good salesperson. The whole experience was so pleasant and effortless that it has made me consider trying to consistently shop at one store with hopes of getting a quota bag. I'd like to visit NYC semi-regularly and it's a quick and easy flight. She said she'd love to stay in touch and let me know I can text her if there's anything I want to order between visits.

I left feeling very encouraged about the interaction, and feeling like 5k is a decent start to building a relationship/spend history there (though I recognize that there are tons of high rollers in NYC where 5k is nothing). What do you all think - does this feel like an encouraging start? Do you think she was being genuine in taking my wishlist? Or do you think that's a tactic to try and get people hooked?

TLDR Popped into Madison Ave from out of town, bought a 4k watch and 1k men's belt, spent about 1.5 hours talking with the SA, she made a quota bag wishlist for me and indicated she'd like to work together. She was super sweet and I liked her a lot and felt far more at ease than with other SAs I've encountered. Is this feeling like a good start? Any Madison Ave success stories that people would like to share?!

Glad you had a nice experience. I think this SA genuinely wanted to have you as a client. What’s important is that you enjoyed your time with her. This is a promising start.

Seems very promising. Glad you had a great experience. Despite your spend on that being relatively low (as you stated), sounds like you really clicked with her.

Buy another watch and you'll get that bag in no time.

Just browsing today with a friend, and saw some new bags on display!

Gris argent metallic

The plaid canvas shoulder Birkin- and it is quite large! Not size 29!

Mini Halzan!! The SA thought maybe size 18-20! It was really cute.
IMG_3711.jpeg

Another canvas picotin, exotic pochettes, micro picotin in lizard, and a colormatic B30
IMG_3715.jpeg

A monochrome colormatic B30 in vert moyen! I asked the SA about this bag and he said it’s the first monochrome colormatic B.

Hi everyone!

I recently moved to New York and am about to embark on my H-journey for the first time. I’m not a big spender—my budget is around $1K-$1.5K per month.

My dream bag is a B25 in Noir, and I don’t really have interest in non-quota bags. My plan is to build my pre-spend gradually by purchasing a mix of RTW (both men’s and women’s), shoes, and home items.

I know that Madison has the largest inventory, but I also understand that it’s the most competitive boutique in NYC, with many high spenders. Given my spending level, I’m worried that it might be challenging for me to receive a quota bag offer there.

That said, I’m not in a rush for a quota bag—I’d rather take my time building a relationship with an SA and work towards getting my first QB sometime this year.

Based on my situation, which NYC boutique (Madison, MP, WS, WB) do you think would be the best fit for me to start my journey?

Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance! 😊

I think that's a good plan! They are prioritizing new clients right now, so I think as long as you set your expectations that it will take awhile (maybe a year or more??) at that pace, then I don't think it's impossible to get a B25. As far as which store, I personally love shopping at Madison. It is a gorgeous store with a lot of inventory, especially if you are interested in RTW. I was just there with a friend who had never been, on a day when my SA wasn't working, so I got to see it with fresh eyes through her. I think as long as you are an easy client to work with, build a nice rapport with your SA, you will eventually get your bag. It's possible even if you are not a big spender... it just takes longer and you may get 1 quota bag a year or every 2 years, not 2 a year, but it's still possible. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your helpful insights! :) Since moving to New York, I’ve had the chance to visit both the Madison and WS boutiques once, and I was especially impressed by how stunning the Madison store is! After hearing your thoughts, I’m feeling more confident that Madison could be a great place to start my journey.

I do have one more question about Madison!

Since the store is organized by category across different floors, what’s the best approach for someone like me who is visiting for the first time and looking to build a relationship with an SA with the goal of eventually getting a B25? Should I go directly to the leather section and express my interest right away, or would it be better to start in RTW or shoes, purchase a few things, and begin the relationship that way?

Also, when I first meet an SA, should I openly share my goal (getting a B25) right away, or is it better to wait until they ask?

Since I’m new to this, I’d really appreciate any advice you can share! Thanks in advance! 😊

I don't have any information about NY. To be honest, I was so intimidated by the impossibility of being offered a bag in the State that… I didn’t even try to enter the store. LOL. However, I wanted to give an example from Paris, where the world's biggest Hermes competition takes place.

Of course, besides those who spend big and have quick access to a bag… those who spend consistently and steadily, as well as those who communicate honestly, also have access to a bag.

I believe that with your sincerity and stability, you can build a healthy relationship with the SA. Will your first bag be a Birkin? That, of course, I cannot know. But it will definitely be the beginning of the journey.

I would start in your department of interest and see if you like working with an SA; then buy a few things; then see. If the topic of bags comes up, it’s fine to express an interest re something that you would want down the road. Have fun, relax, and enjoy

yes I agree with @880. Start with your department of interest since all the SAs can offer bags, not just leather SAs. And I would start with something small and see how you jive with a particular SA. You don't have to stick with the first person you work with if you don't connect with them, because a big part of this whole "journey" is the person to person relationship. It will be more enjoyable to shop (and spend lots of money) with someone you actually enjoy working with and someone who is responsive etc.

Also, I would not open with "hey I really want a Birkin 25, how do I do that." They will ask. I have had SAs ask me on the first visit if I have a bag wishlist and what I am interested in, so don't worry, they will ask. :)
