Sorry let me clarify, before the purchase of a few items on Boxing Day, I only came in to pick up an online order at the store. My first time shopping at the Madison store was on Boxing Day. And today when I got the bag was my second time shopping there. Since I don’t have an extensive purchase history here, I was only offered the tricolor Kelly in probably not the most popular colors. But I’m not complaining!
Definitely would appreciate more information here. You are saying that you purchased nothing in store and simply went to pick up an online order and they just offered you a bag? Unpopular colors or no, this would be an amazing/strange development, so TPFers appreciate you sharing as much of your experience as possible (including colors/specs, price of bag etc.).

No, I purchased a few items on Boxing Day and there was no leather in stock that day. Then, I came back after New Years and I asked for a b or k in 25 size. My sa immediately shook his head saying there are no 25s. So I asked for a constance if there aren’t any b or k. He surprised me by taking out a k25. However I did see someone else get a b25 in a gorgeous grey.. I guess my pre spend wasn’t enough. In hindsight, I should have spent more before asking for the bag but then again, that wouldn’t have guaranteed a b or a better k.

Does anyone have any experience alternating between Madison and Meatpacking, and is that a bad idea? I might have effed up…

For the last few years, I’ve been shopping on Madison. Got offered a B and K in 2020, kept in touch with my SA, and continued to shop with him a bit to maintain the relationship. Recently, he’s become very snobby towards me (“forgetting” when we have appointments which I confirmed the day before, constantly saying the store has no stock, and very bad at communicating with me). It’s gotten to the point where I’ve wondered if he’s actively trying to loose me as a client. Recently, he texted me that he “might” have a K for me but he couldn’t hold it until the next day (I was traveling) and so I couldn’t get it. That kind of pissed me off because it felt like I was being played. He’s been an SA for decades so maybe he has more important clients? But then again, i always thought his seniority would give him the clout to get me what I want.

Last week, I walk into the MP store since I happen to live around the corner. I’m greeted with such kindness and I’m taking to a super nice SA. I explain that I normally shop with my SA on Madison, but I’ve been having trouble there lately getting bags. The SA looks up my account and was surprised to hear that I haven’t gotten a bag offer in the last year. I ask if I can request a bag from the MP store, and the the SA says of course, as long as I want to shop with him instead of shopping with my Madison SA. At that point I say, “ok sure” because I thought why not try at both stores? The new SA noted my request on his iPhone right in front of me (something my Madison SA would never do). He seemed excited to be taking down my request, which is the opposite of my Madison SA’s attitude.

Now I’m wondering if I completely sabotaged myself. Is my Madison SA going to find out I asked for a birkin in MP? Did I set myself back by asking a completely new SA for a B? I’m scared I ruined my existing relationship and now have to start all over. Eek…

I feel like I might have made a mistake, but then again, why wouldn’t a consumer be able to shop at multiple stores?? in my defense, I was told that different stores have different inventories.

If your goal was to continue your relationship with Madison then yes, unfortunately I think you made a mistake. Your Madison store will absolutely see those notes on your account and wonder why you were/are going to give business to a competing store. It sounds like things were already fragile with your Madison SA and imo this has a good chance to have broken them completely. That being said, it sounds like Madison wasn’t doing much for you anyway so not much has been lost. Yes, you’ll have to rebuild your profile from basically scratch to compete at MP but at least you’ll (theoretically) be working toward something rather than spending continually for nothing. To your last point, consumers absolutely can shop at multiples stores, no one is going to jump out and stop you, but that doesn’t mean it will help you get what you want.

Based on your post, your relationship with the Madison SA isn’t a great and hasn’t been working. While the new SA at MP was kind and happy to help you. For me that’s an easy problem to solve.
P.S. A little over a year ago I was a client at Madison too in a similar situation you are in. I found myself a sweet and kind SA elsewhere and never looked back.

It's this stuff that really irks me. We are trying to buy expensive stuff. Why should we also be mastermind psychologists? It's like dealing with toddlers. Why can't H salespeople play nicely together?

I agree. Sweet and kind (and HONEST!) go a long way.

Just wondering, how do you think my Madison SA would find out? He’s a busy guy with lots of clients. Do we really think he has nothing better to do but to look up my profile and read the notes?

Also, are you sure I’d be penalized for shopping at another store? Kinda crazy to believe in this day and age when people travel a lot and live in multiple cities. Are we saying that everyone sticks to one store? Maybe I’m being naive.

My Madison SA told me many times if I see something online I like that I should grab it because the Madison inventory is so low. So he’s ok with me shopping online for better inventory but not at another store? Ugh it’s just so confusing to me! :(

I’m no H veteran like @acrowcounted but the bolded is literally the implied theme throughout the whole H forum; aside from shopping in Paris.

Your SA can easily find out if/when they go to offer you something or if you shop with both and he goes to pull up your profile before checkout. It’s not that difficult and doesn’t require just sitting around reading client profiles.

Because their end motivation is to succeed at their job, meet their sales goals, and earn commission and bonuses to put food on the table. Sure, having happy fulfilled customers is a nice extra feel good bonus but at the expense of my paycheck when I’m working a high stress job? Probably not.

You are fine. Don't overthink it. You haven't gotten anything from your Madison SA and you enjoyed your time at MP.

Personally I pick up things here and there in the NY stores. If it's anything big I will text my Madison SA for it, but they don't freak out if I shop elsewhere IN NYC.

You can read every page of every thread on this forum and still see that every experience is different. Trying to replicate someone else's experience is impossible, there is no map, and no one can give you any absolutes. We have people here who've dropped over half a million dollars in a year at Madison and can't get the bag they want. We have people who walked in and got a dream bag. The last person I know to get a Birkin/Kelly at Madison (recent) had spent exactly not one penny there in the past year.

I would continue your relationship with both SAs (just because you said you'd shop with xx at MP doesn't mean you have to stop speaking to xx at Madison - THIS IS NOT A ROMANCE LOL) and be normal. You're the customer. All this twisting and turning to understand what SAs are thinking is just a waste of energy IMO. Be yourself, enjoy shopping ( it's supposed to be FUN), buy things you like.

So how this plays out is that my Madison SA eventually offers me a bag, goes to check me out, and at that point sees that I spoke to someone else (which could have been months or years ago) and then would rescind the bag offer while I’m hypothetically buying it? Just seems so far fetched. If I’m on vacation in Courchevel or St. Barts am I not allowed to walk into those stores anymore?

At this point I have three "home" stores and another I'd call a familiar old friend, across four cities and three countries. Hasn't seemed to hurt.

This is so reassuring and exactly what I needed to hear :)
