JMO, it’s hard to recommend a specific SA. All SAs are different and it’s all depends how you will connect with h/she. All of TPFers have different experience with their own SAs. Some of TPFers might have the same SA but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you will get the same experience or vice versa.

It took me couple of trips, tried and errors before I’ve found my current SA. So I would say, go in store.. buy something small and see if you can click with the SA. All the vibes you can feel right then and there. If h/she isn’t the right one for you. Then switch.

It’s hard at the beginning and you might feel discouraged but also keep in mind that SAs right now are super overwhelmed with their current and new clients and stocks are really low. Be patient is key. Good luck!

yes to this!
I am new ish to Hermés and had felt similarly discouraged. In Feb, I asked about a piece I'd been looking for at Madison and the SA was nice and said they didn't have it, but would likely get more of it - he gave me his card, asked me to text him proactively, and took my info on a yellow post it- which he proceeded to stick on the inside of a cabinet filled with yellow post its.

I went downtown to MP on a whim, waited in line w/out an appt, and got assigned my now-current SA. I immediately liked her energy, she offered to do a countrywide search for this item and got the last one in the US for me transferred from Chicago. Not knocking the first SA at all as I had no history and he was lovely, but just sharing as I could truly tell the difference in vibe with the second SA.

When you know, you know!

Oh congrats! I’m glad you’ve found the right SA who you can connect with!

Wow that sounds interesting. I’ll be honest, back when I visited Madison a few years ago, I didn’t have the best experience. No one greeted me when I first went into the boutique. I was browsing for like 5 mins (or maybe 10) before someone greeted me. And literally there were SAs standing in a corner with only a few customers. That honestly didn’t give me a very nice first impression. I went to Wall Street and made a purchase but the make SA didn’t seem very energized as well.

Hopefully the atmosphere will be different this time.

From reading the thread, MP has a friendlier reputation than Madison (I make appts with my SA but don’t really go to Madison when he is not around). Unlike most H members who shop both, I find chanel 57 much more welcoming and laid back than H, and dior and brunello friendliest of all.

I could be wrong, but I think the SAs are just letting you shop around without putting any pressure on you. If you want help, ask for it. Someone will be glad to assist you.

Same experience with Madison store. They’re usually quite swamped. So back before Covid when appointments weren’t more of a thing. They often handle their own customers and will help when asked and/or get someone to help next. But I do find MP more fun and laid back - totally different vibe! Hope it helps!

I also greet the door guard and the SAs I see as I walk through the store. Very friendly atmosphere.

Agree with above

(I’m pasting part of my post below that I erroneously put into maintaining an H relationship thread; apologies to mods)

I also agree with @lulilu that the SAs wait to allow you to browse and let you approach them. At madison, they are relatively reticent. you may be the client of another SA Or what, some SAs at Hermes, chanel and brunello call museum clients. Those just want to browse and don’t need or want help. How an SA approaches a prospective client or museum client can be in part the culture of that store. I do greet at the door (no SA ever wants door duty), and then I go find my SA.

It’s my own observation that the contact varies by department. On the first floor, and seocnd floor jewelry, or for any item in a glass vitrine, the SAs wait to be approached. On the second floor RTW, the SAs will approach you. On the third floor, you say hi at the cashier and ask for help if the SAs are in the back. ive never had luck in shoes if my SA isn’t there; it’s like flagging down a taxi at rush hour. (Of course, when you have an SA, they just go around thr store with you)

the one time I visited MP, during Covid, they said, you can come in, but there is no SA free to help you as you didn’t make an appt. (I said no worries, my home store is Madison and I just wanted to see what MP looks like. So literally no one spoke to us at all lol.

at dior, the bouncer and the SAs at the door tell me oh my SA is in the back, downstairs, or by the jewelry; let me text him for you. at brunello, the doorman says hello And he thinks my SA is by the bar (store center) or on the mens side. He leaves the door and gets my SA personally. at chanel, the bouncer (once he got to know me) would say SA called him and she says to meet her on 3.

i think it’s part of the individual stores rhythm and nothing to take personally

I had to chuckle at this because I’ve never been to the NY Dior flagship and its sounds like a nightclub with this description. Now to keep it on topic…if we are comparing H stores to other types of dining and entertainment establishments…

Madison is Eataly
MP is a cute café inside of The Strand Bookstore.
What’s Wall?

Did I get these right? What would you all say?

I love the term "museum client" that's been used here by @880 - it so perfectly describes the situation with the looky-loos. I think it also depends on what time and what day you go to Madison (Full disclosure - I live near Boston, but most of my shopping is done in NYC so this feels like my home store even though I've also shopped at Wall St. Also, it should be noted, I haven't set foot in an Hermès in NYC is over three years, thank you very much Covid.). On a Friday at 11 am when it was not particularly busy, I went to the scarf department and the SA who showed me the items I asked for then proceeded to take me to every floor where I wanted to shop and got me those items as well. If she didn't know where something was, she asked another SA from that department to locate it for her. I bought scarves and scarf rings, small leather goods, desk accessories, fragrances, fashion jewelry, and even had a visit to the workshop for a question about my Picotin TGM. I had the most delightful experience, and everyone I encountered was friendly and helpful. Of course, it might have helped that I shopped across many departments, was also carrying my 24/24 29, wearing a plissé scarf, and had on my Cape Cod double tour watch, and exhibited a thorough knowledge of and passion for the brand; during an elevator ride several other SAs in the car with us mentioned that I looked like a perfect walking advertisement for Hermès... :coolio:

While I was waiting for my SA to find the color choices I requested for a Calvi card holder, I observed a woman having a pleading discussion with an SA in the leather bags area. She was explaining how an important birthday was coming up for her and she wanted a special bag, and the SA was describing how the "system" works and that it was a matter of what stock was available, the discretionary nature of the regular client/SA relationship, and other subjective factors that go into who gets an offer. She then proceeded to try the "formula" approach of asking the SA to help her in the purchase of several gifts for friends who were going to also have milestone birthdays, and asked what kind of gifts she should get for them. But she exhibited no knowledge of what items might make suitable purchases, only that they shouldn't be too extravagant. The SA recommended scarves, small leather goods, fashion jewelry, etc., but reiterated that an offer would still be dependent on a variety of other factors, and would not necessarily be linked to these purchases. It was almost as if this were the alternate scene written for the "Sex and the City" episode where Samantha is trying her best to get that red Birkin...

Bottom line - your own attitude, passion for H, and demonstrated knowledge of the brand play a big part in your shopping experience. But luck is also a huge factor. The following day (Saturday mid-day), I went into Madison with a friend and it was quite busy. We wandered around for a bit on every floor in "museum" mode, and then we went to the handbag department. There weren't a lot of bags on display, but I noticed a 24/24 35 I hadn't seen the day before, in a color/material combination I had never seen before, and trust me, I've seen plenty. I remarked upon it to my friend, we looked at it from various angles, and our excitement must have drawn the attention of another shopper, who seemed quite keen on it as well, although we quickly realized he was looking at a picture of the Herbag on his phone, and must have been confused about what this was. :P

I was then approached by a very nice SA who offered to take the bag out for me to look at and try on.

After more photos and modeling (and about thirty seconds of deliberation ), I said I would like to take the bag if it was available for purchase. The SA then disappeared for several minutes and eventually returned with a big box. He opened it to show me and offer me this incredible 24/24 35 in Viking Toile with leather trim in Cassis Swift.

I had not encountered this SA on Friday, and my purchase history was not a factor. But also, I don't think this bag is as highly-coveted as many others, and you can probably walk into many boutiques and simply purchase a 29/29 off the shelf if they have the stock.

I opted to ship this purchase to my home rather than carry a huge bag around the city all day. Because I live in MA, I saved about $400 on the taxes.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. :flowers:

To me Wall St. feels like Bauman's Rare Book Shop on Madison mid-town.

I love your 24/24 and I adore toile :)

in 2008 or 2010, Wall St was like the tv show cheers ; things have changed lol

Re your witnessing the lady with the special birthday, that makes me tired. I’m sure every SA has to deal with that all the time.
Ugh.

Thank you so much, I'm in love with it. It feels perfect for spring. As a matter of fact, FedEx just delivered the bag and I'm having a grand time looking for the right @MaiTai insert from my collection and swapping over items from my other 29/29.

I definitely did not get the "Cheers" vibe from Wall St. last time I was there, but of course YMMV. :P

And vis à vis the "special birthday" scenario, it feels so tired at this point. I'll bet she also has a sob story for when she gets pulled over for speeding... :hrmm:

Anyway, I cannot speak for anyone else here, but every single experience I have ever had in the Madison location has been extremely enjoyable and satisfying.

I would put in a plug for Hermes RTW, but looking at your action pic, are you a brunello cuchinelli RTW person? Bc the brunello next door is equally friendly and amazing. Though it’s oddlydecorated like Prada circa 1996, it has a nicer rest room than Hermes and refreshments and normal couches.
