I am teetering on the edge of getting my first pair of Chypres! Are these a must have for a Hermes lover? I have tan colored skin and am thinking the black leather. I tried white leather yesterday and it was pretty stark on me. Opinions welcomed!

For other shoes I'm normally a size UK 9.5 and I was advised by my SA to go half a size up. When I went to try on a few pairs a few months ago, it was very difficult for me to push my feet in for both 10 and 10.5 where it was tight sideways but it still looked like my feet could not go all the way. Has anyone had this issue before? I'm just wondering if it has something to do with the leather since all the pairs I have tried on were all Epsom leather and not because my wide feet.

Hi there, I want to buy my first Chypres and I'm looking at the Étoupe in epsom. Are they reeeeally true to size now? Should I size up with Epsom? Also what makes Espom so uncomformable? Where do they rub? I'm a true size 37 in length, but sometimes have to size up for extra width due to bunions (ex ballet dancer). I don't have any other Hermes shoes. Please help!

Personally I find that the leather (regular calfskin and epsom) and suede chypres are true to size. Usually I wear 39.5 for loafers, sneakers, dress shoes or 40 for boots and chunkier footwear. The chypre is a sandal that is open back, since there was no back strap like the Genius sandal. I oringally tried the Men's chypre but found them to be too wide, thus my SA suggested Women's chypre as the only difference is the width. I found that the Women's chypre fit my feet a lot better as I have narrower feet than the average guy. Considering that the sandal was open toe and open back, I didn't want it to fly off when walking, so I went with a 39 actually, but could have done a 39.5. After breaking them in, the 39 feels very nice, comfy, and secure without socks. The 39.5 might've been a tad bit loose if I went with that and broke them in and loosen up. It might be best to size up a half size for your bunions, but best thing would be to try them in person and see the differences between sizes.

Epsom leather is known to be a very stiff/rigid and durable leather, thus why it is often used in Sellier structured bags and other products. When epsom is used in shoes, I find that it's very stiff and really hard to wear, especially considering that Chypre's are sandals and most wear them bare foot. I've heard people with epsom chypres say that it is really uncomfortable and hurts around the velcro strap the most, mostly because of this rigid leather rubbing against their skin. Another place that it seems to irritate the skin is above the pinky toe, where the H cut out is. Hope this helps :)

Thank you! This is really helpful. Epsom doesn't seem such a good idea and I really needed something to put me off! I will go with calf instead!
Unfortunately I'm nowhere near a boutique, so trying on different sizes is not an option unfortunately. How are they with returns on the Hermes website?

Yes! For the love of God don't go for the Epsom ones! Mine are, and they bled me raw for the longest time, until I got corn pads to stick on the underside of the straps to stop it from happening.

No problem! Always glad to help others in the H community :)

Yes, the regular calfskin will be much easier to break in and no blood, sweat, and tears involved. You can even break them in with socks on, around the house for a few weeks, then use them bare foot outside. That's what I did since I got mine last December in the middle of winter, perfect make shift house slipper. The socks will really make it comfy to break in since it won't rub against your skin.

I have no clue about H online returns. I've never tried to return anything at H or H online. Perhaps you can call the online number and see if someone can tell you the return/exchange policies?

Please keep us updated on which chypres and size you pick! Good luck :)

Yikes!!! I see that's probably the reason why you got your calfskin genius sandals?
Not really. Once they broke in, they were fine, but it was traumatic having to deal with the pain for quite a while before they did.

I still continue to use my Chypres regularly. It's just that I fell in love with the Genius sandals when they came out because I think it's a nicer look with the back strap. It's also a more comfortable wear as I don't have to worry about slippage.

However, it was a lesson learnt in terms of leather, so I was glad that the Geniuses were in calfskin rather than Epsom. I wouldn't have got them if they only came in Epsom.

Oh okay, glad you are able to use your chypre in epsom now, after the brutal brake in! It would've been a shame if they still hurt and you weren't able to wear them because of pain
