There was a wonderful lady who shared her story of getting an Hermès SO bag in Belgium without the usual requisite ‘playing the game’—I believe it arrived on her birthday, too, and it was gorgeous—she had the bag made to match a scarf she loved, IIRC.
I think about that post a lot. I’ve tried to search for it to no avail.
Whilst in grad school, I used to work part-time in a jewelry boutique which was an AD for a watch brand which most people associate with ‘the’ luxury watch (I’m a VC / JLC girl myself but I respect this brand ofc). There were pushy clients, demanding ones, pandering ones, people who were outright rude when we didn’t have an item in stock and couldn’t physically obtain it in their stipulated time frame. And don’t get me started on discrimination & ugly, vile, horrid remarks.
Sometimes the best strategy is to remember that the SA is human, just like you, & treat them with respect and kindness, just as you would anyone. TPF members seem to grasp this; unfortunately, some clients seem to think SAs are a species apart—I’ve witnessed this as a customer, too.
If your SA is tetchy or terse? Maybe they just got yelled at or threatened by a bad apple. Maybe they’re having a bad day. There’s a limit, naturally, and if they’re downright rude or discriminatory, this is not on. Ever.
I think about this post often, as I had the sense that she was offered an SO dream bag because she was kind, polite, and respectful. Wherever she is now, I hope she’s carrying her bag and loves it still for the memories, craftsmanship and care that went into it. I’d bet red & my lucky number, all in, on roulette (…at which I am legendarily Not to be trusted 😂) that she does, and that the SAs that day had a blast assisting her!
