I’m reasonably competitive but I think I’m more inclined to research, analyze and problem solve. I like to get the job done :search:
I’m the same.

I also agree with everyone about the vintage and mature beauties that can be found on the secondary market. Some of the leathers are just stunning and the workmanship is wonderful. Classic, timeless bags.

I just read a few pages of that Paris thread to see what I missed and :wtf:

Serious shout out to @880, @acrowcounted, @QuelleFromage, @momoc, @periogirl28 and others for their tireless efforts to help guide those tPF members new to the Hermes world understand some of the idiosyncrasies that accompany the H shopping experience, especially post Covid.

I can understand the frustration of being unable to obtain something that you really want. Earlier in my Paris travels I signed up for an appointment and I didn’t get one either. The disappointment is real. But but even as I type those words I remind myself of lessons I learned at an early age (cue the music….) ‘you can’t always get what you want’. And my grandmother said it long before Mick (out with a new album, yikes!). It’s just not fair to take out your frustration on those who are trying to help you (or on the great City of Light). I do agree that the SAs at the concierge desks have a difficult job at times but there’s no reason to be dismissive of a client who is respectful.

@880 and I are in complete agreement on the subject of resellers. You have to do the research, and no, it’s not easy, but there are lovely bags available in the secondary market if you’re willing to look. Or not.

ETA: and thanks @Veritybelle, I love a good lead :flowers:

Awwww thank you so much :hugs:

I’m actually really new compared to the true OGs (as you can tell I don’t have that title on the forum!) and I’ve learned so, so much here. I hope this stays forever a helpful and valuable place for any new and experienced H lovers. I have noticed sometimes the more knowledgeable folks becoming a little more reticent (which like, completely, 1000% understand why) and I deeply admire the patience and generosity of everyone else you listed, plus so many others (including the folks here in this thread)! Forever grateful I found this forum. :hbeat:

Also, I actually can be quite sarcastic and snarky…many times I start drafts that I keep deleting and rewording and deleting…and finally giving up, then refresh the thread and one of the other members have put in a reply that is worded way better than what I could have said. It’s also why you see me furiously editing my posts sometimes (that and my typos LOL).

You should hear what goes on in my head

So many drafts deleted, reworded…and yes I too give up because there is almost certainly another member who is more experienced (in a good way ;)) and more eloquent!

I regularly peace out of the Paris thread only because there’s no new news. The lottery is exactly that - a lottery. VIPs are their own entities. The advice remains the same over the hundreds of pages regardless of the gaps in time. And there’s sometimes success and a lot of time, empty hands. And as far as inventory - we know the deal on that. So it’s mostly an anxiety and/or venting thread and I try to steer clear of anything that makes my own anxious brain worse lol. I stopped watching it long ago, and then the lottery went into effect so I peeked to get the hang of how that was going, and any time since when I’ve thought, I wonder what’s going on in that thread, I figure out it’s the same darn thing as nine months ago and close it lol.

I really am truly enjoying the threads that involve styling of the bags with clothes, H in action, etc. I just want to enjoy that. It’s what drew me to IG actually and I’m not touching the influencer thread other than to say I miss IG before the influencing. I totally understand the effort and desire to monetize the hard work that goes in but I miss seeing styling and fashion fun that wasn’t so caught up on how to draw a crowd and get sponsored. I regularly clean out who I’m following and find new folks and now I’m bummed bc a few young awesome people are now getting sponsored and THEIR content is driven by that, and they’re writing books (is everyone writing a book now?) and I am genuinely thrilled for them!! But so bored for me lol. Bc now depending on how unrelenting the promotion of those items and sponsorships become I will prob unfollow and find some new content. Normal cycle - I’m feeling old lol.

The travel thread sounds excellent. I honestly should get myself out of the brand specific stuff and venture out more. But Bal research is what made me an OG and that level of intrigue about the bags and styling is where my heart has stayed for the most part.

I wonder too if it’s a personality thing. I by nature am not super competitive. I actually shy away from it and it turns me off. So maybe those that get caught up in the h game or Paris game are more competitive by nature? So for me if a bag is not readily available at the boutique I just find it on the secondary market or just move on. I also try to live by the what will be will be mentality. I try not to sweat it and I find that things always seem to work out. Usually for the better! Just my 2 cents
I think it’s a mental health and maturity thing. Covid has made things worse with how people behave. I also think those who get caught up in the game are younger. I see so many twenty somethings on sm after these bags and it blows my mind. Of course I’m sure there are some young financially responsible people.

Emotionally mature people don’t fall victim to games. They don’t buy only what the sa tells them to buy. They don’t waste money. They don’t start questioning if they did something wrong if their sa doesn’t respond the same day or next day or even week. They don’t attempt to make an appointment hundreds of times in Paris. When I saw some mention that I kind of found it shocking.

Being so focused on obtaining a bag is not healthy and I’ve seen so many people be so disappointed that they didn’t get one or spent so much and still haven’t been offered one or took home a bag they didn’t like. Who’s the client here? Who’s spending the money? Ultimately most everyone gets bags but after that then what and so what? These people who have these strong fixations may continue to shop as they do and I see it over and over in these fb reseller groups. Those people who buy the high end jewelry and sell it for peanuts or sell twenty pairs of chypre sandals. After three years of doing that aren’t they tired? It’s like an addiction and I supposed if they weren’t addicted to H they’d have some other kind of addiction.

These bags used to be what you’d buy for milestones like 25th anniversary, fortieth birthday, work milestone, but now it’s like let’s celebrate anything as a reason to get a bag and heck who needs a reason. Maybe it’s good that the bk have come off the pedestal.

I completely agree with all of this. Very well said!

This is a really good point.

I'm also bewildered by the twin trends of "omg let me shop shop shop shop but it must be brand new from the store and the SA must kiss my butt all the way through the process" .....with the supposed focus on sustainability.
Nothing is more sustainable than a used leather bag. It will last longer than any of the current vegan leather alternatives and it's already made its footprint.

Nailed it. I love the idea of continuing the life cycle of things, and have always thought of Hermes as one of the OGs in that space. I don’t shop fast fashion as a personal choice.

I like Amore Vintage Japan and have bought a couple of items from them (very happy with my purchases and with my dealings with the team). I also look at Vintage Qoo, but have not purchased from them (yet… ). Both have bricks and mortar stores as well. Brand JFA often has interesting pieces but they also sell on eBay so you need to check pieces are actually available before pulling the trigger there as the site may not always be up-to-date. Happy hunting!

Thank you so much!

so many people use this word to virtue signal but really have zero concept of what sustainability is.

A friend said she wanted to get an electric vehicle bc it’s more environmentally friendly. Meanwhile she changes cars every 3 years. It would be way more sustainable to have just kept using the one car
