Gorgeous.........
It is gorgeous. Truly a work of art. But would you be nervous to use this bag?? I feel like with leather, you can spa it if it gets banged up... what do they do with WOOD?? Is it meant just for display??

Lol I haven't gone that far in my fantasy. I can see that being just a display piece for a collector.... It probably doesnt hold much and is really heavy anyways...But beautiful none the less...

The results for this auction were pretty interesting. Quite a few "desirable" bags (by which I mean the bags that everyone's trying to get from boutique, like Kelly 25 and Birkin 25) went for less than the big resellers would ask, even after premium. Even this Kellywood didn't go as high as Christies predicted.

What did go high (and I am doing this from memory so forgive me if I missed) - most of the diamond bags, the Cargo bags, the Desordres, the Kelly Lakis, the Kelly bag charm (?!). As has been the case for a while, the B35s were absolute bargains IMO. But let's just say, LOTS of bags under $20K before tax which is usually about where resellers start their pricing.

I feel like resale is softening, and softening fast.

Looking at the results of the auction now... if it doesn't list the Price Realised, does it mean the item did not sell?

@QuelleFromage Since the auction house charges a premium in addition to the hammer price, do you know if the auction amount is what the seller actually takes home or do they need to pay the auction house as well?
I've never auctioned a bag (I don't think) but have auctioned art, and yes, the seller pays a fee. Usually there's a nominal fee upfront to photograph and list the lot and insure it while the house has it (like $100-$500 depending) and a 10%-ish commission. (If you are selling your Basquiat (or your diamond Himalaya) I am sure that percentage goes down, in fact, I know that if you have a real rarity or high profile work, the houses will not just waive your fees but fight for it and give incentives.) And of course there is always the 20-30% premium on top of that. ;) It is a racket!!

Usually yes. Looks like several lots were "bought in". This often means the seller had a minimum "reserve" price, below which they would not sell, and bidding did not meet that.
It's common to offer lots post-sale if they don't sell at auction. I just recently bought a bag this way - the auction house called and offered me a lower price than the reserve. If there's anything that did not sell at Christies that someone is interested in, it is worth calling and asking

Edited to make it more clear :)

TFBS putting NYT on blast.
I saw this....don't want to get too deep but it is a bit over-dramatic. I am very anti-fakes of course - BUT I don't think they are any more responsible for awful labor practices than, say, Shein*, or honestly Nike et al., and as for funding terrorism...again, that has less to do with counterfeiting bags and more to do with any factory or industry that operates in the shadows.

*And look, TFBS literally just now went after Shein.

Did anyone see what the winning bids were for Ellen Barkin’s bags? I wanted one of the box calf birkins in either navy or green but couldn’t find my passport to upload. Just found it now and the auction is over.

Agreed- the Lakis was sitting at 17, then 19K for a while, through yesterday, and then obviously added a bit more today at auction. Most of the ones that went over or way over estimate did exactly that.

And yes- "bargains" ( quite a relative term, but still) in larger bags ( yeah!) There was a gorgeous K32 in VF Porosus that went at estimate, in addition to some others. I'd need to double check as well, but it seems to me that the exotics did not hold as well as previously ( except the perennial Himalayan), maybe even more so in Ks

Color and leather always factor into it as well- although many people don't like to admit that.

What is everyone’s take on that Kelly charm that went for over $11,000! (Actually more if you add on the fees!)

You actually may still be able to find some Cassis from 2022 in stores. It was available last year in Togo and Clemence for retourne and Veau Madame for sellier. But, as others have said, it may be easier to find this bag on the pre-loved market. Unfortunately, true purples are some of the least frequently stocked shades for bags at Hermès.
None in my store. My sa knows I’m crazy for this color. I know it was a new color for 2022, does that mean they aren’t making it this year?

Cassis was not new in 2022, it was just a holdover colour from the previous few seasons. In actuality, that colour is over a decade old. I have seen some 2023 Cassis bags this year, but most have been dated for 2022 or earlier. Availability will depend on what your store has ordered— which is mostly at the discretion of your SM and Paris.

Veering OT slightly: As I mentioned in my earlier post, for reasons unknown to me, Hermès has never produced a large amount of purple bags (bar mauve bags). The two major exceptions were Raisin and Anémone. Cassis has not been as lucky, unfortunately.
