Hey NiceHubby, BH typically puts out their birkins mid to late afternoon, say around 3-4pm. I've been there maybe eight times since march 2010 and have seen them put out a black birkin twice out of the eight. The problem for you is that the moment they put any regular leather birkin out, it gets bought almost instantaneously so like what previous posters said, unless you're lucky and happen to be there when they put one out, your best bet is to build a relationship with an SA. My experience at BH and at other Hermes stores is depending how much you buy, they may even call you as soon as two weeks later to let you know a particular birkin is available, especially a black one that's so common. If you can afford it I highly suggest a reseller from Japan, like Lecrin. http://www.lecrin.jp/e-index.html it might be a little more expensive but you don't have to wait or compromise in terms of colors etc.
So, let me get this straight.... By building a relationship with the SA they might alert me that one is coming in or they might hold one for me? Is that how it works? I'm not really planning on buying anything other than the Birkin.

That can happen and sometimes does NiceHubby. Not so complicated, but it does help to meet the sales staff in person. You will learn a great deal about Hermes in your quest to find the perfect Birkin for your wife! I think you can already see that you will have a wonderful cheering section when you do find it.
I have to tell you -from my personal experience, if you're only planning on buying a Birkin, they probably won't sell it to you. I've heard of people being lucky and getting their hands on a Birkin without having any relationship with a SA but I think you have to patronize the store and buy other things and show you love Hermes 'the brand' and other products...not just the Birkin or Kelly. Why not buy yourself or your wife some accessories? Like a few ties for yourself or some scarves or small leather goods? If you have zero history of buying anything else, I think your odds of getting a Birkin run pretty low. Good luck!
i have seen men approach SA's in Hermes --who have been coming in for weeks. "checking in". SA says they are put out randomly--blah blah. Very few are going to sell a coveted bag to someone without other purchases. The Sa's dont get any commission on the birkins or kellys. quite frankly i dont blame them
Well that is not great news... particularly since I have been checking in for over a month. I have had two stylists who purchase thousands of dollars of Hermes items stop in on my behalf. My wife has plenty of Hermes items, I guess it just makes it impossible for someone who wants to surprise a Hermes lover. I do find this whole experience incredibly frustrating. It shouldn't be so hard to spend $10,000 for someone you love! I have to say in a month of checking in I have seen little or no viable bags. *sigh*
With this kind of track record at H, don't you or the stylists have an SA to work with?
If your wife has lots of H stuff why don't you try to (discreetly) find out where she shops and who her SA is. Introduce yourself as her husband to the SA and explain that you'd like to get your wife a birkin for her 40th...
I am working with one of the Stylists SA's he is super nice, Michael in BH. I am in the film business and several people have inquired on my behalf. I can't seem to get any traction though.
