Have You Ever Returned A Used Bag?

A while back, I returned a bag that I kept a little over 30 days (which I thought was the store return policy...apparently not); however, I hadn't used it--it was still tagged and in its dustbag. I brought it back with the receipt, thinking maybe I could get a store credit, but the clerk went ahead and credited my cc.

Interesting. I don't see a used bag as used clothing. :thinkin:

Returning a used bag purchased two years ago wouldn't even cross my mind. It's inconceivable. And I can't understand why Nordstrom would take it back. :wtf:

TBH, I can't relate to such a strong reaction. To me, a used bag is a used bag. Dirty underwear is foul, kwim?

In this case, I think Bloomies is more of a byotch than the person returning the bag. For whatever reason (that's another thread...), sometimes some people try to get away with this kind of thing, and IMO it's up to the retailers to protect other customers by not accepting returns of used or damaged bags and, if they accept them, by not putting them back on shelves at new-bag prices.

While I wouldn't want to pay new-bag price for a used bag, I can accept that others wouldn't mind if the bags are in like-new shape. To each his own.

It does and has happened.

Whether it's a bag or any other item, to use it and return is unethical and completely unfair. Why should anyone pay full price for a used item? Why should customers be allowed to take home an item, use it for a while and then return it?

Something is either new and unused or it's not. If it's been used, it's not ethical to expect a full refund and it's not ethical to sell it as new.

Gosh, I could have used an extra electric frying pan or two to make latkes. Perhaps I should have "bought" a couple, used them for my purposes and then returned them.

I could see a way to save a whole bunch of money. I'll just "buy" the things I need, use them for a while, and then return them and get my money back!

If I were a business owner, I would not be happy knowing that people think this is an acceptable practice.

I have. After carrying it twice, decided it was too heavy for me...hurts me back urgg. And a shoulder bag that would just fall on my shoulder...not comfortable. I have made a lot of returns not just purses but abuse the item and return it with reasonable time.

I agree that if something is wrong with the bag then back it goes. I generally buy my bags at Nordies because they have a great return policy. But I have been able to score an awesome deal on a MJ clutch because it was a customer return. :D

I never believed the posts on here about people who use their bags without clipping the price tags off.
But that changed when I recently got a bag from Ebay. NWT. It was absolutely pristine inside and out, but to my surprise...
Seller left their makeup bag in it. :wtf:
It is not a very small makeup bag, either.

Frankly, I was disappointed...but I did not do anything about it because the bag was fine. I did not give her any stars, however.

Definitely if it was defective, but I think it's okay to return it after a couple of wears if you just change your mind and it still looks brand new. To me, a bag can be really great looking, but as soon as you actually wear it out the door some wearability/comfort issues can pop up, and I think in that instance you're still allowed to change your mind instead of being stuck with a bag that's expensive and unusable or uncomfortable.

But after you've worn it more than a handful of times, it's not cool.

Baring an immediate design flaw (hardware coming off, seams coming unglued, etc.) No, I would never use a bag and then return it, I find that completely tasteless. I just think it's dishonest and frankly used is used, not a hard concept. I once bought a 1600 bag from Sak's and when it came it had clearly been used and returned (crumbs on the inside pocket, etc. talk about disgusting). Had I bought the bag on say feebay described as used that would be fine but receiving it in that condition from a store all because someone felt entitled to carry it and return it knowing it had full well been used just po'd me right off.

Department stores, feebay, heck anywhere you can purchase a bag are not for you to receive it for a few days so you can say you have it, carry it for that one event, take it for a spin only once, all just excuses. Again used is used. Once used it's then returned by the dishonest for the store to only send your used bags out to someone who is actually expecting a new bag and actually plans on keeping it or for the store to have to trash it and absorb the cost all due to the selfishness of some. Ahhh, nothing really surprises me anymore sadly, people rationalize anything as long as it works for them it seems.

I shop very very pickily. Even when I get the item home I try it on with the tags to see if it absolutely positively works. Once they're off, they're off and I'm keeping it. I feel like I gave myself enough time to decide. Whenever I return something it feels like I failed myself, like I didn't think it through.

If it was defective, different story entirely. And I understand the stories about carrying a loaded bag for a couple days before realizing it's too much/too heavy/funny shape.

I bought a leather messenger bag at thrift town and uncovered a king's ransom in kleenex packets, paper clips, a New Yorker magazine, and I think close to $10 in change. I would expect some junk in a used bag at a thrift store, but all that change?!

Never. Dont think I've ever returned a bag period. The only exception I would ever make is if the bag had a manufacturing defect that I found within a reasonable period of time from purchase date.

"still looks brand new"

is relative. you have no idea how many people came at me with a bag that is clearly used..as in still had something of theirs in it, and they still claimed it isn't used! "it must have dropped in there will i was trying it on"

B. S.

what about the piece of hair? the flints......the darkened color?

it was just 'brought' a week ago, and given as a gift two days ago......

excuses that just keep piling on.

having worked in retail i've seen all sorts of tries in returning used goods. once, i was looking at the price tag and lifted it up to read the tag and noticed the plastic loop was loose..because it was pulled out and then the tag taken off and she tried "looping" it back on and it sticks but its not completely in..

i always ask the question, if you were a customer would you buy this? that usually gets the point across on why i can't take it back even though they claim its not used..but some have had the gall to say yes.

for me, i know of other coworkers who didn't mind as long as it looked in a sellable condition but for me its the principle. its not fair to use a bag and then trade it in for another..

i wish there was a way to separate stores for those who like to wear and return and those who don't..so the wear and returns can get someone else's wear and return when exchanging..and those who never do.....never will have to worry about getting someone's used stink.

Once and there was a super good reason.

I fell in love with a Hype bag and bought it. Unfortunately, about 40 days after purchasing it, the handles started to fall apart. I immediately contacted the company and asked if they could replace or repair it as I loved the bag. The response was sadly very dismissive. Another person at the company (Bill Blass/Rampage/Hype) told me to take the bag back to the store and exchange it. I informed them that there were no more bags in the same size and color and was told there was nothing more they could do for me.

I have not and will never purchase another Hype bag or any bag from their parent company.

So, I took the chance and went to the store. The manager was shockingly very understanding and told me that if I spent that much money on a bag, it should hold up. Without any stress, she issued me a full refund but in store credit. I was happy to take it as I honestly thought I'd be stuck with the bag.

I took the store credit (just under $200), added some money to it and bought myself an Andrew Marc bag for $299.

So, yes, I confess that I have returned a bag but it was warranted. I would NEVER return anything I had worn. Its almost like stealing in a way...
