Handbag insurance ?

I actually just had this discussion about a month ago with my agent. Mine are covered under homeowners, but as Bunny pointed out, the important thing is to document. DH and I recently spent a thrilling rainy Saturday taking pics and video of everything in our house and garage, all of which are on a memory stick which is in the safe deposit box at the bank. Our agent said he's always surprised at the number of people who carefully document, and then leave the CD or whatever in the house.

We have mine all covered under our home owners. I had to go thru and catalog everything I have and figure out values... My FIL is our insurance agent and I thought he was going to die when he saw the full value of everything I have!

I have not thought of this for awhile but I am going to check my policy.. I would like to get my bags insured that are expensive and some I can not replace..

My husband works with people who have had home fires. He made me videotape all of my handbags. I laid them all out on the bed and one by one said each one, got close ups of labels, serial # tags, said the price, etc. We put the video record in a fireproof safe.

Horror story: DH said that once, a lady had a fire at her home and her bags were sent to a professional cleaner to get the smoke smell out. Only the cheap bags came back. The nice bags disappeared.

document, document, document!!!!!

Yep, have paid a little extra & have them covered under my home & contents insurance, only had to give a estimated value though the same as DH has extra cover on his home entertainment goods, as they normally only cover certain items upto a certain amount. Better to pay a little more & have them covered!! x

We just call the insurance guy to up the home insurance every time we make an expensive purchase. We don't need a list, we just say the amount we think we need to replace our things if everything gets burned down for instance.

As an Insurance Agent I recommend checking your policy to see that your contents are covered for Replacement cost vs. Actual cash value(the depreciated value,if there is a loss). Big ticket items should always be added to this contents replacement cost and documented to make sure you have enough coverage.
Documenting is always the best for all contents of your home as others have mentioned. Making a DVD (again as others have talked about) for all the contents of your home. If a loss were to happen it is difficult for any homeowner to remember everything they may have aquired over the years, beyond just handbags. I video the inside of cabinets, stuff in the garage, ie bike and sports equipment.
Additionally, some items need to be scheduled, ie musical instruments, jewelry, art, including other catagories of items that are generally over a certain dollar amount per item(this varies by Insurance company)

Sounds like you are all an educated bunch:smile1:

^^My husband lost 2 drum sets in a flood that was covered due to a sewage backup. It was covered under homeowners insurance (no special schedulling needed). But perhaps that was just the company they were with.

Bradysmun your are absolutely right, every company is different. I am glad to hear that his items where covered:D. Sewage Backup coverage with some companies is an Endorsement that you have to add others it is included.

I have clients that I cover with the Philharmonic locally that travel with valuable instruments so scheduling is the safest way for them to have complete coverage for any loss, including mysterious disappearance with my company.

My best advice is read your policies,(yeah! I know how exciting they are) or schedule a review with your agents to find out what coverages you have for your own unique situations.

So I am wondering what everyone does re insuring their handbags? i should look into what the position is with mine and whether I need to do anything in respect of covering them. Are they usually covered as part of general household policies re theft from your home? I suspect i would have to take a seperate policy for them as i do for each of my items of jewelry and my watch? xx
