Mine are covered under my home contents insurance, although if its over a certain price it has to be declared separately and you may pay a bit more on the premium, but its covered at home or outside. Check your policy document for details or check with your provider.

great thread.
I would advise those with documentation to keep originals off site, make a couple of copies; keep one at home, another with a relative, and another in a safe. California with all it's wildfires, earthquakes, floods and crime taught me this lesson. One can never know what catastrophe will befall our collections and surrounding areas.

This is a great thread! Mods -perhaps you would consider making this thread sticky?

I wish I had seen this thread earlier. Wished I had bought insurance on my bag. My beautiful miumiu campaign bag was stolen 2 weeks ago. It was approx USD 2k! I paid for it in FULL retail price using my own hard earned money... one can imagine the pain of losing your precious bag... to think it actually ended up in the arms of a low down despicable thief!

Although getting insurance on our bags may be a troublesome process in terms of documentation, but it's better to be safe than sorry. At least you get some of the value back - to fund for the next bag!

Has anyone been able to insure their bag on its own -- NOT as part of homeowners or renters insurance?

And has anyone ever used this company (below) which i found in another thread?

Im wondering because what if i'm walking down the street and someone knocks me over the head and steals my prada that I couldn't even afford in the first place?!! :)

Thanks!

>>There is an insurance co. called Collectors Insurance Agency (CIA).
They deal only in collectibles - coins, stamps, etc.
I think this would include purses.

http://www.collectinsure.com/

It is usually cheaper to insure through them than to add a rider to your HO policy.
Plus, you save yourself the weird looks from your insurance agent.

Husband has a some collectibles and we use them.

(I am in no way affiliated with this insurance company other than being a customer.
I receive no kickback from referrals either.)

Do any of you have your CL collection/bag collection/whatever on your homeowner's insurance? If so, did it require a special rider?

This week, when my Birkin arrived, I thought it might be a good idea (given it's cost/value) to make sure it was covered by my homeowner's should something happen to it. While talking to the rep. from MetLife, she said that I should put all my bags and shoes on it -- just like many people do with their jewelry. So, I'm gathering receipts and will do that this week.

She also said to take photos of all the items and receipts and put the photos on a "web-based" photo storage, like Facebook, photobucket, etc! That way, should the items, receipts, camera and computer burn up in a fire or something, I've got proof and it makes reimbursement easier. (Although, I'm putting the receipts in a safety deposit box, rather than posting them for everyone to see.)

I thought this was a good idea that was worth sharing!

So, yeah, my friends and family are going to think I'm a whack job for sure when they see a photo album of my shoes and bags go up on Facebook.

If you don't want the pictures to be public (since fakers can steal and use them) you can always put them in a private album on photobucket or Picasa web.

I've never used Picasa, but yeah, I was thinking of just password protecting my "shoe" album on photobucket.

I just thought the web-based solution was a great one for this purpose. And something I wouldn't necessarily think about for that purpose.

sharkbait, i do have a photo album on facebook with my CLs, which can be viewed by my friends only. i think it depends how comfortable you would be with this idea... you can also make your album private which can ONLY be viewed by you.... i for one would not feel comfortable putting up scanned pictures of my receipts.

Yeah, me either, Carlinha, on the receipts. I have my pics on Photobucket now, but no receipts. I'm just going to add my bags and stuff there and get them more organized for insurance purposes, rather than just random shots. And I'll just make the insurance one private. (I'm still new to some Facebook utilities, so I didn't realise you could make them only viewable by you...that's cool.)

But, I just posted this because it might not be something other girls consider, but is a great idea for those "just in case" thoughts.

:)

Are you worried about losing your things to theft, or fire, or????

In a fire situation everything should be covered assuming your policy is for fire. Theft may be extra to get it covered and while jewelry generally maintains or increases it's value the majority of handbags do not. If you have a blanket policy that covers your bags for a fire or water damage you'll only receive pennies on the dollar for them in most cases although holding onto receipts will help with the ins. co. a bit.

This is a bit off topic but my sister recently got an Iphone and told me that you could insure it with State Farm since ATT doesn't provide insurance. She did which was a great move since she damaged her phone and SF sent her a check to get a new one.

Then it made me think... Has anyone here insured their purse? I only have one Coach bag. I worked very hard for it (i'm poor)... I should insure it so if someone steals or damages it i could get myself another...

Any thoughts? Thanks for reading ;)
