Handbag Deal breakers Thread

In short - Monograms or any bag where the print on the leather/fabric on the outside seems more important/obvious than the design KWIM.

1. I agree. I don't like bags with logo prints (especially fabric), so all of these are deal breakers:

That said, I like LV Damier, but it's not really logo, right?

2. Contrast stitching. I just think it makes bags look cheap.

3. Suede. I think it gets dirty too easily and doesn't look good no matter how hard you try to clean it. Even if it's just on some parts of the bag.

Everything else is negotiable.

LOL...just love your visual for your reason #1:

"1. I agree. I don't like bags with logo prints (especially fabric), so all of these are deal breakers:

Here's my list:

a) I too abhor (yes, a very strong word, but in this case, appropriately stated!) logo prints and LARGE Nameplates that advertise the manufacturer (PRADA, JIMMY CHOO, FENDI to name a few).

b) a purse that is so popular that there are knock-offs (Coach, Prada, JC, Fendi, Gucci, LV, etc).

c) heavy heavy bags (ex. Chloe Paddington)

d) bags that are hard to get in/out of.....example would be the Botkier Bianca...there's a zipper, than a strap and then a push clip for the strap.....it's like getting into Fort Knox!

e) inexpensive hardware, inexpensive leather/fabric, etc. I know this one is subjective.

I think that's about it.
Great thread!

For me it's the following:

1. Contrast stitching, again
2. Chain handles or straps with metal rivets/rings/hardware...my hair gets stuck in them and gets pulled and it makes me cranky. so I avoid them now, although I actually do like the look of them.
3. Bags that make noise when I walk. Returned a MK bag because it made a squeaking sound when I carried it on my shoulder.
4. And although I love the looks of so many of them, I get annoyed with bags that are shapeless when empty and just fall to the ground in a puddle of flabby leather. The Anna Corinna Knotty Nellie bag is an example of this, I bought it as a travel bag but it had absolutely no structure to it, which ended up being a deal breaker for me.
5. Bags that require more than one step to open, like they have a zipper and then a flap that goes over the zipper that fastens with a turnlock, snap, magnet, or button.

ha, well I guess that's it.

My deal breakers are:
1. Satchel bags (I need a shoulder strap after a year of trying to lug a satchel, coffee, etc. around the city).
2. LV monogram bags.
3. Bags with small flaps over the main compartment. I don't want to have to un-do a flap and a zipper to get to my phone.
4. Heavy hardware... Chloe and some Balenciaga bags.
5. Beading.

5. Bags that require more than one step to open, like they have a zipper and then a flap that goes over the zipper that fastens with a turnlock, snap, magnet, or button.
Oh Yes! I forgot about this most important item! My hubby gave me a Cynthia Rowley Lenore for Christmas last year and I wore it as much as I could stand it because of this very same issue.....a bunch of steps to go through just to get into the bag. I still have it, and I won't part with it, but I only wear it once in a while just to let him know that I love what he gave me.

I kind of look at a bag and if something about it makes me love it, I'm willing to put up with a lot. It can be heavy, have double handles, etc.

A few things I never like though:
- Expensive bags made out of vinyl or nylon
- Bags that look "cheap" (I know that's subjective...)
- Patchwork bags
- Too many charms or other hanging things. (JC comes to mind)
- Huge rectangular bags

Unfortunately for my pocketbook, I tend to like more than I dislike!

I totally dislike

a. silver hardware - I only wear gold
b. shoulder straps / long handles - I use only totes
c. anything furry or animal print - looks cheap
d. rhinestones, charms, sequins etc. - not my style

Deal breakers for me:

Poor quality leather
Poor stitching (crooked stitches, bulging stitches, just bad stitching in general)
Plastic zippers (inside or out)
Cheap lining (the bag should look as nice on the inside as the outside)
White stitching (I have a Donna Karan bag that is black with tan stitching and that looks nice, but bright, white stitching on a dark color looks cheap)
Cheapo hardware

These are so interesting! For me:

-Black leather bags with silvertone hardware. No matter how elegant they are, this combo always makes me think of motorcycle clothing. I have no background or knowledge of motorcycle gangs, so I have no idea why I have this association. I love Ferragamo black bags, but won't buy one for this reason. I've noticed a few new models with gold.... here's hoping they add more soon.

-I think LV logo canvas is classic, but don't own any. I own 2 Gucci logo bags which I love, but I can safely say I probably won't buy anymore logo bags. When the logos form a distinct pattern, I think they can be beautiful. However, these days I'm just not shopping for anything with logos.

-Patent bags-way too much.... a clutch maybe.

-Chain straps....ouch!

-Quilting... pretty, but not me.

I'm sure there's more...this is all I can think of right now.

I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet!

Double handled straps!!!!
You put them over the shoulder and one always flops down. So annoying!
SUCH a dealbreaker.

that is so ironic b/c i actually love double straps, almost all my bags (save for clutches, small pochettes) have double straps. i just like the way it looks better. i'm really not into the hobo look... oh well i guess it really is true, to each her own!

I totally understandd the double strap slippage problem. A couple of years ago, an SA told me that if a bag has double straps you should always push it behind your arm (like the models show them) because they sit better. It took me a while to get used to doing that but it works.

Asymmetry's what I can't deal with, for instance:

My dealbreakers:

1- Made in China. I've lusted after a bag, and then placed it back on the shelf when I saw that my expensive bag was made in China. I did compromise when I obsessed over tokidokis.
2- plastic-feeling leather. YUCK.
3- straps/handles on bags have to be just perfect, and perfect really depends on the kind of bag
4- bags that are heavy when empty
5- monograms plastered all over the bag
6- no zippers to close off the main compartment of the bag
7- white bags, but beige and off-white are fine
8- poorly made bags from anywhere in the world
9- satchels/bowlers w/o metal feet
10- ridiculously huge bags that I can stuff myself in

I have more, but I don't want to seem picky. :P
