Hi sorry this is a late question, but I just got a bag from the outlet and my tag looks the same. I asked the sales ppl if they sold any "made for outlet bags" and they said I, everything is retail. I got a canvas Bree hobo bag with leather details. She said it was $1100 but I only paid $599. Its an older style? Maybe from several years ago? She wasn't the only one to tell me they don't make "outlet bags" and everything is retail. Can you tell me how you know this specifically about the tag? I'm really interested! Thank you!!!
I'm assuming you mean that your tag has the G stamp with the circle around it? The SA is technically correct, in that all of the bags are made to be retailed or sold, to use another term. However, it's been my experience that many SAs will not admit to knowing the difference between a bag from a past season that was sold at full-line Gucci stores, as opposed to ones that are only sold through the outlets, with outlet-specific designs. They don't want to share the distinction, but there are small differences, usually in the amount of detailing in the design. There is also another distinction, which are bag designs from a previous creative director that were originally sold in full-line stores, but are only sold through outlet now (because they're popular, but don't reflect the current creative direction of the brand). The Lady Web is a good example of this. The made for outlet bags are a usually a little simpler in design, so the prices tend to be a little lower than full-line bags at outlet. However, if you love it, I wouldn't worry about the "made for outlet" stamp! I consider the quality of the bags the same. At the end of the day, it's still a Gucci bag, made by Gucci, and sold by Gucci. If you love it, that's all that matters! Hope that helps, and wasn't too confusing.

I first became aware of the difference, because it was pointed out to me by my regular Gucci SA, when a customer tried to return an outlet-only bag at the regular store (I was in the store when it happened, and asked my SA). It's been confirmed by both my SAs and the store managers at a couple of Gucci outlets, although they all said it's not something they're supposed to talk about. You can always check the tag for yourself, now that you know, but once you shop regularly at outlet, the outlet-only designs are pretty easy to spot. If you're doing a phone sale/send, you can always ask for a picture of the leather tag front and back (I've seen the stamp in both places).
So to recap:
1) Bags that have the G stamp with a circle, simpler designs that are made to be sold though Gucci outlets only
2) Bags that have no G stamp with circle, popular full-line designs (older designs that used to be sold in regular Gucci stores, such as the Lady Web) from a previous creative director that are still produced years later, but sold through Gucci outlet only
3) Bags that have no G stamp with circle, that are past season full-line designs (sold in regular Gucci stores) from the current creative director, moved from regular Gucci stores/dept. stores to be sold through Gucci outlet....usually about 6-10 months after it's seen in stores. The timeline can be longer, or not make it to outlet at all, if a design is very popular.

Excellent explanation, Stylistbydesign. I wasn't aware of your Point #2 so I learned something.
I too have spoken directly to an SA from a Gucci outlet abt made-for-outlet bags. The only thing I can add is the SA stressed that these bags are made with the same materials as boutique bags. Gucci may use end-of-roll material or left overs but it is all boutique quality materials ~ just simplier, less detailed designs.
As a consumer, I highly appreciate that Gucci identities their MFOutlet items. I really wish other brands did as well. Esp. when I'm perusing pre-loved, eBay, and other online markets.

Ok got it, I can understand continuing to make a bag based off an older popular design. I liked the one I got because it looked classic. I have bought other Gucci from Saks years ago, but this is my first time getting a bag from the outlet.

So when I used google to search images with "Bree Original GG Canvas Hobo Bag" a picture from Neiman Marcus comes up with my bag, but obviously it says "sold out." The only difference I saw between my bag and this once full price bag, is mine has more leather! Weird considering the outlet bags would be simpler designs! But I'm really happy they still make the classics because I can't get into every creative director's art project! Lol. Here are some pics to point out what I mean.

From the Neiman Marcus website, reference the site address in the pic:

The leather continues up the whole way on my bag as opposed to the full price Neiman Marcus bag, where it stops and just goes to canvas. But I'm so happy I understand all of this now! I can get why retail won't make as many of the classic GG canvas bags, but nice to know they're still being produced!

I will say upon closer inspection, the Neiman's bag has reversed white stitching and the outlet bag does not.

I just noticed that too. Outlet bag's topstitching is tonal rather than contrasting. Still, I think your bag is gorgeous. Do you know if the fabric is Supreme Canvas or whatever the canvas was called b4 Supreme? It's my understanding the Supreme lasts longer.

Someone posted photos in the out the door thread of all the different ways she wears hers. I would look through there but I found this one too. I’m receiving a red one for my friend today so I can try and take a photo later too. I’m in love with this bag
Gosh, I wish this bag didn't have a chain strap. Wonder if a leather strap could be swapped out? But then the issue would be matching colors - dye lot and all.

No I don't think it's Supreme canvas...that's coated canvas? I'm not sure, I'm actually an LV customer and this is my first Gucci purchase since 2004!

I'm kind of annoyed because I think they really lied to me. I used to work for a Burberry outlet and we never had this kind of thing. Every single item was in a retail store, period.

I guess I only felt comfortable buying outlet if I knew it came from a retail store...the way I see my bag now is Gucci made its own replica!

IMG_9935.jpgIMG_9938.jpg

I can tell from the pictures it doesn't look like the same leather, either...
I think the associates should be more honest but I can see if their superiors are making them keep quiet about it. It's kind of leaving a bad taste in my mouth...?

Pretty darn near a replica!
I can't see detail well enough on my phone to compare the leathers. But I would be upset if an outlet SA had informed me that outlet bags were assembled using the same materials as boutique bags (which I was) and then later learned that was a lie.

If I were you and had the availability, I'd ck out a boutique Gucci bag instore. At the least, I'd contact another outlet or a boutique or Gucci direct. Just for peace of mind.

p.s. I don't care what my superiors instructed, I wouldn't lie.

Look at the difference at just the tag alone...you can see it's totally a different leather!

Well, the color looks different for sure. I notice the outlet bag's zipper is not metal, and has single rather than dbl stitching.

I wish one of the authenticators or OG members could chime in.
Paper tiger? GhstDreamer? Snibor? Sinny1?

Guess I finally figured out how to use hperlink. Rather feels like I'm using an incantation to "call" their attention. Hope doing this is ok??

I guess I would ask if you really love the bag at that price point.....if you do, then keep it! If not, you have 14 days to exchange at a Gucci outlet. Was there something you liked better? I actually like the way the leather comes up the sides on yours. That's not the Supreme canvas (you're right...it's coated); it's a jacquard fabric, like on vintage Gucci bags, which I think is cool. If you do keep the bag, then I would spray a protectant like Collonil on it to help with dirt, color transfer, rainy weather (test a spot first!). You may find something you like better at a higher price point, but do you want to spend more? Good luck deciding!

I decided to return it, and they let me for a full refund because they admitted their sales associates lied on both occasions that I asked if it was a made for outlet bag. After seeing so many differences between the retail and outlet version, i felt like this wasn't any better than a replica! And I'm totally against replicas. I learned my lesson. It was my first outlet purchase, but if I buy again, I will make absolutely sure it came from retail. Thank God for TPF!!! Btw, I bought a Burberry bag from Nordstrom instead and I feel much more comfortable with this purchase![emoji1303]

I think you did the right thing bc it sounds like that bag would bug you every time you laid eyes on it.

I'm glad they gave you a refund; it's not their policy, but the mgrs. have leeway if the customer is unhappy. Sounds like you bought a bag you love, so it's a happy ending!
